DF: Xbox One X at Gamescom - Enhanced Games Previewed!

• Quantum Break not rendering 4K and the only non native 4K shown
• Gears 4 is Native 4K and one of the more impressive games 30FPS Looks like highest PC settings (unconfirmed)
• Titanfall 2 looks like the PC version while using a dynamic scaling. A step up from the PS4 Pro
• Killer Instinct Native 4K. Video elements are still the original versions from the game.
• F1 2017 was native 4K and had good AA but framerate was suffering. (We know it won't be native 4k when released though)
• Path of Exile 4K/60
• World of Tanks native 4K/30
• Running what looks like retail systems and not dev kits

• All software was indeed running on Xbox One X hardware
• Gears of War 4 was running at native 4K with high-end texture assets previously exclusive to the PC version of the game. Texture filtering gets a big upgrade over the standard console too, with none of the improvements having any kind of noticeable hit to performance.
• Quantum Break was one of the few titles not shown running at native 4K, instead using the same upscaling technique as the base model. A guess is that the base resolution is possibly closer to 1080p before the smart upscaling kicks in. Regardless, the increase in clarity over the Xbox One title again represents a night and day difference.
• Killer Instinct is native 4K/60fps with no performance drops. The only blemish to the look of the title comes from its video assets, which appear unchanged from the original.
• Path of Exile is native 4K/60fps delivering a full frame-rate, ultra-HD experience
• F1 2017 is operating at native 4K. Image quality on this one is off the charts - if it's not a match for the top-end PC experience, it's very close. However, while the title targets 60fps, its current performance level often falls somewhat short, with dropped frames and noticeable screen-tear.
• Rise of the Tomb Raider is native 4K
• Titanfall 2 presents a mid-way point between the PlayStation 4 Pro version and the top-end PC experience. You get what looks like the Sony console's visual set, paired with the extra clarity found running the PC version at a higher resolution [uses dynamic 4K]. In effect, all that's missing from the top-tier Titanfall 2 presentation is ambient occlusion and some shadow effects. The series' signature 60fps gameplay remains fully intact.
• DF will be looking at Shadow of War, Assassin's Creed Origins and Halo Wars 2 in more depth in standalone features, as they do have access to direct feed assets but they can still share the following initial observations:
• It seems that there are actually two AC Origins builds at Gamescom. The Microsoft booth seems to be running an older version of the code that has trouble resolving high resolution textures in the middle and far distance while the Ubisoft booth we visited to capture is looking a lot more solid - LODs still aren't at the same level as the E3 trailer, but it's significantly closer. Developers on-site told us that they're aiming for resolution first and aim to bring up LODs to the required spec closer to release.
• Shadow of War is native 4K, with performance ticking over nicely at the target 30fps - the only issues cropping up in really packed encounters with hundreds of entities in play
• Halo Wars 2 is native 4K
• World of Tanks is native 4K
• DF was told by Monolith that working with the Xbox One X is basically the same as developing for the base model, albeit with a far higher level of processing power to work with. The simplicity of development likely explains the consistency in results they saw across titles regardless of the source material. The scaling here is essentially in line with Microsoft's messaging, not to mention its internal early hardware benchmarks.
• DF feels that with every new PlayStation 4 Pro game that comes along, there's a sense of the unknown about what enhancements are actually going to manifest, and the extent to which an investment in a 4K screen actually pays off. By contrast their impression of the Xbox One X looks far more clear cut, saying that the Xbox One X is the console for your 4K screen, and anything else in addition to that (like Tomb Raider's multiple rendering modes) is a bonus

That is pretty cool. Not planning on getting X1X but following the tech is interesting enough and gotta give credit to MS on the hardware but they still need more new IP exclusive games.

Wonder what the state of path of exile controller play is like on pc, will pick up the One X version just for that. Guessing this version wont share servers with PC if skill management will be too different.

Looks great so far. Looks like this will be the best hardware Microsoft has made since the original Xbox. Glad to see they are back in the fight. Now just need some true exclusives (not available on PC) and I'm sold on it. Right now have no need for it. Have fun Xbox fans.

WTF, World of Tanks at 30fps? Wasn't this thing supposed to be a powerhouse? At least give the people less resolution with 60fps. My guess is that the POS CPU is holding them back from even doing it at 1080p/30fps. ? @ paying $500 for 30fps in 2017.

Gamecom version is currently 4K native with 60 fps target and it's dipping below 60 fps. 4K CB 60 fps bias could be another game mode for F1.

I shown QB at 4K with medium settings and any higher graphics settings, the resolution needs to drop.

But even my 1080ti struggles to run QB at 4k native with max settings. Partially beause the game does not want to fully utilize my GPU.

Because it is a fu** up game on PC,in fact the windows 7 DX11 steam version was faster than the DX12 windows 10 version that fu** the game was.

It's not using checkerboarding, it's temporal reconstruction, also...

So that means if the game is turning in a 4K pixel count it is rendering at roughly 3136x1764 which is 5,529,600 pixels and also exactly 6x 1280x720, which is just shy of 3200x1800 (5,760,000 pixels).

So from what it appears with this system they were able to increase the resolution of Quantum Break by 6x.

? @ Wrongvalencia still claiming XboneX is equal to a 1070 after being proven wrong by DF. What a clown.

Are you gonna buy one? Games will come, from the looks of it this thing should increase the amount of developers approaching the platform so more games seems like an assurance.

Cows are the ones bashing the X1X because certain titles aren't hitting native 4K, which is stupid in the first place because MS left it up to the developers how to use the power. And they're also undermining how much better the X1X tech is compared to PS4 or PS Pro. They hide behind PC. I'd also rather the devs utilize the power to make 1080p or 1440p 60fps, and guess what? A lot are, some even native 4K/60fps, or checkerboard/dynamic, which I don't care if it is not native 4K or not. And get out if here, MS has been delivering every year except this year. But Cuphead, Forza 7, and PUBG will stop it from being a complete shit year from MS.

I will get an Xbox One eventually, if only for Horizon 3, but when, and which one, really depends on the state of exclusives for me. If Microsoft can push out something like a, say, good Fable 4 on the Xbox One, I'd definitely get one now.
