Sadly, those not in the know are just very narrow minded about the subject. All they see is popular music. Which makes little sense because if we looked at popuar rock, that genre would suck, too.

H0RSE

...all they see is popular music...Dream Theater, Stratovarius, Opeth, Iced Earth....those are some of the top bands I listen to...good luck finding them on any top 40, on any TV station, you might find some of it at a CD store, and theres a good chance that many of the people that posted in this thread have never heard of them....I only like popular music...no, I only like GOOD music.

I meant only knowing popular rap. Maybe I should have been more clear. I am assuming from your comments that you do not know any of the rappers that have deeper lyrical content than "rims and bling" of the stuff on the radio. I am a big music fan, probaly have more cd's than most people here. Probably close to half of it is rap. Yet NONE of it deals with topics such as "bling". I HATE the rap that the masses listen to today. But I know that is just one part of rap.

I too lilsten to GOOD music, from just about all genres.

All I got from reading TC's post is that he hates rap and console gaming. This is stupid. dark-warmachine

And all i got from your post was you hate PC gaming, he never once said console gaming was bad. I think its a fair analogy and its just your fanboyish mind ignoring the facts that makes you think its stupid. In-fact all your doing is further proving what TC has said, nice job....

no. rap sukx and console don't therefore rap=/= consoles. oh and PC=Cher

of course this comes down to musical and gaming tastes

RacoonusDoodus

Lol it has nothing to do with musical taste, hes not directly comparing music to gaming platforms because that wouldn't make sense, hes comparing there fanbase and innovation, not how it sounds. You not liking rap and liking consoles doesn't make what hes saying wrong.

What about this? The Wii is just like rap, it shoves crap into the masses and those sell, while new games that are critically acclaimed doesn't, just like why guys like Soulja Boy is selling, but guys like Lupe and Chamillionaire (especially recently) isn't. However, the first party franchises represent the legends like Jay-Z, Nas, and Eminem. They'll sell, but some will criticize it for being irrelevent.

Gh0st_Of_0nyx

I don't watch TV, or listen to the radio. I don't even know what "soulj boy" is. It's not that I'm a biased rocker....i would say it's more that I'm musician. I've been playing drums for over 15 years, and I play music with other musicians. I know what it's like to play a live show and to practice and write songs. I understand rudiments and chords and time signatures. I've seen and played with tons of musicians. Some good, some not so good...but I can relate to them all as musicians.....To see some guy rhyming words together to a beat that loops..or to see people "battle" each other..music is an artform. You should appreciate it and admire it...not turn it into some competitive sport....It kinda kills the whole "music" aspect of it, regardless of how deep or sincere the lyrics are. Some of the best songs I've ever heard are instrumentals. Think of it this way...take 10 people who listen to rap, and take 10 people who listen to rock....which ones are more likely to play an instrument...Maybe the fans of rap and hip hop are so keen on the lyrics, because without them...there's really nothing else to offer. I actually have friends that are all about rap and hip hop, and always bust on me for my music. But whenever I goto a concert, they want to come because, and these are their words, "Rap shows are boring."

Yes. Consoles games are exactly like rap.

It gets hated on because elitist think they know everything when they know absolutely nothing.

But since we're discussing music, can you explain to me what makes rock real music and rap not?

PS: I don't listen to rap.

PRKiNG45

^Best post on the first page, and probably the entire thread.

Everyone thinks rap is what you hear on the radio and see on TV, trust me, theres good Hip Hop but its all underground, mainstream hip hop has sucked for the last 5 years or so on all levels.

I dont listen to rock but i dont bash it blindly, because i know theres good rock and bad rock just like hip hop (although i do listen to whatever is on Tarantino soundtracks, and movie/game soundtracks/score's in general).

This is the stupidest thread ever. Most rap sucks, but the majority of rock sucks as well. Also, I listen to all types of music including old hip hop, and Rakim is the greatest man in music in the last century.

I have noticed that when comparing PC and console games, it's a lot like comparing music. PC games would be rock music and console games would be rap.

Console games are like rap...First off, the fan base. Rap attracts a younger crowd...consoles attract a younger crowd. Rap songs come off as big and flashy and the "cool" thing, but really they fail to offer any real depth or innovation....just like console games. Speaking of innovation, You console fanboys might think Halo is the best thing since sliced bread, but here is some trivia for you:

The first Halo game was announced on July 21, 1999 during the Macworld Conference & Expo. It was originally planned to be a RTS game for the Mac and Windows, but later changed into a third person action game. On June 19, 2000 Microsoft acquired Bungie Studios and Halo became an Xbox exclusive title...So your "big hit", one of the biggest selling game in console game history....is a PC game at birth.

Which brings me to my next comparison.Console games, like rap, tend to take a lot of their content from already existing ideas. This would be in the form of game ports and sampling/covering songs. How many great rock songs have been ruined by crappy rap artists covering, or sampling them....and how many great PC games were made a mockery of being ported to console. In all fairness though, this is more of an old-school trait for console games, and not so much now. Back in the day, consoles received a lot of PC ports because the PC had already been out for some time and had time to establish a line of "hit" games. So they figured, if it worked on the PC, why not on console? As we realized through the years, some games are just meant to be played on PC. Today, games are typicallyreleased on bo th platforms quite often from the start...Rap on the other-hand, continues to butcher Rock songs rather than actually think of original beats and ideas.

New rap songs tends to be cool for a couple weeks, and then die. And when they die, they do not fade away gracefully, they crash and burn. you might as well bury it in a lead box, cover it with cement, and build a skyscraper on top of it. How many times have you seen someone on the road bumpin "the Fat Boys" or "Fresh Prince." It's not cool to play old rap, and it's not cool to play old console games....I've actually seen people look online, and make fun of people if they were playing an older game. In fact, if you want to play an older console game online...good like finding people on the servers. Whereas on the PC, like rock music, old is perfectly fine. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Neil Young, all are just as popular now as they were when they were new. And you will still find people playing games like Doom, UT, Starcraft, and D2 online....And the PC attracts an older, more mature crowd, so they won't make fun of you if you choose to play the older titles.

If you have any comments to say...well, thats what forums are for.

H0RSE

wow i only read the first paragraph but that is a horrible analagy

if you are going to use somthing to compare them use somthing that is absolute not opinion based because everyone has different views on music genres

all games borrow from existing ideas on all platfroms especially PC as it has been out longer therefore consistently ripping ideas longer and the wii clearly taking a new approach which leads to alot of new gameplay of which the PC does not have.

wii does equal soulja boy. I hate his music but its fun to dance to when every1 else is doing it. Hate the wii but its fun when everyone else is playing it. OMG, wii and soulja boy have so much in common.

soulja boy= Kiddy, main target is children and family oriented.

wii= kiddy, main target is children and family oriented.

Soulja boy = grown poeple enjoy his music(its in the clubs/parties)

wii= grown poeple enjoy it

Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Neil Young, all are just as popular now as they were when they were new.

No.

I don't know what is more pretentious. The way you generalize the fanbase and traits of hip-hop or the way you generalize the fanbase and qualities of console gaming. Either way, I disagree :|

*LOL* Oh, sure rock is the only genre that's entirely original. They didn't "borrow" from older songs from other genres, either. I bet you thought that Elvis was the first one to sing Hound Dog, when it was in fact a blues song originally recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thorton. That's a considered a classic, too. She also happened to have been the original singer of Ball 'n' Chain which Janis Joplin made a version of. Oh, yeah, rock never derived anything at all.

If the TC could have somehow integrated people's religious and political views into this thread as well, it'd be the funniest thing ever.

A lot of the analogies were very poor too; while I see some of the shallow connections you made between PC gaming and rock music, one could easily draw parallels between PC and rap (ie, more commercially successful than the alternative).

Twist and Shout, made popular by the Beatles, was originally recorded by the Isley Brothers.

The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Who, ALL have their roots in blues music..Look at Eric Clapton, considered (and is btw) to be one of the greatest guitarist ever, heavily influenced by blues...This is true about most of the"British invasion" rock groups..The British Invasion era = The greatest era in Rock.,It's like the 16 bit era of videogames.

Although I hold rockers in a higher esteem than I do wannabe gangstas, I wouldn't exactly label them as being mature. And besides, there's plenty of young kids who listen to the newer wannabe rock stars, who's songs fade away after their airplay on the radio is over and done. Find a better comparison.

I stopped right there. I already see you have not a clue what your talking about, becuase if you did then you would know most of the best rappers are underground...not mainstream. I suggest you listen to Kanye West,Styles P.,D-Block,Papoose,Ludacris,Common,Jay-Z,A Tribe Called Quest,Andre 3000,The Game,Eminem,Tupac,LOX,Jadakiss,Bone Thugs N Harmony,Nas,Public Enemy...must I continue? T_T I can also say rock has no depth because these days many are just emo bands expressing their hate for the world, but that's not exactly true now is it?

Not all rappers are wannabe gangst, nor are all of the people who listen to it.I'm not a big fan of rap, in fact, I rarely listen to it, but I'm really annoyed that the first image people tend to throw out there about rap is it's gangsta variant.

There are is huge variety of rap out there. And Gangsta rap isn't even the most popular ****anymore.

Is rap as good as it used to be? Hell no. But is some rap still good? Hell yes. I mean seriously I know some of you guys are old enough to party, go out to clubs, ect. What kind of music do you think they play most of the time?

When you go to a College Party or Bar what kind of music are they usually playing?

Face it without Rap your Party life would be virtually non-existant and that's pretty much fact (at least in the states) Its just uniformly accepted music when it comes to going. I mean you're going to have to find some selective parties, clubs, ect that aren't going to play rap music.

...umm, I don't goto clubs. I don't dance, I don't smoke, drink, do any drugs (even my mouthwash is alcohol free) and I don't have promiscuous sex..so rap plays no part in my "party" life. My party life is playing shows, jamming out and hanging out with my friends, and playing PC games. And when I've gone to College parties...rap is not on the menu. So your statement is about as factual as saying Unicorns exist, and the Dinosaurs were around during the Carter Administrations.

Seriously, what a retarded analogy. I happen to be a 31 year old console only gamer, and I cannot stand rap music. I only listen to classic and hard rock, heavy metal and blues. So, there goes your little theory straight out the window.

You actually think that you can just create some off the wall analogy based off of your own personal preferences and then pigeon hole everyone else based on what you perceive to be the logic thereof? I swear, only in System Wars.

H0RSE

for a 31 yr old, you are a complete moron. I never said that console gamers only listen to rap and PC gamers only listen to rock. It was a comparative statement. I was using music and games to point out similarities between rock and PC games, and rap and console games. Even the fan-base is is similar.

Perhaps you should be reading more books or maybe take some college classes Mr. "31 year old console only game."

I never indicated that you meant it literally, as I said that it was a retarded ANALOGY. So, pardon me for taking your horrible analogy at face value for being the awful, stereotypical comparison that it was.

As for your suggestion that I "take more college classes". Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I have already been there and done that. Considering your formation of slanted, baseless analogies and how you freely throw around insults at complete strangers, I would be suprised if you even went to college.

Good day.

And you will still find people playing games like Doom, UT, Starcraft, and D2 online....

That's not true. I been picked on for playing Half life 1 deathmatch adn the first time I went on battle.ne ton Diablo 1 there was a huge agurment going on about D1 vs D2.

And the PC attracts an older, more mature crowd, so they won't make fun of you if you choose to play the older titles.

But you will be made fun off if you don't play the 'greater' games. Starcraft fans spam and troll other RTS boards, Everquest and World of Warcraft fanboys are always going at it with each other and with other MMORPGs. And not to metion PC gamers comes up with threads like this, you made a huges generalization that all RAP is for kids who want to be gangsters not all rap is bad.

rap is pointless garbage. wank*rs blaberring on about how they are such 'OUTLAWZ' or bADsaases with no ryhthm or melody what so ever. Its like a swearing competition in which who could do it in the quickest amount of time wins.

You really shouldn't comment on things unless you actually have knowledge about them.

H0RSE

...umm, I don't goto clubs.

Because you have to drink, smoke, do drugs, and have sex at parties?

I'm sorry but this post of yours I find sterotypical, derogatory, and to be honest just down right hateful.

If you don't want to go to clubs fine. If you don't dance well that's fine too. Nothing wrong with that. But tons of girls go to clubs and tons of girls like to dance.

Now my issue with your post is this. When did going to clubs to party and dance automatically lead to or involve smoking, drinking, drugs, and sex? Stop stereotyping and stop being a hter seriously.

You've gone to college parties without rap on the menu. Yeah thats fine did I say that rap existed at 100% of parties no I did not. I said most.

If playing PC games at a party then that's fine too. But what you said above is just ignorant. Hell its not really anything different then what Vulcan101 said to Jacboy.

I swear I wonder where this horrible rap stereo type comes from sometimes. Most of the hate comes from people who have virtually no knowledge of it in the first place.

And what's even funnier too is that this has been a repeat offense by tons of gamers here on these boards, the same gamers the whine and complain about Jack Thompson claiming video gamers are murderers
