Alright people,

I know this topic won’t really “cater” to the younger crowd (y’know, the one that grew up on tablets, youtube, streaming services, and commercials before movies.) but I thought “Hey, what the hell.”

Did any of you out there subscribe to any of the old gaming magazines back in the day? If so which ones?

Going back into the Ol’ memory banks (who says that?) I vividly remember having an actual subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly (or as they were commonly called EGM.) that I would receive right in my mailbox every month.

That’s right younger gamers, an actual physical book comprised of various articles of a thing called “paper” in an actual physical mailbox outside your house… not your email inbox (Wait'a patronize younger gamers, Ninja. You dolt!).

I actually looked forward to it every month as back then it was my only window into what was on the horizon in the video-gaming world. Bear in mind this was before the internet/during its infancy so the printed published magazines were your most up to date source for info.

I’m pretty sure EGM was the only mag I had an actual subscription for but I know I bought almost every other gaming mag my eyes came in contact with at the grocery store or other various “book-type” stores as well.

Off the top of my head I can recall getting almost every issue of…

PSM

Official Playstation magazine (C’mon, everyone bought the “officials” so that they could get the free demo discs. That’s right young gamers, that was our “demos.” You had to pay to get a magazine that had around 5 to 10 demos on a disc.)

Official Dreamcast magazine

Official Xbox magazine

Tips and Tricks (Had to get those cheat codes lol.)

Nintendo Power

GameFan (I lloooovveeedd gamefan.)

Gamers Republique (Incredible mag as well.)

Next Generation (a few of them here and there.)

Gamepro (Although I was starting to lose favor with them near the end.)

I’m sure there were some others but those were the ones I vividly remember the most.

So gamers, do any of you like me still have piles and piles of old gaming magazines stashed away somewhere in your houses?

Sega Visions, it was like Nintendo power only for Sega, came out mid and if I remember right.

EGM, I started reading and buying this one at issue #2 and kept up with it until they died the first time. Best gaming mag imo.

Gameplay, I would pick up a copy now and then, but it wasn't that great of a mag.

Official Dreamcast Mag, loved the demo disc.

Official Xbox Mag, same as above I loved the demo disc.

Official PS Mag.

I never subscribed to any but I sure bought plenty starting with Your Sinclair and Crash for the Specturm and the ST Format when I move to the Atari ST. My biggest collection would of been EDGE i never missed an issue of that.

I binned them all though when i moved house years ago though as they just took up to much room.

I did the same with all my old porno mags as well. But i put them in a plastic carrier bag and left them in a wooded area for some luck fellow to find.

I had a subscription to Nintendo Power. I would at times pick up a copy of Official Playstation Magazine (mostly for the demo disc) from the grocery store as well but I don't recall ever having a subscription to that one. I would read the other video game magazines while I waited for my mom to finish shopping at the grocery store as well.

I kind of miss them just like a kind of miss video rental stores. They were fun to browse through.

An man, I had a subscription to official playstation magazine for the demos.. Also got to choose a free game when I started the subscription, which was Darkstalkers..

Hmm, I do kind of miss the magazine days.. I mean, I know they are still about, the other day I was reading Edge for the first time in years.. But I can't see myself ever spending money on one these days.

I once bought a magazine that came with a VHS tape that showcased Sega CD games.. Also I think Games Master released a mag that came with a lollypop with a worm inside when Earth Worm Jim launched... Ah the 90's..

Nintendo Power, EGM. I remember getting Dragon Warrior 1 free with Nintendo Power subscription, came back from school as a young kid one day and saw it on my living room table, couldn't believe it. It was the game that probably made me start enjoying RPG titles at the time. This kind of thing would never happen today, such a different world.

Here we had Hyper Magazine that came in the library. That's about it.

While I didnt get a subscription, I got the occasional Playstation mag during the PSX era for the demo discs.

I really miss EGM. I bought al of the magazines at one time or another but always kept a subscription to EGM. Nintendo Power was a must have in the NES days. If you want to talk about being old does anybody remember the old Commodore 64 magazines that would have a few pages of code in them you would type out to see a simple graphic program and song?

I didn't have subcriptions because there weren't any where I live but I did buy the translated Gamepro every month and also had some issues of the original Gamepro, Game Players, Club Nintendo, Video Tips, and another one that I can't remember now but it was something like Computer gamer or gaming or something like that.

I forgot to mention Gamefan. I didn't subscribe to it. But, I bought every copy during the time I had a 3DO. It was the one magazine that featured decent 3DO coverage.

Wow, didn't realize so many people subbed to OXM.

OT: Didn't subscribe, but bought monthly OPM for the demos. (I know the subscription was cheaper overall, but I was a teen and didn't want to bug my parents to sub for me)

Those were the days man. I would sometimes buy them just for the demo discs included. Found some of my favorite games that way. Star Trek A Final Unity comes to mind. Love that game!

I had subscriptions for Nintendo Power, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Gamefan for a few years. Gamefan was such an awesome magazine.
