$800 (hell even a $1000) PC is pointlessly expensive?
What do you own instead?
A $300-400 console (if you want a hard drive, whichi s 99% necessary, you are paying that much, I could include controller costs too, since people include mouse/keyboard in PC costs all the time, but I'll be the bigger man)
A non-Gaming PC ($350-600 on amazon, depending on model)
That's $800 to $1000 total for two inferior devices, plus the inconvenience of having to switch between two devices when going from home PC things to gaming (or vica-versa), as opposed to one superior, all-in-one device. Yet most of you guys believe the console setup is a better choice.
Lets apply that logic elsewhere shall we?
A large variety of people own/want a smart phones that cost anywhere from $300 to $500 straight up, or $100 to $200 with a monthly fee of at least $50 (lets assume you bought it with a plan)
The alternative would be:
A $50 normal cellphone (texting and calling, that's it) that's much cheaper with a much cheaper monthly bill
An dedicated MP3 player (lets pick one with a hardrive comparable to a smart phone, that's around $100)
For mobile iinternet, you would either have to change the above MP3 into a $300 Ipod touch or similar internet/MP3 device, or lug around a laptop (I won't include its cost, I'll just hypothetically assume you already have a laptop).
That's $450 for three inferior, limited devices (except for possibly the laptop, but that's waay bigger and less convenient than a little smarphone, and doesn't feature calling, phone texting etc...)
Or, you could $200 up front and $50-100 a month (or $400 to $500 and get a plan later) for an all in one, conveneient device.
Most people today will choose the superior convenince and higher price of a smartphone. But then why are people less likely to choose superior convenience with an equal or slightly higher price of a gaming PC over a home console + utility PC combo?
The answer, bias and ignorance. Most (note, I said "Most") non-PC-gamers know very little about the perks of PC gaming, believe ridiculous negative rumors about the platform, and have never experienced true PC gaming in order to properly judge it, and they may also lack the foresight to see that the price of a PC is not higher if you take into account cheaper games, and the fact that you are not just replacing a console, but you're non-gaming PC too.
Average Consumer:
"Ooooh coool! That's much better than my..."
But then:
"Meh, I'll stick with my..."
