how much they need to lose in this industry before they call it quits?

I understand they are trying hard and everything, with lots of amazing games and such.

But it seems the gaming media and the majority of gamers are extremely loyal to the PS and Nintendo brands.

They seemed to be wowed by the smallest things Sony or Nintendo announce, yet no matter how big AAA franchises comes to X360, it's just "not appealing".

So do you think there is a possiblity that MS calls it quits and focus on publishing PC games instead?

I mean, if you were a decision maker at Microsoft, what would you advice the company to do after all these years of losses and after you just learned your company has to lose another 1 Billion due to a design flaw in your X360 product?

Bearing in mind of course, that you also assessing how forgiving and loyal the industry to your competitors (especially outside US) but not to your company.

So what would be your realistic advice to Microsoft regarding continueing in this industry?

I have no remorse for M$. They came in thinking "money". They had no vision on where they wanted to take gaming. Bill Gates said it himself that the Xbox was his "side project". Tell me does that sound like they care? I mostly feel sorry for people who went in to actually support such a company like M$. it was like the blind leading the blind. My advice would to Pack up and leave. Let comapnys like Apple handle the 3rd slot for the gaming division.

I think Microsoft could continue taking hits if they wanted. They are (I think) the most profitable company in the world. Microsoft could almost outbid the US government. I'd say Microsoft would wait until the next generation to drop out, but I don't see that happening.

Regardless of how well the Wii is doing (I own one) MS has only been outsold by 100,000 in the US since the Wii launch, I don't see how MS are doing too badly.

They seem pretty focused on trying to integrate the PC and console communities atm so I don't think they'll drop the Xbox project that soon.

HAHA ! Sony would wish, MS is doing to well simply slaughtering there #1 enemy Sony, wich was obviously there plan seeing HD-TV, taking ps3 exclusives and more. MS would be insane to stop now, there big investation has just begun. And sofar there pretty good for gamers, except for the stupid mappacks and a ton of other poop on Marketplace that costs money, also tomuch.

No, let companies like Konami, Capcom, or SEGA-Sammy handle the 3rd slot. Let's have a GAMING company do this since they actually somewhat care about gaming *if gaming fails they fail* and always make their best games at that time and create their games instead of buying them. But besides that I agree 100%.

I know what you mean but let's be honest what American developer/publisher is good enough to launch a system? I mean Vivendi possibly could but PC gamers wouldn't want a system dumbing down PC games to be replaced by another. Also America dominates many markets, why not let the Japanese have one? :P I meanyou could say the same about how America has a monoploy on the PC market. ;)

Anyway seriously imagine a Konami console with great first party support and strong ties with Capcom and SEGA. :drools:

see, that's a very good example on the "anything but Microsoft" type of people the industry is filled with (especially outside US).

So it's really an uphill for Microsoft to convince people like him how important Microsoft to the gaming industry compared to Apple (let alone say Sony).

Microsoft sees videogames asa huge market for them when they start making money next year and pull away from Sony. They have hardware that is a gateway for other publishers where they make royalties, and withXBL where they have their own network of new content, including movies and TV. They see this as not trying to get a toe hold in an industry but getting a toe hold in a new entertainment medium.

Why in the hell would Microsoft "pull the plug" on the Xbox brand? I mean, sure, I'm pretty much done with them, but to say they're failing is just...yeah.

Not a Chance. They have money to burn. And their console is hit with the RROD, but they put their hands up and arepayin a 1billion price for it. Not to mention they joining Live with PC users. I'll be happy with my 360 and Wii, and I can use my Gamer tag on my PC to. Its all win. No fancy "home(less)" gimmick, no forcing of HD optical format, just hardcore gaming. And hardcore gaming is where it all started. The next gen will see them get everything right. They were first in and will be first out, but first out with a new entry into the next gen. They have the money to make their next console better in every way. By the time developers figure out the cell, there willl be something better. Blu ray in the PS3 at 2x Read Speed? Pah, they will better that too. So Sony, its like this - ya messed up, your price drop doesn't cover the fact your console is still out performed by (older) technology, and you sacked Ken 3 years too late! (for the record, i owned PS1 and PS2), but could see the grave PS3 had already Dug.

i think Microsoft is so heavily invested into the market they cant turn back now plus 1-2 billion dollars isn't that much money when your total revenue for the year is 50 billion(got my numbers from business week the head story was like the top tech players or something were they listed the major tech players and how much they take in). Plus i mean what is the alternative do what sega did and make games for the PS3 and Wii? i highly doubt after Microsoft game studios bought so many game developers(Especially Rare) that they can just walk away.

plus i think Microsoft is in the console business to diversify their products(see zune, surface etc..) if they back out what are they going to say "we cant do anything besides windows? all of the last 10 years to expand our products is shot? " i really cant see that happening. This is a long term Microsoft plan to expand their company into other areas to continue to grow if it takes 10-15 years more I think they will stick with it personally.

Absolutely not. The codenamed "Xbox 720" is already in development at ATI/AMD in terms of the video card. In fact, the specifics are unknown to me, but the next generation Xbox will be exactly like this one's in terms of architecture, except scaled up from what I hear, making full BC a reality. At least on paper.

If that is going to happen, it won't be until after their next console. Microsoft knew they were going to take losses coming into the industry, so they're not suprised. They had a 3 console strategy from the start.

1. XBOX: Establish a brand name and gain a smallpiece of marketshare. Check

2. XBOX 360: Strengthen brand name recognition, secure more 3rd party exclusives, and increase marketshare. Check

3. XBOX ?: Put the video game industry in a chokehold. We'll see

MS will not pull the plug. They want it to succeed and they want a piece of the gaming indutry revenue. They have hopefully fixed the issues with the console and they have tremendous 3rd party support and a lot of solid games in the works. They won't pull out with how well it is doing. They have the money so 1 billion to address fixing the consoles won't kill them. And i would bet the next xbox is in the works for their next gen xbox line in probably 3-4 years time

There is no way Microsoft will pull the Xbox brand. It is by far their most successful consumer brand (aside from Windows.)

This does not mean they won't stop making Xbox consoles. You never know about that. But no matter what happens, the Xbox brand will continue.

Shungo wtf are you talking about? People supported MS because it bought us gamers good games. You think people would be buying the consoles if they didn't? If you can't see how the xbox has contributed to the video game industry then I have to say you're the one who is blind.

Thats a well thought opinion. I was just thinking same thing about sony, should just concerntrate on cell phones. Instead they are pushing Blu ray and Cell into everthing. Maybe SonyPictures will make a film about them too. Say "Crouching Cell, hidden costs" and "house of the flying blu ray disks", or"The last playstation", maybe even "curse of theswollen gaystation". But to be fair, i think Nintendo should do afilm too, "crunching numbers, hire accountants", "curse of the consumer demand", "house of the gold leaf wallpaper".Bottom line M$ and Ninty own this Gen, and unless Sony can cure diseases with thier home super computer and 4D graphics, i cant see them in the next gen

I believe it's the next-next-gen where MS will finally start seeing a huge return on this investment.

You call the Xbox 360 superior hardware? You can't be serious. Microsoft has unleashed the most unreliable console ever produced and you call it, "superior"?

Wow.

yeah losing 1.5 billion dollars..and not makin a penny is winning..lol...and the xbox was dead last gen .ps2 murder it.. whats goin to bite microsoft in the butt is the million of defective hardware out there...ill be playin my ps3 game while lemming is repairing their 360 for the 10th times..

last gen ps2 won because it came out much earlier and had a pre installed userbase... the xbox had superiour hardware and good games but the ps2 outsold it... so this gen time is to repeat itslef with the superiour hardware ps3 losing how xbox lost last gen.... time is repeating itself in microsofts favor

You call the Xbox 360 superior hardware? You can't be serious. Microsoft has unleashed the most unreliable console ever produced and you call it, "superior"?

Wow.

Read his post again....slowly.

Also, I want proof that the 360 is more unreliable than the PS2.

[QUOTE="IbukiNinja"]I have no remorse for M$. Let comapnys like Apple handle the 3rd slot for the gaming division.Blackbond

Shungo wtf are you talking about? People supported MS because it bought us gamers good games. You think people would be buying the consoles if they didn't? If you can't see how the xbox has contributed to the video game industry then I have to say you're the one who is blind.

I agree with that, I mean at least Microsoft didn't stop developers from making traditional games when their console launched *SONY*

Sorry to tell you, but every company is in it for the money. All three of the console companies don't give a rats ass about us just as long as we keep buying their stuff. Oh sure, it may seem like they care, but that's their public face. I'm sure all they see is our wallets, nothing more.

It's shungokustasu, you know how he thinks. Sony is in this race to cure cancer, stop AIDS, and establish world peace. Whilst Microsoft is in it to kill puppies, mutilate babies, etc.

Unfortunately for all gamers, Microsoft will not pull the plug on the Xbox. They have a long term agenda of trying to control the entire gaming and home entertainment industry. Whether or not they succeed still remains to be seen.

But because of a pathetic andleaderless elected US government, which fails to represent the people of the US.A government whose purposehas been altered andbought out by special interests and corporate greed, has allowed Microsoft's illegal business practices to continue unchecked. Microsofts vastreservoir of cash has allowed them to buy out developers, asthey slowly subvert the gaming industry into their strategy of complete market control. There will be no free market and competition. Gaming will be more expensive with less innovation.

Yeah like how Sony is trying to control the HD-Format market by forcing you into buying Blu-Ray thus making a $600 machine. At least MS makes gaming affordable you have to pay extra just for Sony's expense at winning a format war. Unfortunately for all games *cough* I mean Microsoft haters MS gets quality games on its platform.
