the question is, can the PS4 save the whole company??
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Nope, because I really don't think about these things, I never cared who was the sales leader between Nintendo and Sega back in the day, nor do I care now who the leader between the current 3 is. These are simply not details that go into my decision making process when buying games and systems. I'm not criticizing people who do think about this stuff a lot, just my own personal opinion.
Only after February 2013. Sony did almost everything right with the PS4 (hardware, dev support, new controller, etc), which made me consider getting one. Xbox One announcement, later that year (forced kinect, no used games, always online, etc) helped on that decision.
Good thing that Phil spencer jumped in right in time for a 180º. Now they are both great systems!
But the damage was already done, it took them too long to reverse those politics they were trying ti implement and like they say, if you punch first you can punch twice, in my case, by the time they went and said " hey, we ain´t doin´ it ! " I had already purchased a PoS4. Another thing I just didn´t like was the size of the console, hell it´s about the size of those early 80´s VCRs we used to have.
To admit a Sony PS4 come back is to admit a Sony PS3 failure. PlayStation was in their prime with the PS2, they had no competition at all. The PS4 is no where near that level. Heck, it could be argued that the PS4 is no where near Xbox 360 level too then since the Xbox 360 got the closest to the PS2 level if you were to admit this Sony PS3 failure. And this PlayStation comeback isn't because of Sony's doing, it's because of their competitor's doing. Despite all this, it's still early in the gen and besides the Wii U, both of the consoles are still selling and developers are still supporting them as if nothing is happening. It's business as usual.
But if you're talking about Sony as a company, well that's another story. They're still liquidizing branches of their company and downsizing their company. Sony are considering selling off their mobile division, Sony already sold Sony Online Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Entertainment gave away rights control of their most lucrative purchased property of Spider-Man. There has to be some failure there when you sell off or close divisions of the company and when you lose control of property. So it's not really much of a comeback as if they're back in a dominate position, they are far from it. It's still early in the gen and with Sony really pushing and funding Virtual Reality as a consumer product for 2016, anything can still happen. That's why it's pure comedy when you see things like "the war is over", "Sony wins the gen", "greatness awaits". In reality the drought continues.
Sony on top again - yes, anticipated
The "Wii" name's sudden irrelevance - no way
The 2013 Xbone circus/near brand suicide - no
It was predicted after Mattrick drove the bus into a volcano. MS was forced to play catch up ever since.
As much of a Sony fan I am, I really did not. Even with e3 2013, I did not expect the PS4 to be as successful as it is now. I also expected the Wii U to make a comeback, given the one year head start and price advantage. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting it to be number 1, but I expected far healthier numbers. It looks like we are heading back to PS2 dominance, which is crazy in today's competitive landscape. What do you think, SW? Did you expect a lopsided win for Sony?
I knew PS4 will be a beast . I was saying again and again that im glad that Sony F'ed everything up with PS3 so theyll learn from their mistakes , stop being arrogant and feel untouchable and go strong and humbled to next-gen ( PS4 ) . I knew Sony had what it takes to admit and learn from their mistakes and provide a solid , as cheap as possible , hardware with the well known Sony exclusives diversity this generation. And the result of that reflects on PS4s sales. Easy peasy for Sony this generation. No more overhyped , overpriced , complicated "craps".
A beast? It's a Kitten with amputeed legs. Completely incapable of "Next Gen". In fact it would be a high powered PC in 2010.
So much so that Sony are already wheeling out Kurtagi nonsense with their 720P VR closed ecosystem headset which already got annihilated by Valve. Please get real. Sony arrogance is coming back. I will laugh at you cows once they announce cloud DRM at E3, they get that arrogant and you will eat up their "#4ThePlayersâ„¢" PR garbage again.
Its a beast compared to X1/Wii U nevertheless. Im not comparing it to PC , im comparing it vs other consoles. Did you see how next-gen Uncharted 4 looked like ? It was impressive.
Also im not a cow , the last Sony console i own is PS2. I cant get more real than i am . PS4 exclusives are on the spot for my taste ( God of War / PT / BLoodBorne / Uncharted 4 / Ratchet / Persona 5 and more ) .
Everything else i dont give a crap about ... VR/PR/PTR/DRM whatever the case i dont care. All i want is a nice price for a console that will keep exclusives coming till next-gen with great diversity on different genres , new IPs and overall quality and thats something only Sony providing till the end of each generation. Thats why this generation im feeling again like buying a console. I have to buy a console since 2000 , thats 15 years ago , with PS2 that is. So after 15-16 years im feeling like buying a console again and yes bro , only Ps4 looks like a great deal.
Wii U will be dead in a year or 2 and its games are one of the same again and again which most of them i dont give a crap ( and for the ones i do i just rent them and thats how im saving alot of money ) and X1 hardware , price and above all exclusives diversity ( let alone multiplatform performance ) underwhelming.
PS4 , for my taste , its an easy choice this generation. All im waiting is a price cut / great bundle.
I saw what Uncharted 4 looked like alright. "Dat 8GB GDDR5" indeed.
A turd is a turd. Your console is a turd
You ought to be talking about if anyone anticipated Microsoft to completely misread the market completely and make the least powerful box.
I expected Sony to easily win this gen sales-wise when they announced a price point $100 less than the Xbone. I wasn't expecting the Xbone to be the better console of the 2, but that seems to be the case at the present and over the next couple of years as well.
Sony is winning in sales and well done to them. But I've been too disappointed with the rest of this gen. Sales is the only good thing happening this gen honestly. Sony has VERY healthy sales, MS has healthy sales and that's it.
For me, no matter who wins it's a hollow victory. The hardware has been more expensive than ever but less exciting than ever. Almost all games are multiplat with the PC, so my X1 is a netflix machine, good quality exclusives are few and far between on BOTH consoles, with only a few proper retail exclusives a year.
The 360 still played tons of console multiplats that weren't on the PC, had some exclusives and had an interesting first year and showed a massive graphics leap across the board.
But well done Sony. Imo MS lost when they dropped Kinect.

SONY has not made a comeback, the Playstation Brand has made a huge comeback but SONY themselves are in Organised Chaos mode and are still Struggling to reach profitability.
People seem to think that SONY is all about Playstation.
News flash, they make other things as well.
I wouldn't call it a comeback because the PS3 is fantastic and sold really well , but things were setting up well for them to succeed more this generation.
- Wii / waggling was clearly a fad , and that left Nintendo bewildered.
- Kinect success not only pushed Microsoft to going upwards of 60% casual to chase that next fad , it also led to the Xbone not releasing in 2012 , when it probably should have. Going head-to-head with Playstation all but insures 2nd place worldwide even if Xbox can take NA. That's fine if you're ok with 2nd , but if you're in it to win it .... that's not very smart.
The scary thing is that apparently Microsoft was going for a 2014 release and had no idea that Sony was going for 2013 , lol. All of the signs were there though - Guerrilla Games , Sucker Punch , Evolution , etc.
- Ken Kutaragi was out and no longer designing PS hardware , and Kaz moved to Sony President and House moved to Playstation President which put the PS4's prospects in a better position. I expected them to stick with blu-ray , have solid and easier to develop for hardware , and release an affordable system at launch this time around.
I didn't expect Microsoft and Nintendo to flop as hard , but it doesn't surprise me either.
@gabensherald: Did Sony send the Yakuza to kill your family? You sound like a raving butthurt lunatic. Anyway I hope you know Sony posted a profit last quarter as every division was profitable. Sony's gaming division also made more money then either MS or Nintendo last quarter and Sony's stock is at a 5 year high. Stay butthurt though!

Wrong. They didn't make anywhere near the revenue Nintendo did. And you are also flat out wrong because Sony's mobile division tanked again. They made a little profit in each division and are expected to post yet another loss next quarter. So on top of being a raving butthurt Sony shill, you are also wrong, Kaz is getting replaced by a man who wants them to stop making consoles, and Sony will pull out of console manufacturing as consoles aren't profitable. But software is. So I do hope you enjoy your Uncharted temple run clones with added "Feels" because that's all you will get, Cow.
But then Sony is a disgusting anti-consumer company. I wouldn't even bother to spit on them if they were on fire, never mind piss.
Sony shed their immense arrogance during the PS3 years, so I figured they would do well enough going into gen 8.
Though I never imagined for a second that Nintendo and Microsoft would be the ones paving their way to victory as if they were the biggest Sony fans around.
What comeback? Its not like Sony has really taken any effort other than saying "We wont pull the shit MS is trying to".
A comeback means they were behind and then came out guns blazing. All they did was walk past when MS was laying on the floor bleeding to death.

Ok , if you say so ... Still UC4 live gameplay demo looked more next-gen than any other game i ever saw up till now , supposedly next-gen that is. Textures, animations, physics, lighting, shadows, atmosphere, depth of view , characters , facials ...everything combined was impressive.
@misterpmedia: The Xbox One is not the least powerful box.
?
I'm hoping you aren't referring to the wiiu.

I am. At least the Xbox One is powerful enough to receive multiplats and AAA third party support.
@gabensherald: Err yes they did and they have been killing Nintendo this gen. Also the company loss is solely from a write down in the mobile division. You also just completely made shit up as they have no plans to replace Kaz as of now. PS is the center of there business so enjoy the ass whooping that is to come you pathetic troll.
PlayStation isnt going anywhere!

Going off Sony's own investor reports. The gaming division Made 27.6 Billion Yen Gross Margin (AKA Profit) which is $228 million dollars.
Nintendo made $31.8 Billion yen which is $270 million dollars
The evidence is here
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/150204_sonypre.pdf
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150128e.pdf
And the Kaz replacement plans have already been leaked http://nypost.com/2015/02/19/cfo-yoshida-rumored-to-take-the-reigns-at-sony-corp/
So no, I didn't make shit up. Sony is still getting beaten by Nintendo in profits and PS is making nowhere near enough money to save Sony. I laugh at you once more, Cow.
@gabensherald: no need to be upset
Why be upset when Valve just completely dominated Sony and their 720P VR piece of trash?
Just demonstrating to the cows the complete obselence of consoles this generation. Even before launch, they lost.
http://hexus.net/gaming/news/pc/81292-pc-games-software-market-exceed-35bn-2018-says-oga/
Only a small fraction of those PC gaming revenues are from Valve/Steam. Most of the revenue is from other PC gaming segments, e.g. MMO, MOBA, F2P, Facebook, etc.
@AzatiS: don't bother. Some people here are pure bias and fanboyism.
Eh, I was just playing the SW game a bit too hard, was feeling truly unruly yesterday for some odd reason, sorry.
I did. You can probably read old old posts of mine stating it as well. Ironically it is the same train of thought that makes me think Nintendo is on the rise.
@gabensherald: Lmao that's only Nintendo's second profit since the a Wii u. It's also doubtful yoshida would sell one of there most successful divisions. Not much to laugh at troll.
So you were exposed as a liar and now moving onto "B-B-But Nintendo never made profit". Newsflash. They only lost money first year of the Wii U. Everything else has been profitable since then.
Keep mooing cow. It amuses me greatly.

But the PS2 was an amazing console, with a fantatsic library of exclusives, western and japanese, accross multiple genres.
The ps4 is a flop machine
Yep and that's why he doesn't work for Microsoft anymore. They got tired of his BS. And Spencer has done a great job despite the PS4 outselling X1.
I thought nothing's gonna stop Microsoft from totally annihilating Sony.
Then again, I never anticipated how ridiculously self destructive a company could be until I witnessed Microsoft handling the X1 release.
I don't know if it's a one guy (Don Mattrick) or it's a culture issue. But things seem really messed up at Microsoft camp.
P.S. I feel Don Mattrick was to the Xbox brand as John Sculley was to the Apple brand. Relentlessly determined, through sheer ignorance, on driving the brand to the ground.
How could we?
Xbox was simply slaying the **** out of PlayStation in America by 20 million, being the go-to console for family oriented audiences (Kinect) and "hardcore" (Live, Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War), backed with Microsoft's insane advertising prowess and as well by remaining extremely competitive in price and bundles (4 GB $199 Xbox was genius)
It was an amazing feat.
The only mistake we all committed here was unwisely underestimating the PlayStation brand's power and overlooking the fact that Sony had the ability to read a market much better than Microsoft ever could.
These 2 factors single-handely had the masses flocking back to PlayStation as soon as Microsoft messed up royally.
