Battlefield's Brand Manager Kevin O'Leary has revealed that DICE is targeting "a constant 30fps" for the console versions of Battlefield 3.

"We always have a bare minimum of constant 30fps if not higher," said O'Leary talking to GamerZines earlier this week. "It's always about that great quality experience, so if framerate is something that we see is lagging, we'll bring that back up."

Battlefield 3's closest rival Call of Duty has continued to output at a steady 60fps, while the most recent console Battlefields, Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, have both rendered at 30fps.

Some gamers claim that a higher frame rate allows for more responsive controls and less input lag during intense multiplayer sessions.

Ugh, I'd hate to play at 30 fps.. It's so much better at 60 fps. It makes a huge difference in BC2.

Well DICE, you'll have to greatly reduce the graphics quality if you want to hit 60 FPS, perhaps graphics and destructibility both in order to give the CPU time as well. I'll probably be enjoying 60 FPS @ 1080p on my PC though

At 720p, I'm sure we'll be able to hit 60 FPS "maxed out" DX11 with 2x AA, and I'm fairly confident at 1080p "maxed out" with NO AA, 60 FPS should be close to achievable on like a GTX 480.

I am honestly bothered at the notion of the DX11 tessellation being aimed at GTX 4xx + and Radeon 6xxx series implementation since their's is much higher/better than that of the Radeon 5xxx series, as I have a 5850. But I think I'll be perfectly fine.

And what evidence do you have to back up this claim? Yes Dice claimed the trailers are running on a 6970 or something along those lines isnt it? we heard the same thing about Crysis 4 years ago. realworld performance is quite different. No AA and no 1080P isnt maxxed out (assuming your monitor supports that). 2x AA at least.

I agree with this. 30fps is just horrible after playing games 60+fps. CoD will always have a certain appeal just due to how smooth it feels for a console game. I'm really surprised that more dev's don't prioritise 60fps ahead of various post-processing effects etc for console games, because if I can't play a game 60fps on my PC, then graphical details will always go down in order to accomidate a smooth, screen tearing free experience.

Not bring resolution into play, I consider "maxed out" to be all graphics settings at their max values with the exception of AA as it is the last thing I turn on when it comes to tweaking. Even with the PC version the focus on development, I don't think DICE will go so far as to render 5850s and GTX 460s obsolete as high end graphics cards. Only two games give me trouble at 1080p: Crysis 2 and Metro 2033, thanks to their "mandatory" AA settings (yes there are back ways of disabling it but .......eh). Kill the AA, and the performance will certainly jump. As much as I appreciate Crysis 2's mixed edge detect and MSAA (IIRC), I'd gladly leave it at the door.

I agree. I can stand 30 FPS fine.

Only problem is if the framerate drops, it becomes really noticable.

Why is this even being discussed? Of course they will go for 30fps, like all their console games. This game will be less demanding than Crysis on PC, people should run it fine.

You would think that after almost 4 years of COD dominance on consoles, competitors might actually think "gee, maybe we should shoot for 60fps in our next game."

"Some gamers claim that a higher frame rate allows for more responsive controls and less input lag during intense multiplayer sessions" that is fact big difference even with a gamepad 60fps is so much smoother and for kb/m on pc prefer to get even higher fps for maximum responsiveness in the controls. But its either the framerate is lowered or the graphical detailed is lowered on console's can't have both. Call of duty is running a modified 10 year old engine and runs at 1024x600 and the quality of the graphics is all low end compared to todays games.

A lot of PC gamers were able to max out BC2 @ launch. By the time this game releases a new generation graphic cards already will be released and todays top end cards like the gtx580 ( on wich Dice showed the ingame footage) will be rolling for under 200 bucks.

So yes, it feels good to be a PC gamer :)

Yes, and it's a renamed Doom 3 engine. The game also took an huge impact texture wise and is running sub HD. Now add destruction to it and 24 player multiplayer. Your console would explode trying to maintain 60 fps.

I guess I'm fine with constant 30fps, I've never had a problem with Uncharted or Killzone being 30fps. I'm glad that they aren't going to have any framerate dips though, since they said it'll be a minimum of 30fps.

Doom 3 with mods does look better than Rage

but anyway im pretty sure Rage will be 720p, at least on Xbox 360

Exactly what I thought. I hope now Dice will stop dissing Cod as they have already failed beating it. The controls on cod are so smooth compared to BC2. Oh well maybe next time but defiantly not this time.

Not on the PC. Playing any thing less than 50-60, there is a noticeable sluggish feel.

On a controller, a steady 30fps feels smooth.

Good news for the console gamers that DICE is targeting at 30fps and not at 25-30fps like the overwhelming majority of console games.
