Did you anticipate the Sony comeback?

I'm not going to say I anticipated it, but I will say I sensed a change the last few or couple of years of last gen.

I was one.

360 was coming out with no good exclusives and Sony had many....and it just kept going from there.

I genuinely don't understand you two. For the first few months I was here, I thought you were both trolling because I couldn't possibly believe someone could have such a hard on for a multi billion dollar company that has nothing to do with them.

I disagree. A console brand that was slaughtered 100+ million to 25 million launching a year earlier was suddenly a favorite? Because it was cheaper? was the Dreamcast the favorite over the PS2 then?

I believe the launch game on X1 that hit 1080p and 60 FPS was Forza 5.

Like I said no effing way in hell was a two for two gen dominating brand suddenly an underdog because an opponent they crushed launched first at $100 dollars cheaper. Remember there was a $500 PS3 at launch. That's not how odds or deciding favorites in anything works. By that logic, the Tampa Bay Bucs are favored over the NE Patriots because they get to pick in the draft before the Superbowl champions.

Ps3 is overpriced as hell when BD doesnt bring any positive yet anything different in gaming nor games in the future will ever take advantage of overpriced CELL extra cores , specially when there are tons of negative things developers saying about systems architecture. So where are superior graphics ? I have yet to see them ... lol ...

PS4 will have , as all other playstation consoles had , the most diverse exclusive library ... If Sony made it happen with PS1/PS2 AND PS3 era when they were under huge financial pressure , they will with PS4 as well.

Wii U will be in life support in 2016 and beyond more or less ... Nintendo claims about no more mario games on the system ( main series ) and already talking about next-gen console makes me beleive that Wii U is done after the massive exclusives they released in 2014 when few left for 2015.

X1 cant compete either in power nor diversity of PS4s exclusives because they focused to Kinect way more than they should ... Now that Kinect is out of the picture since motion controls completely flopped when both Nintendo and MS thought that was the future because of Wiis success .. .. X1 is now left with an inferior product on same price tag ( PS4 ) to compete with ... therefore .. they lost the war already.

Nintendo should try new IPs also .. Personally thats why i prefer SONY over Nintendo. Every single generation you having some of the best AAA NEW IPs as exclusives and thats awesome imho.

@commander: Great post dude. Sincerely, I enjoyed reading it. It was a nice trip down memory lane albeit I lived through it and remember and agree with everything. Except the underdog part. The reason people were surprised about Sony's fall from the number one selling console last gen was because they weren't underdogs. You cant be an underdog, the one expected to lose or trail the competition and have many talking about how surprised they are about the sales of the Wii and 360. If Sony was the underdog, why would people be surprised when the Wii was slaughtering it in sales?

That's like making Buster Douglas a 46-1 underdog against Mike Tyson and then after Douglas KOs Tyson saying "I knew it all along". It doesn't make sense. Why would Sony be so arrogant going into last gen if they were the underdog?

No dude. Sony was not the underdog after 2 massively dominant gens. You point out the mistakes they made with the PS3, but they weren't mistakes until it was seen that they didn't produce the same sales domination.

From traditional FPS to adventure , from horror/survival to action RPG to open world adventure RPG to action/hack and slash and from simulation driving to platforming and from action/adventure shooter to JRPG . Something for all tastes. Options and more options. So why to not say PS4 will have the most diverse exclusive library once again when i already know what is gonna release soon or later ?

So do you really think that PS4 after those confirmed future exclusives ( there are way more than that ) wont have the best diversity out of all other consoles especially when it sales so good ? If they managed to do that with PS3 what makes you think wont happen with PS4 ?

No, if you asked me would I bet PS will have a bigger and more diverse line up of course I would. But that doesn't make it a fact. A fact has already, in its entirety happened. In Feb 1990 if you asked me was Tyson going to beat Douglas, I would have said look at the odds. 46-1 in favor of Tyson. And why were they so lopsided? Because of the track records. But it couldn't be called a fact until Tyson beat Douglas. And of course Tyson did not.

Like I said no matter how much in favor the odds are that PS4 will have the larger diverse library when all is said and done, it isn't a fact until all is said and done. Like when gen 9 starts.

I'll play/Persona 5 No way/ Uncharted 4 hell yeah/ LBP3 not on my worst day/ infamous I have/ Killzone I played/ Bloodborne yes/ God of war yes/ SF5 hell no/ ratchet no/Last Guardian it will have to blow my mind in order for me to/GT why when Forza rocked it/Until Dawn perhaps/Rime no. So of 14 games listed, I am interested in 50 %. What good is that big list of Diversity to me if I don't care for half of them?

Opinions, predictions no matter how favorable, and preferences are not objective facts that apply to all of us. Preferences are facts only for the person who holds them. Like, I prefer Halo to KZ. It is a fact that cainetao11 prefers Halo. It is not a fact for everyone that Halo is better than KZ because I prefer it. It is a fact that PS4 has more games with AA/AAA on metacritic than X1. But the review scores of games are not binding facts that dictate we must all like those games or agree with the scores.

I appreciate the apology on the no games stuff. I would never use that crap against any system. Its a bold faced lie and all one has to do is go to a store and see that there are games available for them all.

It seems we have a different understanding about this whole underdog concept but you're actually correct. Playstation was more of a king losing a lot of ground last gen instead of being an underdog. It just seemed that they became an underdog (to me anyway) because nintendo kind of dropped out the hardcore gaming market and because microsoft gave sony such a beating. Microsoft not only caught sony off guard with the x360 hardware and release date. They also showed that they knew their way around better when it came to console networks.

When sony had to shutdown multiplayer service for several weeks it must have been their lowest point. Not only had they made bad business decisions by making the ps3 unbalanced, too costly and too late; they also looked like an amateur when they had shutdown their psn network. At that point sony really felt like an underdog to me, because this was no longer about a standalone console in the living room. This was about a system that has to be able to function within the internet and this was completely microsofts turf. Not to mention microsoft seemed to be knowing a lot more about console hardware as well.

But a lot of companies need to have data security and they were able to do it , so why couldn't sony. I mean these sony servers that were hacked contained accout information, but the psn network was never really comprimised. Sony had enough resources to rectify this and the ps3 was still a viable machine. Now more than ever, because now it was 2011 and sony still had some tricks up their sleeve, they still had that excellent first party support and those devs gotten very good at tapping into that extra power on the ps3. With games like uncharted 3 and especially the last of us sony showed that they had the best console. That kind of lifelike animation that you saw in the last of us was simply not possible on the x360.

So you're right, they may have seemed like an underdog (to me and others) but they never really were. I just hope that the real underdog, nintendo, steps up this time, so that they can make the console wars interesting again. Well, the last two years were entertaining though, if you care more about comedy than innovation, because, to put in it your words, it's like Attila the hun dancing naked and singing 'life is beautifull' at the beginning of a major battle. That battle wast lost before it even started.

Yeah I can see how you would feel that way. I disagree with the lifelike animation not being capable on 360. There are parts of Halo Reach where the characters are talking to each other that have really good life like animation and the voice acting was spot on. Now the graphics themselves weren't as good as TLOU. Gears 3 also had some great animation, and graphics but TLOU was stronger of course.

Oh if Nintendo would just agree to compete with PS and Xbox again. Like in hardware capability and 3rd party support. If they had that along with the stellar first party games I really feel they would have a good chance to unseat PS as the world wide favorite console. Xbox will never do so imo. I have preference for Sony all the way , not in some regard , VS Nintendo and i can backup everything again if you want why i say so but thats a personal preference , if you want to discuss it im all in. And to keep it short ill say 3 words. Major exclusives lost to competition back in the day ( Final Fantasy series a small example ) , serious lack of third party support and the fact that since N64 and for every single console up to now Nintendo let their consoles go into life support TOOOOOOOOOO early. I mean ... why ?!!! Even Wii , with major sales... they let it die just like that. Bcause of those 3 things i really dislike Nintendo consoles . Handheld though is entirely different story for them. Its for exactly the opposite reasons why they are doing amazing job.

So there you have it in short why i prefer Sony consoles over Nintendos. And dont get me wrong , im renting the games i really like fom the systems but they are so few .. why to spend 600$ for a console that will become a dust collector sooner than it should like all others before it and all you like are 3-4 games max ? Renting and problem solved. Save money and space. All i like from current system are : Bayonetta 2 / Zelda / Xeno / Mario World. Thats it. I know beforehand there wont be more mario games ( official statement ) , no more Zelda , no more Xeno and no more Bayonetta. System will be in serious life support in 2016 when Sony and Ms consoles will go as hard as possible in both 1st and 3rd party titles.

Just because the majority of reviewers or people on this planet say/think Halo is better than Killzone does not make it fact. Popular opinion does not equal fact. There are things that are indisputable, like better graphics in the KZ series since the second game in the series. But overall assessment of a game is still a matter of opinion. A fact is: water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. I can say 95 degrees is better all my life but water will never boil at 95 degrees and stating it will can easily be proven wrong. Halo as a series sells more, and gets higher ratings but these are just indications of mass preference or as I said popular opinion. If a person likes KZ more he cant be proven wrong, because its subjective.

and dreamcast is a little different, dreamcast came out when there was really no competition around other than aging consoles. Sounds more like the wii u than the ps4. PS4 launched same time as xb1...and even til now xb1 is having a hard time catching up even with the price drop.

yea sony is in trouble but i think kaz is actually showing everyone some progress and he smartened up by dumping divisions that are money drains.

I only played halo reach for an hour so i really can't say. What I saw in the last of us I hadn't seen before though. Somebody else told me that about a halo game as well, so you're probably right.

Well there's a big crowd in europe as well that favors xbox, I have a tiny bit of them in my friends list. I was never really a playstation fan. I always been kind of a pc fan and used console for sports games, but i never had one until the ps3 and i only bought it late in the gen to try out some motion control games. My first console was actually an atari 2600 (yes i'm old , almost 40). I had also an snes, a genesis, an amiga cd32 but then I went all pc with windows 95, i had some pc's before that too though, the c64 and the amiga 1000.

Pc gaming became really interesting in the late nineties to me with all that 3d goodness so I had no eye for the vastly inferior playstation. While it was in many eyes a super system, and amongst consoles it was, to me and everyone that had a pc with a 3d accelerated card it was more of system for casual gaming. But like I said , to many it was a super system and while I bought an x360 instead of upgrading my old single core p4 with an geforce 3 titanium, many people were still riding that playstation train.

There were of course playstation fans that turned to the x360 back in the day, but a lot of them probably turned back with the ps4, I mean those sales have to come from somewhere. So yes, the ps4 is defenitly the most popular console today but still I know a lot of europeans (and others as well) that prefer the xbox and a lot of them haven't even bought a next gen system yet. So there's defenitely a piece of the pie there that left to be conquered. Fifa is a great example why some europeans prefer the xbox, they play ultimate team and you have certain players that are only available on xbox, legend players. A FUT fan will prefer the xbox because of that and fut is big business, they made 2.2 billion revenue last year and as you probably know, soccer or football as we like to call it, is mostly europe.

Some people defenitely want an xbox over a playstation for other reasons as well, like the controller, the community and the exclusives. Playstation players are somewhat different than xbox players (not all of them of course, but you know what i mean). The biggest problem xbox has are those hardware specs. It will loom over their head this whole gen and it will be the main reason why they'll never catch up with sony. You had the bit wars in the nineties, know you have p wars, as in resolution. Battlefield hardline is going to be 900p on the ps4 and 720p on the x1. The only way the x1 can gain more ground over the ps4 is by bringing that price down. 400 euro is still a lot of money and 300 is a lot less.

But nintendo can really score an open goal here, I mean the reason the ps4 is so succesfull is mainly because of those so called superior hardware specs. Nintendo can easily make a 500$ console now that will just double the power. I fear they're too scared to make the jump though and that's sad because if they won't it will probably bring them down. But heck there's hope, They released the super nintendo for 200$ 23 years ago and 200$ then is worht 337$ now. If they change it into 450$ with a game, they'll have a superior system and it will sell like crazy imo. All they have to do is advertise 'this one can do 1080p' and we're on.

Totally agree. This is the first gen in a long while where the power will win it. PS2 wasn't all that compared to GC and Xbox; the Wii was way less then the PS3 and 360.

Funny thing about resolution: a friend of mine is retired Postal service, has an amazing rig that I don't think I would sink that much money into if I could. He has 4k gaming going on in his place, so a few of us went over there. It is absolutely stunning the first time you see it. He was playing some RTS I believe. But somehow, against all odds I was able to go and still enjoy playing 360, X1, and PS4 when I left. This obsession with resolution is ridiculous imo. Its totally neglecting the primary factor that keeps me gaming: is the game fun or not? If its fun, i'll play in SD. Look how long gamers like us were playing in SD.

It's pretty shitty that this console is the one that is getting the come back.. They stripped away numerous features, took away backwards compatability, and actually promoted the idea of slightly "upgrading" games that are a year or two old and reselling for almost full retail.. They then made design decisions (like charging for psn) that went against why many people loved the PS3..

Well i gotta say , gameplay beats resolution and detail settings , but good gameplay with high resolution and high detail settings beats good gameplay with low resolution and detail settings. It would be a hard time for me going back to sd though allthough I went from 1024 x768 to a 480p tv (which is 640 x480, and in between that you had 800 x 600 as well). This happened when I bought my first x360 and I still had a normal tv back in 2006-2007. I was playing on 1024x768 on my p4/geforce 3 ti but I didn't mind playing on 480p on a tube since I could run next gen games like king kong, oblvion, bioshock, dead space, fallout 3 , fable 2 and so on.

Back in 2010 I bought a new pc then , a i5-530 with a hd 5770 and I had a monitor that could support 1280x 1024. That was a major improvement over the x360 and I could finally play crysis 1 on high settings. I actually waited to played that game because it actually fried my my old p4, which I overclocked to run crysis, even upgraded the video card to a gt 7600 but the pc simply shutdown after playing a halfhour on low detail settings. So crysis and crysis warhead were on hold for a long time.

I was still using the x360 for fight games, like mortal kombat 9 but when I heard of game dark souls, that was a console exclusive, i actually bought a hdtv and since then I wouldn't be able to go back to sd though. Dark souls was a great game but every chance I got i went to my pc, hooked it up to my hdtv and played games on that, the graphic difference was just too big. I did numerous upgrades/changes since 2010 but there's something about the consoles that you just can't find on the pc.

And that's the community and party chat. Everyone is on the same platform and making new friends through voice chat is just way easier on the x360/x1. That's something the pc just doesn't have, for starters not everyone on the pc has a mic while the console comes with one, so everyone has one. Doing voice chat with multiple people is as easy as pressing two buttons, while on the pc you have different issues. Some people are on steam, some on origin, some on a specific game-platform. Voice chat goes through the speakers on steam while it is splitted from the audio on xbox.

All this little things make the x360/x1 feel more social and for that I actually leave the pc for what it is. I'm not saying i'm not going to use my system for the next gta, elders scrolls or fallout but epic single player games are rare. I will defenitely use it for vr though. I'm just glad I can afford both systems, because at this time I wouldn't be able to choose, while this was a lot easier in the past, then it was simply pc.

Couldn't care less about playstation though, their exclusives can't turn me over. Well, bloodborne might though, but then I have to cough up another 400$... and with vr coming up I try to keep the money in the pocket because this will be my next buy for sure. It's not because I can afford a console and a pc, that I can afford a lot more lol

My biggest problem with getting older is staying active and this is just godsend for me. It's a pity it takes so damn long but we finally have a release date for a vr headset (valve). I said I'm almost 40, but i stillhave some time though, I'm 37,5 now but another 10 years like this and I die of heart attack. Gaming is just too much fun for me, while fitness is a nightmare (too boring), but a person is not made for sitting down all the time.

We are brothers I'll tell you that. By no means do I mean I would prefer SD, or wouldn't recognize the detractions but when I was playing on 360/ps3 on an HDTV in 2008 a girl I was dating wanted a Wii. I played SMG and it was SD and it didn't matter at all. Game was amazing. If I was told by God "no more hdtv for you" I would still play video games on an SDTV. I like playing, period.

I guess my point with the resolution was after seeing something in person that I don't have, cant afford I am not all bummed out that I have to go back to my 720p to 1080p gaming. Its not a deal breaker for me. Some people here claim they will not buy a game unless its 1080p. As if they can really tell there is a huge difference from upscaled 1080p to 1080p. I don't buy it and wish I could set up the experiment to call them out on it. And why put a limitation on the fun you may have with something? Its like saying "I wont date girls that aren't super model pretty". Your missing out on some cute women who are a lot of fun to hang around with.

On fitness I am with you. I got home from the service in jan 2014 and since have gained 60 lbs. I need to get back in shape.
