This is old but with the upcoming beta I want to know how pc gamers here feel about it.

So PC gamers how do you feel about this? I personally don't care as DRM no matter how lame it is, has never really bothered me but I know alot get upset for these things. We all know diablo 3 requires an internet connection but did you guys know that there's no offline single player at all? The single player portion will be handled online by blizzard's servers, which means that you could possibly lag in SP and no internet = no play at all, even after verification (unlike starcraft where you could go as long as you verified at login)

So what do you think about this PC gamers?

Doesn't affect me. Don't really care.

A *few* people have legitimate complaints given their DRM. But its not that serious.

Kinda sucks.... but wont affect me much... I'll be playing online only anyway... I guess it'd suck if my internet went down and I felt like playing... but that'll happen couple times a year max, so no biggie. CAN NOT WAIT FOR DIABLO 3 Diablo 3 and SW ToR will take over my life

The always-online DRM right? It sucks. Nothing much else to say about it - it's unnecessary and will only serve to annoy people when their internet is behaving erratically.

But it's Blizzard, so they get a pass on this kind of thing. Dunno why - if any other company did it everyone would flip out. Not buying it anyway - Diablo, while fun, never really captured me like it did some other people.

Most intense DRM ever?

It's meant to be a multiplayer game. Being online is necessary for playing MP. What is intense about that :?

However SC2 wasn't always online, you registered once purchased done - you could play offline fine - I had to do so. Hooboy now this, always online even if you're merrily soloing with the internet out. Nope no chance.

My internet connection is kind of shoddy so I won't be buying D3.

I'll be getting Torchlight II instead. Runic deserves the money anyway.

All the news about this game plus two bad WoW expansions and a disappointing SC2 has lead me to not care about my favorite company at all anymore. They just rehash the same thing over and over. And they still have horrible writers so the stories in their games are in no way appealing. You can check out their older games if you want the same multiplayer. I really don't see what's special about them anymore -- it just reminds me of the way Bioware has gone. Both have trekked down hill in this modern time.

Come on...this is why system wars can never be taken seriously. Why is the reactions so positive for this news? Just because its Diablo 3 and blizzard? I know for a fact if for example Crysis 2 had a similar system Crytek would have been absolutely massacred even worse than they already were...simply because Crysis 2 is viewed in a negative light by most hermits on this forum. Now if Battlefield 3 announces a constant internet connection is required for single player then I wonder what the reaction would be? Actually I dont wonder, I know it would be the same as this thread...largely uncaring! And the reason? Because Battlefield 3 is held in so high regard by most hermits it can do no wrong. Such extensive bias is annoying....

dom2000

The problem with a flexible online system like Diablo 2 had was that it was extremely vulnerable to hacks and exploits that could not be tracked (FYI they completely spoiled Diablo 2's online economy, its biggest point). If everything happens server side it's much likely not going to be as broken as Diablo 2's online was.

Like the game director said, if you don't like the changes you either misunderstood them or don't know what Diablo is about.

In addition to all the other benefits that we believe ultimately come from having everyone online such as an active, centralized community, a popular arena system, accessible character storage, etc. etc. Diablo III is built on a client/server architecture, which means not all the data for the game or mechanics reside on the client (your computer).

This is not too unlike World of Warcraft where the world itself, the art, the sounds, etc. are on your machine, but all of the NPC's and enemies are controlled by the server. Diablo III doesn't function in all of the exact same ways, but things like monster randomization, dungeon randomization, item drops, the outcomes of combat, among others, are all handled and verified by the client talking to the server, and vice versa.

Won't be long before we move to fingerprint readers when you launch a game, and eventually little DNA readers that you prick your finger on (like glucose strips) and it verifies your identity before the game is allowed to launch.

Are you really naive enough to think they haven't thought far ahead enough to take in consideration that it will eventually be cracked?

Don't be condescending about this. You aren't a Blizzard insider so it's not like you could definitively say what they have or have not thought of either.

Whether they thought that far ahead or not they should have realized hacking is inevitable and you shouldn't limit your user base to combat something that will happen no matter what. Not that it would really take that long anyway, games are always cracked within weeks after they come out. I predict the game won't even be out for 2 months before we see RMAH fraud and the equivalents of gold and account selling.

While in fact, Diablo 3 is not a single player game (nor was Diablo 2, but this is System Wars and, ironically enough, common sense is forbidden here).

While in fact, you do need internet to play SP in Diablo 3 since your character is part of your account and not just a file on your PC.

While in fact, you do need internet to play SP in Diablo 3 since your character is part of your account and not just a file on your PC.

"It's not like you could definitely say what they have or have not thought of either" but you in your first post here you said "Could you just say you think I'm a pirate please?"...inconsistency much?

Why are you so stuck on the piracy point? That's not the only reason the always online DRM was put in place like you're struggling so hard to show.

really? piracy isn't the only reason DRM is used for? because i have trouble picturing any other reason to have something that VERIFIES AUTHENCITY in your game.
