I know people who pirate theoccasionalgame, as I'm sure most of us do. They're not inherently bad people. They're not evil master criminals. They are, however, the reason why the PC market is so easily disregarded by the majority of publishers. PC gamers sit back and complain about howBulletstormis only getting a console demo, or how a roleplaying game has been "dumbed down" to make it simple enough for a controller. Who can honestly blame the publisher, though? If I were EA, I would actuallypullthe PC version ofCrysis 2right now.

I've tried to argue in the corner of pirates before, but screw it. It's not a corner that deserves to be fought in. I would, in fact, encourage developers to ignore the PC market altogether now. Sorry, but why should anybody support the platform? Sure, there are paying customers, and it would suck for them, but what kind of businessman would open a store in a city where stores are robbed multiple times a day? An idiotic businessman.

Link.

Harsh words.

Piracy is pathetic, but do devs need to pull support of PC gaming altogether for it. Console games have their fair share of piracy issues too, along with used games. It doesn't surpise me at all who wrote this, either.

I think he meant to say "wife"

Consoles have a bigger marketshare, but Pc is currently more profitable it seems. Console revenue going down, PC sales and revenue getting a very good boost. If you take a CD Projekt style approach to PC you'll get plenty of sales, hype, and respect from PC gamers.

All in all, its not the pirates fault. Its the publishers who want to make more money by going after the casual/larger market.

Wait.

In the article it says:

"Crysis 2 is released on March 22, but if you've got a little time and even less scruples, you can play it right now. With almost depressing inevitability, an entire developer build of the game has been leaked online, allowing PC gamers early, free access to Crytek's latest eye-shagger.Killzone 3 was also recently leaked."

"Killzone 3 was also recently leaked"

And then he goes on to only say bad things about PC gamers.

Hasn't the PC platform given life to hundreds of indie developers just these past few years? PC gamers in general seem to be more open to unknown and unadvertised games, that's a quality that's drawing more developers to the platform, not less.

[Second Addendum:I think I was perhaps a bit harsh toward the general PC gaming population when I talked about developers ignoring the PC market. That made it sound like I was tarring all PC gamers with the same brush. I am very much into PC gaming myself, and would obviously love to see more PC games. It's slowly become my choice for several shooters and roleplaying games over the past year and a half. What I failed to communicate was that by ignoring the PC market, developers could potentially shame pirates in a "spoiled it for the rest of us" way, but even so, it was likely an unfair suggestion.

I stick by everything else -- that the PC market has earned its stigma, that piracy is theft, and that pirates should admit what they are and think about the potential long-term damage that widespread theft could do. As far as supporting the PC market goes, I do hope that games remain profitable on computers. That is, after all, why I am so concerned about PC piracy.]

 Well at least he's man enough to admit it when he's trolling.

I do agree with most of what he said outside of the ignoring the PC market part.

So this fat troll masquerading as a journo thinks its a good idea to drop the sequel of a game on the very platform it sold 3 million copies on? Is he for real? do even the most ignorant, deplorable, fact-hating, truth despising anti-PC gaming trolls on here agree with this logic?

Gaming will never be taken seriously by the wider society whilst trolling articles, being blatantly paid off for reviews and copious other examples of cronyism are considered acceptable. I like gaming, and I'd like it to be seen one day as a genuine form of artistic expression, as well as a scource of entertainment. Fat clowns like Jim Sterling are a cancer on the industry.

So, ill ask you the question I just asked on my previous post. If you were a publisher, would you drop the sequel of a game on the platform it sold 3 million copies on?

Does this appear to be an example of sound logic to you?

Utterly stupid rant. Especially the World of Goo 90% piracy rate complaint. On Steam alone the game sold 100,000k copies. If we were to speculate that the game has sold a total of 200,000 copies (thanks to their "pay what you want sale" which sold ~60k, and you need to factor in other digital outlets). For an indie game that cost them under $100k to make, they've made an absolute killing on the PC. Piracy rate claims are utterly meaningless. Is the author suggesting that if not for piracy, the game would have sold 2 million copies?

I don't think so, Tim.

Just yesterday we got a report on Super Meat Boy selling more on Steam than on XBLA. A 2d PLATFORMER. A genre traditionally as console-centric as it gets, and a game that comes in at under a gig. Easily pirate-able, yet still sells better on PC.

So... are you people that agree with Sterling going to even state your reasons for supporting his argument, or are you just going to come out with lines like "he speaks the truth", because I've already seen a few good arguements from people who think he is a fool ..a lot more than what you are presenting...

While I agree that the rant was stupid, he's actually he's correct regarding the World of Goo piracy:

Carmel explains how they reached the dramatic figure.

"first, and most importantly, how we came up with this number: the game allows players to have their high scores reported to our server (it's an optional checkbox). we record each score and the IP from which it came. we divided the total number of sales we had from all sources by the total number of unique IPs in our database, and came up with about 0.1. that's how we came up with 90%."

Because people only play games from one computer in one location right? Laptops don't exist at all.
