Console games are like rap...First off, the fan base. Rap attracts a younger crowd...consoles attract a younger crowd.

H0RSE

I didn't know the younger crowd was into night clubs, college parties, ect. Hell how is this young crowd supposed to get in when its 21 and up due to alcohol?

H0RSE

...wow..have u ever heard of Classic Rock? I'm sure all they are doing is screaming. How about 80's rock?..yep, definitley more screaming...so much so, that rap artists always sample there stuff.

This is hilarious. The hypocricy is amazing. Its funny how you can stereotype rap music but when someone stereo types Rock you defend it. Yet when people defend rap you dismiss it.

This is the stupidest thread ever. Most rap sucks, but the majority of rock sucks as well. Also, I listen to all types of music including old hip hop, and Rakim is the greatest man in music in the last century.iLiveBy2words
No sorry Michael Jackson is the greatest thing to happen to modern music. There are very few that have influenced the music industry as much as he has.

This proves what I've been thinking all along: the internet community is either full of A) Wannabe cool teenagers who think listening to Metallica is hard, or B) Otakus who are ruthless fans of their own useless MIDI compositions. Souljah Boy does not constitute the entire rap game. Blu & Haze, Panacea, Nas, Scarface bring some meaning into hip hop. Panacea has a song called "Pops said", dedicated to fathers. That **** is deep. When's the last time grindcore did something actually productive in their genre? "Cold was my soul, untold was the pain" -- yeah, I know you guys totally can totally relate to 'Nymphetamine' with all the experience of being rejected by your first crush

On the surface, all popular music ha no depth. Rap to me, has zero depth. It is a big time elitest thing to say that, but I feel the same way. All it does, to me is influence really stupid social behaviors.New-Gamer

Don't video games do the same exact thing?

Not only that, but how can someone say rap induces bad social behaviour when there's a group of unhygenic, long-haired, anti-social group running around? No joke. You talk about the rap audience like they're being influenced negatively when this other crowd enjoys the myth that Marilyn Manson throws kittens into the audience to be squashed in the mosh pit? How does Cannibal Corpse postively reinforce society? Honestly, some people need a wake up call. Edit: I wasn't talking at you, B^2.

Why stop there Frozenliquid. Lets add more senseless stereotype to it lol. Guys that like rap can dress. I mean you gotta stay looking fresh with clean shoes new clothes ect. Guys that like Rock? Man they look like they haven't gotten a cut or taken a shower in weeks not to mention wearing the same clothes days on end.

I mean its not that hard to make ignorant statements lol.

Rap is like poetry.. It's people speaking from their heart about their current living situation, Stories, and or world events. H0RSE

umm...isn't that pretty much all music.

If you speak about rap (as a whole..) being about "flash" than you know nothing of the art. And the fact that you define Fresh Prince as "good" old school rap already sums up your knowlege of the genre. OhSnapitz

It is about flash. The Mansions, the women, the cars, the 24" no excuse me... 26" rims. It's all about flash. They even talk about it their "songs." Perhaps at one time it was an "art" but now it is nothing more than a get rich quick scheme for record companies. And you saying it's an "art".....what does that make all the other genres of music? and I also never said Fresh Prince was good oldschool...i just said it was oldschool. Even if I mentioned any of the artists you dubbed as "good" oldschool, do ever hear people listening to them, or playing them on the radio? Maybe a couple times occasionally, and they aren't even that old. Compared to artists like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or The Who who are all over the radio. They were around when your "good" oldschool artists weren't even a wet dream yet....and they are 10 times more popular. They have to be somewhat popular since hip hop artists continue to cover and sample them.

sorry to get side tracked on this whole rap vs rock bull****, but do urself a favor and re read this intelligent responce to ur pointless rant

Rap is like poetry.. It's people speaking from their heart about their current living situation, Stories, and or world events. If you speak about rap (as a whole..) being about "flash" than you know nothing of the art. And the fact that you define Fresh Prince as "good" old school rap already sums up your knowlege of the genre. KRS 1 is old school, Leaders of the New is old school, Tribe called Quest is Old school, De La Soul is old school, LL Cool J is old school.. And you speak about current rap.. Have you listened to Lupe Fiasco? Common? Do you even know who they are?

just the meer fact that u only took a fraction of his responce shows that (like he said) have no clue what ur talking about when it comes to rap music. all u do is nit pick off of the sterotype, the perfect ignorant american, applaud u.

now lets get back on topic, games. u stated, "its not cool to play old console games." oh. my. god. was that stupid. tell me, did u even bother to think whaen u typed that? have u ever heard of the VC? and come on, ur a hermit. dont tell me u havent heard of emulaters. i can go on and on about how badly ur argument fails, but ill save my time and energy, think of u as a fake boy, and move on.

The common misconception is that rap/hip hop takes no skill at all, possibly because modern hip-hop does not use live instruments, but samples. Unlike rock and all its hardcore subgenres, hip hop is more about lyrics, flow and execution. Yes, I am going over the edge to say that rock is primarily about the riffs, solos, and double kicks, with message coming secondary. Why do I think this? Because I write rock lyrics. With my first love being music, and everywhere around me people loving metal and old school rock, which also includes my brother and most of my male friends in their own bands, it was inevitable that I should write lyrics to their sheet music (for the record I hate tab, guitarists. It's so simple and such a stupid shortcut it's only going to hamper you in the long run). I can tell you right now it's actually quite simple to write metaphorical lyrics for hard rock to grindcore. I honestly just write some BS with macabre imagery and those guys are satisfied with it being as good as 8 Foot Sativa or Avenged Sevenfold. Rap lyrics, however, I find hard. Not only is the vocab used generally more varied than rock, you have to take into account the accent in particular inflection, tone, output etc from the beginning. It is viable to create a good rap song with lyrics first, beat second. It's not really advisable for rock songs. That's my take on it anyway.

If the wannabe bling bling audience makes fun of rock, I'll go defend rock, but yeah I knew this was bound to happen on the internet because for some reason the "intarweb" brings all the metal heads. Sometimes I feel sorry for the mainstream hip hop audience though coz they get a lot of slack for their tastes in music for nothing. I remember my mates were making fun of hip hop in class, and one guy just turned around and said to them "Hey, I've always wondered what's the problem. Why is it that we who like rap and hip hop accept rock music for what it is, but you guys always have to hate on our music". That shut my friends up for the rest of the entire lesson.

Most people that like Rap don't really tend to go out of their way to put down other forms of music. The same cannot be said for the inverse though.

So many people hate on rap like it makes them some sort of superior human or something. Its disgusting.

The problem with that analogy is the fact that Rap as a whole has been sucking hard for the past few years and console gaming clearly has not. I don't mean to say I don't like Rap it's just that the only thing I've liked lately is Kanye West in the genre and there's something wrong with only enjoying one artist IMHO.

I'll go so far as to say that I am not the biggest rap fan, but the whole it takes not talent to write is pretty narrowminded. All the common misconceptions about rap can be applied to rock ... Led Zeppelin were not the best song writers, nothing but a bunch of drug addicts writing about hippy hallucinations, extramarital sex, partying, and the like. I still love em for being an awesome band.No flash in rock? that's all a guitar solo is really, a wanker going off like he is god's gift to the world. I still like them. I guess my point is that before you insult something, make sure you yourself don't look foolish...

Western classical? Oriental classical? Polynesian classical? I like all the old stuff, including the legendary pieces. Today's "classical" is nice to listen to as well, though a lot of it is rather forgettable.

There various types of rap and rock, and sometimes even a combined nature of both elements.People generalize each music genre to something specific, which is not true.

Yes. Consoles games are exactly like rap.

It gets hated on because elitist think they know everything when they know absolutely nothing.

But since we're discussing music, can you explain to me what makes rock real music and rap not?

PS: I don't listen to rap.

OhSnapitz

Rock has actual melodies and harmonies... oh and actual SINGING! Rap is only rhythm, and sometimes they mess that up.

According to the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, the definition of music is: "an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color."

Not sure what they mean by "color", but Rock has more of those than Rap does. :P

I don't agree with the TC's analogy anyway.

De la soul is awesome. good reply.

I think color means adding a variety to a song. Not just chords, a bass riff, same drum beat, verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bride/chorus/(optional ending).

Like coming up with time signature changes throughout the song, adding solos and different chord progressions and crescendos and breakdowns and making the song interesting to listen to, and not bland and repetive throughout the entire thing.

I think that means adding lyrics with figuritive language that can cause someone to think about the song, and research more about what the artist or narrator is speaking about. Not "yadda yadda sometin' sometin'....BOOTS WITH THA FUR!"

Also, horrible analogy TC.

to my music appreciation class, tone color is simply the difference in sound between voices (instruments). an intrument's tone color is its unique sound it produces. its what makes a tuba a tuba and a piano a piano. kinda simple really.

There is some really though provoking rap out there, just as there can be some incredibly drull rock. Its not a one size fits all comparison here. Before you can even begin to make those kinds of comparisons you have to have listened to: K-Os Common Lupe Fiasco 9th Wonder etc
