Still they have to buy a DVD disc and burn the game onto it. That takes time you know. Also if they do want to play Online MS can track them.

PS3_3DO
Professional crack rings would have burn farms and buy their DVD+/-R DL's in bulk. And we're talking places where online may be limited, like the Philippines (I mean it--in some places electricity is hard to come by, let alone telephones and other amenities).

[QUOTE="Velocitas8"]Also, try finding quotes from dev team members that actually matter. Hollenshead is a CEO. Mike Capps is the President of Epic Games. NEITHER of them actually work on games.Forza_2
Please tell me that is a joke...

No joke. We're looking for words from people like Tim Sweeney and Cliffy B--actual coders who know the games and engines from stem to stern and can thus speak from a position of expertise.

[QUOTE="Velocitas8"]Okay..why the hell are they allowing people to play online with stolen copies of the game? I don't have CoD4 and I don't want it, but it would seem to me there'd be some sort of CD-key authentication tied to online play.Velocitas8

With PCs theres always a way.

No. You can't play online in recent PC games with an invalid CD key. Period. I'd be surprised if CoD4 was an exception to this.

You might be able to play on a LAN game with an invalid CD key, but joining online servers viewable in the server browser requires CD-key validation before a connection can be established.

Someone might be able to circumvent validation and join games for a couple minuites at a time (they'd be kicked during mid-game checks,) but that's a good way to get your IP address/range banned. Something like that isn't possible in games that require creation of an account for online play, either (Battle.net, Steam, and pretty much any EA game.)

Uh you play on private servers that allow cracked games obviously. You can do this with any game. Even WOW.

They Wonder Why People Don't Make PC Games Any More

We pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn't fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online).

Not sure if I can share the exact numbers or percentage of PC players with you, but I'll check and see; if I can I'll update with them. As the amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding. It blows me away at the amount of people willing to steal games (or anything) simply because it's not physical or it's on the safety of the internet to do.

What? You can't play fps's online without a valid cd key. The most people can do is play the game offline. You can not play online without purchasing the game. Period.

Yeah, they echoed this in the 1up yours podcast when John mentioned talking to one of the Crysis devs. Apparently it only sold around 80,000 copies or something stupidly low like that.

Its a tragedy when gamers kill their own system.

nicenator

Alright here we go genius. First your wrong, if you knew why they sold much you'd probably be thinking otherwise. Crysis sold bad, because a) it is such a system hog that nobody can play it maxed @ 1280x1024 without aa/af ona super computer, nevermind your home pc. b) nobody in this day an age can go hey I'll pick this game up and play it maybe medium high, nu uh....they should've made the game, but that is somewhat reachable for everyone. I'm just saying...

PC FC sold over million copies, which is twice as much as FCI sold. Why do you think FC2 is developed as PC game and consoles only get ports (which is complete reverse of what Ubi is doing with their other shooting IPs)

So, let me get this straight, PC gamers don't "support developers financially", and yet Vandalvideo, a dedicated PC gamer, has put in hundreds of hours (and dollars) into *just one game alone*, and you insult him for it? What the hell is the argument here?

-

Really all we have here is senseless PC bashing, it's the same "I hate PC" attitude, the same ignorance, just a new veil. Enough.

Subrosian, since I agree with almost if not all of your posts, once again I've gotta agree, that even though this is System Wars, but going so low as to take a "low-blow" is really pathetic. Saying a person clocking in those hours, in a PC Piracy thread is totally the opposite. I don't get the meaning behind it. After 11/29, the forums intelligence has dropped severely... you know who you are.

This is why every major PC game from now on will be on 360 or PS3. Hermits, not saying you, but a hell of alot of your kind do not purchase games but instead chose to get them for free. You are basically killing your platform.

As long as a game has a LAN mode (and most will--it's essential for closed-loop LAN parties and tournament settings), then you can get around online authentication. You just need an IP tunnel and the location of a black server.
