Seriously looking at Alienware PCs make me vomit

Lets be honest PC gamers/Hermits the majority of potential consumers for PC gaming don't want to build a PC themselves or learn how to.

These companies are ridiculously are making gaming PCs more expensive then they should. The only people that would actually put money into them are those with a highly disposable income, don't know how to build a PC and don't want to (Majority of consumers). They over kill on the PCs equipment/add ons and specifications such as the CPUs, RAM, HDD, liquid cooling for **** and giggles, etc etc etc. And guess what when it comes to the GPU they half ass it!!! Seriously the most important part of a GAMING PC and they half ass it!!!. 1.4k builds and up using things like a HD 6870 or a GT545. Most people who would actually invest that much into a gaming pc are smart enough to build it themselves for like more then half the price

When they show a commercial on TV they'll get peoples attention and then it turns them off son as they see the price.

With the economy being in a reccession (although people seem to have money to blow instantly on every new ipad/ipod coming out). Not many people are going to fork over money for Gaming PCs more expensive then they should be.

These companies should be more realistic, Liquid cooling, SSD drives/ultra large HDDs, 20000GBs of RAM and overpowered CPUs are not needed. Just be realistic make a nicely made air cooled PC with a decent CPU and a good GPU along with a 500/320gb HDD, 4gb RAM (no game actually utilizes more then 4gbs of RAM), a fairly made Motherboard with no excessive add ons. Alienware and other companies should do this or otherwise they'll loose to the cheap AMD APU PCs.

Alienware and all of the "Gaming Rig" companies sicken me. We PC gamers should almost band together and form our own start up company that builds gaming rigs at fair prices. Still make profit but not rip the consumers off.

Alienware = overrated/overpriced s**t.

The image they sending accross (or at least what I'm picking up) is that PC gaming is for elitists. Which to be honest, is what most PC gamers I've met act like anyway. No offense.

Alienware is for suckers who have too muchmoney and too little sense.

Apparently this kind of person is still around in sufficient numbers to sustain Alienware.

I'm sorry, but if somebody is dumb enough not to realize Alienware's aren't the only PCs avaible then he shouldn't be really using a PC in the first place.

Just like people who think Monster Trucks are the only cars avaible shold never have gotten their drivers license.

The image they're trying to create is the only reason why they are making a profit, trying to convince stupid people to buy overpriced goods. That, and those who are sponsored by them. You don't have to buy them, but it's a luxury brand. You get what you pay for, a very nice PC case.

Ads on dell brochures dont hurt either. Imagine them selling just one is probably a few benjamins for them already.

Alienware isnt a household brands, never everybody nows about it, but enough for wannabe d-bags with too much money than sense or brain to build their own thus saving 1/2 or more.

Alienware may be the worst offender but they hardly aren't the only one, all computers sold at retailers can be constured as over priced when compared to custom built rigs of the same contents, that's just how it is.

That being said I haven't built my own computer, but I "made" a custom one over at Ibuypower, seems to be fairly priced to me, at least with the custom configurator.

Maybe consumers shouldn't be lazy and maybe... "shop around"? You don't see people on a budget when buying clothes instantly going to Dolce and Gabanna or Armani, do you?

They're just giving consumers what they want. If people don't want liquid-cooled Alienware PC's with 2 GTX 580's, then they don't have to buy them.

Well uninformed people see these prices and say things like "I'm not going to spend $2000 on a PC just to play game with slightly better graphics"

Nothing wrong with Alienware stuff... if you are rich and lazy I guess.

Alienware stuff is expensive as hell, but I don't think people's image of gaming PC's would change. Even if you built that $2000 PC yourself, it would still be over $1000 with what it contains (dual 6870's, and all the other stuff), and if you want the best price you'd have to build it yourself. Plus building a PC isn't something you just go out and "do" instantly, like picking out a console or a prebuilt one.

You have to know where everything goes, you have to know which parts are compatible (a card that uses 2 slots won't go on a motherboard with no more room but a 1 slot card), you have to know which parts are the best bang for your buck (deciding whether to SLI cheaper cards or get a single good card), and in the end the PC community isn't the best community.

You guys on SW might not know this, but they pretty much have their own SW going on, like a Hermit civil war. Go ask what GPU you should buy on a forum and if you're lucky (or unlucky) you'll be witness to a company war between Nvidia fanboys, AMD fanboys and the occasional Intel fanboy arguing about how wrong they all are in the parts they choose to help you with, while everyone's changing standards mean you could be offered a 280 to game cheaper at decent settings, and someone else will laugh at you when you have them proofread your list and make it pricier (this all might be a TAD exaggerated, but it was my experience my first time building a PC).

But yeah, getting into PC gaming with Alienware is pricey but expensive. If you want to save cash, you need time, and a lot of people don't have time, though I guess time is money, so either way you have to make a significant investment. Sadly that's the image, game with pretty games and some freedom and customization, but at quite a cost. But its one I made, and I think there are a few rare places in the world that are actually helpful and not money hungry, but good job finding one of those places hidden behind a huge CompUSA.

Forget Alienware. Overpriced stuff for people with too much money. But... am I reading this above pic right? GT 520? HD 6450? HUH?? These are okay-ish low end stuff, but for dedicated "gaming PC"s? WHAT? And at these prices?

Completely agree. I just built the computer in my sig. In total, it was $736 for everything with shipping. I got to build it, which was fun, and every component is from a reputable and reliable brand. In order to get a comparable Alienware, it's double the price for a weaker GPU and cheap, low quality components.

That's the buyer's perogative how they want to spend their money. I once had a friend back in the Evercrack Era who already had a decent Dell PC. Yet, he ordered a PC apiece from Dell and Alienware (spent $10k total in 10 minutes) just so he can play 3 characters in Evercrack. I just shook my head. But, it's his money.

I can't see myself doing that though. Spend $10k on women? Sure.

I love Alienware laptops design and Im going to buy one just for that (M14x), but it really hurts me that they are pretending to be high-end gaming rigs and they dont have good enough GPUs. The M14x has GT 555M which is decent but there are cheaper gaming laptops (Asus, MSI) that have GTX 560M thats almost twice as powerful.

But if I didnt want a laptop, I would build my own PC. Its not very complicated, I remember building my first PC when I was 15 (Intel Pentium 3 500 MHz, GeForce 256 with 32 MB VRAM and 256 MB RAM - cutting edge :D )

These guys want to make a buck. They don't want to sell PCs at a lower price. That's for everyone that doesn't want their stuff to figure out on their own. Luckily we have you intelligent people to help the peasants out. :D

You are either super rich, or totally ok with spending money on something you can get free... if you know how ;).

Though I guess you could get a gaming PC totally free if you were willing to rob a truck full of gaming PC's... so, I'm not sure what the point of this story is.

To put it into perspective I built a computer back in early August for about 1080USD which contained. i5 2500k (OCed to 4.4ghz) Noctua NH-D14 cpu heatsink (one of the best air cooling heatsinks) 8 gigs of Ripjaws 1600mhz RAM 1TB x2 samsung spinpoint f3 hard drives (in RAID 0) Storm Enforcer computer case XIGMATEK ACXTNRP-PC702 (700 watt power supply) Asrock P67 Pro3 B3 motherboard ASUS GTX 570 Direct CU ii (OCed to 950mhz core clock) This PC would have those Alienware PCs for lunch. Heck the PC I built back in 2007 for around 700USD with an 8800gt could beat those PCs that use a lousy GT520

i have a alienware laptop and its the best laptop i ever had, if i buy a new one it will be another alien for sure, of course there is a high margin on it cause its a premium product , but the target customer wants to have something exclusive that not everyone has (can afford) , this applies to most premium products, you could also argue why someone is wasting money on a collectors edition if he can play the same game with the regular one

I dont think he is talking about Laptops, since those are kinda in a different category. I dont know much about them, but I know its not like a desktop where you can just order parts and throw it together :P. So I think an Alienware Laptop is not a terrible idea, but a desktop is. Any branded desktop is.

but not eveyrone can build and repair their own PC , also if you buy a alienware you get a next business day on site service if anything breaks , some maybe could but dont want to waste the time , of course it's more expensive but for some it doesnt matter and the saved time makes it worth , it's similar with tuned cars you can either invest your own time and save money (assuiming you have the needed skill) but if you let professionals do the same job it will cost much more

but not eveyrone can build and repair their own PC , also if you buy a alienware you get a next business day on site service if anything breaks , some maybe could but dont want to waste the time , of course it's more expensive but for some it doesnt matter and the saved time makes it worth , it's similar with tuned cars you can either invest your own time and save money (assuiming you have the needed skill) but if you let professionals do the same job it will cost much more

A car is a lot more complicated than building a computer and maintaining it. And a car requires some special tools to do heavy maintenance while I only require a screw driver and google search for any maintenance on my computer.

i agree , hence the term "similar" , i was referring more to the "do it yourself" vs. buying a finished product cost difference than the technical side of the build process

PC gaming doesn't only have an image problem, it also has a reality problem.

Main problem is lack of standards, you have card makers pumping out bleeding edge hardware, creating a rift between rich gamers who run everything on max in 60 frames, vs late adopters who can barely even run the game because they're sporting a 3 year old card.

Lately it has been getting better but that is only because the PC market has been shrinking.

If people start flooding back to PC, they will start with their yearly upgrade Crysis crap again.

One of the things that annoy me is I buy something for $150 on Newegg and 2 years later it can't run anything smoothly. So I have to keep dumping my loot into Nvidia for the privilege of playing games.

People never talk about how Vista gutted PC gaming, people having to throw away parts because Vista won't support it.

They also never talk about how GPU makers gut PC gaming with their bleeding edge standards, "sorry you need shader version 3 to run this game."

During the middle of this hardware loot craze, console makers swooped in and ate all their lunches.

What PC gaming needs most of all is what it will never have; sanity, standards and common-sense.

Alienware may be the worst offender but they hardly aren't the only one, all computers sold at retailers can be constured as over priced when compared to custom built rigs of the same contents, that's just how it is.

This, They arent any more special than any other pre-built system.
