Scientifically it's been repeatedly proven that the controller is more enjoyable than a keyboard and mouse.
Though the mouse is superior in precision, modern controllers are superior in moving objects through a 3d environment. Moving object in a 3d environment is vital to creating close combat systems where it's more important for the player to have their character in the right position than aiming in the right area. Hence pc games tend to focus on ranged combat with games, and consoles tend to have much more close combat with games like Halo, and Gears of War. If you've ever studied game psychology you know that close combat is pretty much B&B for gaming enjoyment. It always provides engagement, adrenaline, and a reaction out of the player. So you can say what you want about precision, but the evidence for which is more enjoyable definitely leans towards the controller.
skrat_01
No, just no, and you are incorrect about Halo and Gears of War.
'If you have ever studied game physchology' well considering I'm studying as a designer, I know that a control function is more 'enjoyable', when a games design caters specifically for it, or has been designed around it.
That chunk of text is an assumption, not 'scientific'.
Hats off the most ridiculous things I have read in ages, source or no source.
There's no direct link to these studies because they're not publically published. You can request a copy from absolute quality, or emsense , but unless you've got a serious academic study, or work for a company that has used their service I really doubt you'll get any info. Also it's not like you'd be able to understand it once you got it.
Stalker and crysis would be impossible without M&KB it's a much more accurate systemmarkop2003
Now thats a stupid comment. I can't say anything about Stalker but I played Crysis with my 360 controller. While is may have suck horribly it was defiantly not impossible...

I think I'll just use my 360 controller from now on with PC games that support it. Stalker Clear Sky doesn't have 360 controller support. Not sure about SoC.
Personally, I think only RTS and first-person games need the keyboard and mouse to work. Maybe you've gotten used to autoaiming on consoles?
Everything else (mostly, off the top of my head) plays better with a controller.
meh depends on the genre
imo
Consoles control better in: platformers, FPS's, action adventure
PC's control better in: RTS's, Strategy games, simulators (IE: Sims, and the Tycoon games), and puzzle games.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The Counter-Strike clans around the world laugh...
mouse+keyboard is the ultimate FPS control...
I got my first gaming PC a few weeks ago. I spent a lot of money on it but something is stopping me from enjoying PC gaming. It's the damn M&KB. Playing games with it is horrible. I honestly can't understand why most people say it's better. Playing Crysis and Stalker Clear Sky with the mouse was so frustrating. Aiming was a nightmare. Maybe me being left handed makes it harder? IDK. I know I don't like it though. Anyone else prefer the controller?x-2tha-z
Troll thread confirmed.
[QUOTE="da_illest101"]
agree with you, i never understood what was fun about using a mouth and a keyboard
ogvampire
well no wonder, you should try to use a 'mouse' next time... not a mouth ;)
I lol'ed :lol:Let's see:
M/K vs controller
M/K better than controller in: FPS, TPS, Adventure, RTS, most WRPGs and MMORPGs, some action/adventure games were you aim, Simulators like The Sims, Tycoon games.
Controller better than M/K in: Fighters, Racing , Sports, 3-D platformers, some action/adventure games that rely heavily on 3-D movement.
Am I missing something?
It's not as accurate and it's sluggish. The keyboard and mouse is the most precise and fastest movement/aiming option. What about theWii Controller for FPSers? I prefer it over standard controllers. Is it better than a M&KB?
trugs26
Thumbs up to you.It all comes down to preference. Some games shouldn't be played with a controller and some games shouldn't be played with a KB/M.

True, if we are only going to consider 1st and 3rd person shooters. Anyway, I find auto aim to be more distracting then being helpful mainly in games like Halo 3 and COD4 when you're actually trying to gun down your target.Anything can be played better with a Keyboard/Mouse, except Action & Fighting Games. The only reason why you would dig your control more is because it's always accompanied by its best friend, Mr Auto Aim. Meaning you fail.

Not only racing games, racing sim games. Once on BHMotorsports I saw a vid of a guy who beat and owned another dude in Richard Burns Rally while using a Keyboard, and the other dude was using some fancy Logitech wheel.
Here's the thing about a mouse. What kind of skill does it take to literally put your finger where you want to shoot? That's like walking up to a target and shooting the gun instead of shooting it from afar. Bread_or_Decide
It takes some relative amount of skill unless you're playing something like CoD4, then yes it is practically point and click.

That's like walking up to a target and shooting the gun instead of shooting it from afar. Bread_or_DecideYou're implying that it takes skill to use a gamepad for shooter solely because it an inferior tool in comparison to the mouse? I don't think that's fair to imply that. The challenge should not lie in the controls but in the content of the game.
It sound like you are refering to the keyboard.I just LOVE the controller defenders' logic: the more ridiculously cumbersome, annoying, non-ergonomic, unnatural and hard the controls are, the better. Why? Because it takes more "skill".
Hanass
It's a redundant argument at the end of the day because PC has access to both control methods while consoles are restricted to game pads.
No matter which control method people decide is better; the only group who can lose this argument are consoles.

Agree 100%. I started out playing FPS's with a controller, so maybe it would be different if I had started out playing PC. I've tried playing COD 4 on PC and I just can not get into it like I would on a controller. Moving with the arrows is what I hate most.

Hey everyone! This guy does not play with WASD he plays with the arrow keys! BAWAHAHAHAH!!!11!!!!11!!111!
There is no sarcasm in this post. That was actually my first reaction.
But then you remember the guy's a southpaw. WASD fits naturally for righties, but lefties keyboard with the right hand...which naturally falls towards the arrow keys.I prefer the controller, mainly because there are a lot of buttons on a keyboard, and sometimes if I'm playing in a frantic game situation, I hit the wrong ones. I hate turning with a mouse in FPS's too, and I think a controller is just a much smoother means of aiming. But what can I say, people who are good with M&KB could probably destroy a person using a controller because they can aim much more quickly.

Not true(atleast for me) I am a lefty and using arrows would be a nightmare. If you played games on the PC, you wouldn't need to ask that question. Place your left hand fingers on WASD (middle finger controls both W and S), and your pinky should have easy access to both CTRL and SHIFT (usually crouching and sprinting respectively) while your thumb rests on the space bar (the default jump button). Your ring finger has easy access to Q and Z, and your index finger has easy access to a wide range of buttons (E, R[eload], F[lashlight], C). All without having to move your hand from that position. The same feat is not possible using the arrow keys.xDimMaKAnd what if the gamer is a southpaw, meaning the left hand is on the mouse?

I've always been under the impression that you place the mouse in your strong hand since it has better fine motor control (put it this way, if you can write better with one hand, you can mouse better with that hand) which is necessary to make the small but precise movements needed to properly aim in an FPS and pick the unit in an RTS. How many people use kb/m for their racing games rather a controller on PC? Sure you can use a kb/m to play a racing games, but analog is better suited for them.
