Lair on ps3 is a good sign that ps3 has the resources and tools to make 512mb of ramlook like 2gigs on a PC.
Ram is hardly what good graphics result from. (Unless you are talking about video ram)
First off, it will never reach PC Crysis level graphics. It's impossible unless you use very long, and very time consuming (ie, it wouldn't have a playable fps rate) alternate.
Second, ram is mainly used to store data. Level data, AI memory, variables etc. Without a large amount of ram, the huge islands wouldn't work without reducing size (Whether it's textures, number of enemies, creating less areas to explore).
So don't count on either console running Crysis like you would on a PC.
well, i never said it will look just like the pc version that has aintel quad core and 8800gtx's in SLI. What i was saying was that it will hit that mark where its going to feel like Crysis. PS3 has that potential to reach that goal so does x360 but not as good, x360's cpu and dvd storage is going to cripple pretty much everything.
wow you keep making yourself look stupid and stupider you don't need a 8800gts in sli with a quad core to run it on maxtry like a $115 x1950pro, $100 x2 4600, and $75 for 2 gigs of ram all that stuff along with the other stuff should run it on max easysome quality ram
as for the gpu
those 75$ are faster and more space then any console and the gpu is more powerfull.

the X1950pro is a pile of crap, an 8800GTS will out perform it hands down, and is about $260-280. you really dont know jack about hardware it seems. you dont need that much to run crysis, it isnt that expensive, please stop making threads, they just keep getting worse. i love my PS3, but i dont have delusions about what it can do. you live in a fantasy land it seems.

thats not the 1950 vide card he was talking about, they come in many different models, the one he mentioned is the cheap one with only 12pixel pipelines.

exactly what I was going to say, this game requires 2 gigs of ram to play.
PC ram is different from console RAM, pcs have to run a s*** load of stuff in the background. And PS3 has uber uber fast VRAM 3.2GHz RAM. Also streaming textures and compression could make it possible with the 512mbs of RAM on current gen consoles.
only ps3 can stream textures and ps3 doesnt need to compress anything, it has enough space.
360 can do it, I mean gears of war did it but the disk fills up pretty quickly. Not to mention direct x is known for being horribly unefficient at managing RAM. PS3s blu ray disk and the fact that it uses Open GL will become great assets in the future.

I agree with the fact that the game would have to be toned down a bit to play on consoles, the fact that it requires 2 gigs of ram on computer doesn'ttranslate toconsoles. Computers use up alot more ram than consoles due to operating systems and backround apps.

I read somewhere that with the PS3's RAM (I hate being so vague on a source), it can has general memory that can help support other tasks, but then it has specialized memory which cannot. Is that not less efficient than more RAM which can perform any task?
not sure i understand what you are saying here. i think you were trying to say that 512 of general purpose ram is somehow better. if that were the case, gaming PC's would be dominated by unified memory, and built in everything. meanwhile that is not the case. as you can guess video ram and system ram are different. they function differently.
there is no real purpose of being able to shuffle ram around when unified, cause it will serve no real purpose. you cant reduce system ram too low, nor can you reduce video ram too low cause both are needed. it becomes a fight of what needs ram. normally it cant even be changed on the fly, and has to be changed through bios on PC's, not sure on the 360, but chances are its the same way since it shares so much with normal PC structure.
unified ram is always done for cheapness, not for performance. i doubt either one in this case really affords much of a performance gain, but unified ram does not give any sort of edge, and from experience in it, its quite the opposite.
LMAO @ this thread. Crytek AND EA confirmed that Crysis as we know it will never se the light of day on consoles. Sure, a "dumbed down" port is physically possible, but it is NOT going to happen. It is heavily rumored that Crytek themselves are going to develop a seperate game using Cryengine 2 on the PS3. That seems to be a very, very solid possibility.
