Hard to say. The general consensus is they have set the standard for console online, but other than that I can't think if a single innovation besides achievements and milking customers.darkspineslayerThey keep Sony on their toes, I'd say that's reason enough.

A fair point. Their competition is what pulled Sony's head from its ass and got the online and price up to snuff.

But think of how drastically different the console landscape has become after the introduction of XBL.
Few innovations (within the console industry) have been on the level of Xbox Live.
Of course we do. Could you imagine how horrible online gaming would be if MS didn't push sony to improve PSN? How much would it suck to still get netflix through the mail instead of being able to watch it on my Tv? It doesn't matter if fanboys want to admit it or not but MS had done a lot of good to push gaming forward with the Xbox and 360.mems_1224
Exactly...
Now, at this point, I'd say Sony mostly caught up to XBL, so Gold fees are becoming an unnecessary annoyance, but in the previous years, from what I gathered, PSN sucked, plain and simple, and XBL was well worth the price as MS offered a much higher quality in on-line experience than Sony...
Fanboys be cried, but MS played a huge part in rising the standards of console on-line gaming, and making it popular. If that isn't a worthwhile contribution to the industry, then I really don't know what is...
We need them for competition. Without Microsoft Sony got arrogant and lazy, when the 360 took a chunk of Playstations marketshare away from them Sony woke up and came back better than ever.
Grudgingly yes.
I don't like XBL fee and ads and Kinect but without MS all we would have is schitty PS3 and schitty Wii and their schitty movie exclusives and schitty Mario every 5 minutes.
Without MS, how much would the PS3 cost? How much would the PS4 cost? Competition is a good thing.fernandmondego_
Then Cows have to work a second or third job to pay for their beloved toys...
valve is all we need.... ANYWAYS. microsoft is needed. WHY would you as a gamer want a game company go out of business that rivals other game company's by encouraging the other to make bigger and better things? no competition = no progress or very little to make ppl shut up and keep buyingk2theswissnintendo encouraged microsoft to sell out on the people who bought xbox in 2001. kinect was a big slap in the face to those people.
Microsoft and their godbox is the thing that makes calves post pictures of themselves kissing their "girlfriends" and get mad when something bad happens to them, so yes they are needed for the comedy and the innovation (unlike Sony who wants to rip off Nintendo and Microsoft).
M$ will end up making the industry worse. They're the worst competitor to have on such an industry. They introduce nothing but shady tactics and bad strategies for consumers. They built their company based on that and FUD, quality is second to them.kuraimen
Someone's butthurt today
Did mommy not get you a PS3 for your birthday?

I think we just need Microsoft, Sony and Nintnedo feel obsolete and tired these days
Besides 3DS with Bravely Default and Layton and the rare amazing game like Demons Souls, which is now on xbox 360 in Dark Souls anyway
Even the top JRPGs like Lost Odyssey were on 360 this time
Lol @ people claiming that the industry wouldn't be as good without M$. The industry was fine without them and would've continue being fine without them. Of course no one would've introduced crap like charging for online.kuraimenxbox live was ahead of it's time. broadband only no dial up. ps2 online had dial up

Yeah... there'd be no on-line to charge for!
If we had only the PS3 and Wii, console on-line would be abysmal...
Do we need them? No. However, they have brought in good competition, and I'd say the PS3 is better because of it. I prefer the PS3 over the 360, but competition is always a good thing. PSN wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't for Microsoft.
That being said, I still don't like the way MS does business. Charging for online while everyone else pays absolutely nothing for the same experience, placing ads all over the dashboard on top of charging you for online, dropping the emphasis on core games and focusing on Kinect...at least they started out the gen really well though.
