At least that's what the leaders of Hewlett-Packard are claiming. In an article published from Games Radar on April 5th, Lars Butler said "I believe the days of the console are numbered". He also said that the gaming potential of PCs could render consoles obsolete. Could this be a twist in the whole "PC is dying" claim from the past 7 years?

Roy Taylor, vice president of Nvidia, also painted a "rosy future" for the mouse and keyboard side of gaming; claiming that "Our advantages as developers is what we know is coming." "And what is coming is far ahead of the console. You will see a huge difference between what you can get on a PC and a console."

HP plans to roll out a new line of gaming gear later this year including a curved computer display designed to immerse players in the action.

Correct. It's why Epic just recently spoke out about how PC gaming is not what it once was and it's also why Gears of War is exclusive to a console despite Epic starting out on the PC.

Actually, Epic and id Software aren't what they used to be. PC is fine if not better than ever.

Doesn't counter my argument in any way.

I can just use Mass Effect as another example. Bioware used to be PC only, but not anymore. It must be because console gaming is finished right?

I think they are just trying to hype up their products. There will always be a place for PC Gaming but I don't think it can take the place of the consoles especally in the direction consoles seem to be going.  Best way to say it, there is not way a keyboard and mouse can take the place of a Wii-mote... or six-axis for that matter.  Also I can't see PC Gaming comming back up ever... with the requirements of PC Games compared to your... well... lower model computers, much has to change before that could ever work out.
Just my thoughts.

Hewlett Packard is a wannabe, can't get into the console market with the big boys so it slags it off. If it wants to get into the PC gaming industry then go ahead, plenty have come and gone. PC gaming is still and has always been a niche market.

Mass Effect will come to PC also. And besides, this article doesn't say anything about this generation of consoles dying.

Nothing is finished or will be in a near future. Console and PC both have their cons and pros and both are growing when it comes to gaming.

The vast majority of thecons levied against PC gaming are merely misconceptions construed by blind console fanboys. Not saying there are some, but most of them are wrong.

Epic is still a PC developer, and without the PC gaming community, you would never have Gears to begin with(Nor would I since I own the game as well). Second, these companies are coming out and saying this because they see gaming components getting extremely cheap for the PC. Also, there will be a day, not to distant in the future, where you will add a component to your PC, that will stream a video signal to your TV. It's the new Wireless standard that was just passed, able to stream HD content around your house in a continuous stream. You will no longer need a console box next to your TV. You see, it's not the death of console gaming, it's the death of how it's being delivered to the consumer at this point. There will still be all your favorite console games, but your setup will change. The PC will have a much bigger role in providing the next GTA or Halo 4. That's all. People are misreading what's been said.

this is a bit like saying that the PS3 and the 360 make the wii obsolete. its nonsense. Pc has always been at the forefront of technology and it is where devs take more risks. stalker would never be concieved for a console. the devs also wouldnt be allowed 6 years dev time. the PC is the place to experiment and take risks. however this has always been the case and yet the console business is doing better than ever. every platform has its strengths. PC has its sheer horse power, unique games and mouse and keyboard. the consoles, though not as powerful, offer better bang per buck and are easier to use. every console game is guranteed to work with its respective console. consoles are also backed up by a massive corperation that does everything it can to promote its machine...something the PC lacks. no platform is going to render any other useless.

Bioware is still a PC dev, they are making Dragon Age for the PC only, while Mass Effect is currently 360 only. It's very easy to make 360 and PC game concurrently, that is why we are seeing a lot of PC games also coming to the 360. It's simple logic really. Don't forget, the 360 is a PC, it's just locked down tight with software made by MS to only allow certain functions. The same goes for the PS3 and the Wii.

As long as high end gaming PC's cost 2, 3, and sometimes 4 times what a console costs and the games are not looking even twice as good as the best console games out, console games will never die.

And don't forget that right now that the capabilities of hardware far exceeds the capabilities of developers to utilize that power.  I don't see that changing any time soon so it doesn't matter if there are DX 10 drives...its how many games take advantage of it.  Right now...ONE...Crysis.  Is that enough reason to pay $600 for that video card?  I don't think so.

Consoles are here to stay for a while.

Considering Console gaming is steadily increasing in sales and the PC isn't anywhere near matching console sales (in total, not just one console) I have to call BS on this.

PCs were the only console that had positive growth for four consecutive fiscal terms. Not saying console are dying, but they're showing more growth.

Excuse me buddy, but my PC cost under a grand and it runs my games with beautiful resolution, exceeding that of my 360. You don't need a 2000 dollar rig! Also, a PC is used for many other tasks than gaming, so you are paying for a whole lot more. Gaming on your rig is simply going to be just the cost of an updating your graphics card, as Vista is requiring companies to ship their PC's with much more power under the hood, ram and raw processing power to be more specific. DX10 is just the next advancement in interfacing video cards with your PC, it's just the beginning, and Crysis isn't the only game to look forward to. There is a huge list of titles that justify a purchase of a 150-300 dollar video card, as you don't need an 8800 to enjoy them.

Oh and yea....if you wanna play the latest games you need to change your Video card at least 8-9months......and how much are they??? 599-699 right?? Right!!! So a PC is kind of expensive after a while. Always needs to be upgraded. a Console is for people who doesn't want to deal with that. But I too will upgrade my PC before Crysis arives...:)  unless it comes out on the PS3 wich is not impossible

A video card does not cost nearly that much money, and you don't need to upgrade often. And also, PC games are fifty dollars, whereas most console games are sixty. And if you get alot of games, those ten dollars apiece adds up. >_>

Considering Console gaming is steadily increasing in sales and the PC isn't anywhere near matching console sales (in total, not just one console) I have to call BS on this.

PCs were the only console that had positive growth for four consecutive fiscal terms. Not saying console are dying, but they're showing more growth.

Where exactly did you acertain this information? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just want to see it for myself.

Sorry for the late response, I was baking cookies. I am including software sales from both the NPD, even if they don't include online distribution, the largest party of PC game sales.

[QUOTE="True_Gamer_"][QUOTE="HunAndras1984"]Oh and yea....if you wanna play the latest games you need to change your Video card at least 8-9months......and how much are they??? 599-699 right?? Right!!! So a PC is kind of expensive after a while. Always needs to be upgraded. a Console is for people who doesn't want to deal with that. But I too will upgrade my PC before Crysis arives...:) unless it comes out on the PS3 wich is not impossibleHunAndras1984

Are you clueless about hardware? Oh yea you are clueless...
If a $900 PC outperforms the console now it will always outperform it...

PCs have been ahead of consoles since the start, it hasn't ever changed anything.

world of warcraft disagrees with your post. and poops all over it for that matter.

Wrong. World of Warcraft has, what, 8 million subscribers? And that's being generous. Now let's compare that to the tens  (possibly hundreds) of millions of people who invest in console gaming. All of a sudden, WOW is very insignificant.

Plus theres a ton of sales data that supports my argument. Don't make me get it and own you up and down the street. :|
