Does any console game look even half as good as the best looking PC games?

Yeah, peopel who go out, buy the new console when it releases for $4-500, then go and buy a nice HDTV, pay $10 more per game, and pay for online features DEFINITELY don't have the money for an $800 PC with cheaper games and free online.

lowe0

Sweet. So that's the end of the "console gamers are poor" argument, then?

Most of them are, its the parents that pay for the stuff :P

One's parents are equally able to pay for a PC gamer's PC, then. So, you're not able to draw any conclusion about one's personal wealth from their choice of gaming platform.

Well no. Consoles rarely render games in 1080p natively, and after playing lots n' lots of BF3 at 1080p with all the whizz bang visuals up, and a variety of other games it's really something else. Visuals however has mass appeal, that's why they're touted in cinema and in games, and why the subject of graphics will always have fanboys fuming.

When it comes to texture and LOD consoles cant even come close to games that requires more video memory. Prime examples are games that make use of Pc hardware. Such as Metro 2033 has textures that are 9x more detailed what what the consoles can even use because of the lack of memory. Most of console screenshots that are posted on the net are bullshots, doctored and shots that have scaled down to hide the flaws.

[QUOTE="Gue1"]

but those Uncharted screens look amazing!

And why is that jaggies are only visible on the screenshots you guys post? When I play the game I never notice these many jaggies and you can't even see them on the videos either.

Pray_to_me

Because they are streching and skewing the images to fit into a gamespot comment box and then comparing it to unplayable mods and tech demos. In fact it's sort of pathetic that the Hermits are still nut hugging Crysis even though the game is on consoles they need to get over it.

Icenhancer isn't unplayable and the Titanic level isn't unplayable. And the Uncharted screens posted are legit screens of what the game looks like in its native 720p res, not small-res bullshots.

Pray is an attention broad. You guys disappoint the PC master god realm with your allergic to facts as much as the fact when Pray's mom found out she had a son because of her husbands allergic to condoms.

This is only PC's second current leading graphical accelerator 4000MB

I'm 100% possitive that if you showed someone who didn't care about antialiasing or texture filtering that scene from God Of War 3, and showed them a scene from Metro 2033, they'd be more impressed with God Of War 3 ;)

Yes. I own Metro 2033 on PC. It's an amazing game and looks amazing, but it doesn't have those spectacular scenes that God Of War and Uncharted have. Graphics are more than just texture quality to me :P

Too bad the crysis pic you picked is modded and can not be played at a stable framerate there for who gives a **** about graphics if you cant play it ? :O

Maneil99

Yes it can.. and graphical mods tap into the hardware's potential, otherwise what the f*k of a point does thread have? The best of PC gaming comes from heavily modded games, because those actually show what a gaming rig. is capable of.

The potential of the highest gaming rig. (in the limits of what a consumer could buy) are infinitely more advanced compared to the ancient hardware found in a console. As i said before, we can see glimpes of that with heavily modded games like GTA IV and Crysis 1&2. Bring into the disscusion 2500x1600 rez., and it's case closed.

Though it is a shame that, in recent times, there has ben no game built from scratch, and optimized to take full potential of the highest level of a gaming rig. It's completely understandable why, but still, a shame.

Metro is a first person horror game, it's not supposed to be in yer face action :| All I seen in that Uncharted train video was : 1. NO shadows on 80% of the objects, grass/tree's on the side were completely without shadows. 2. Everything was repeated, must of used the same tree/grass models a million times, pretty much people picked on Crysis for repeating a few models. 3. The foliage was a horrible bright green that was unrealistic. 4. Why was all the foliage the exact same god damn shade of bright green? 5. Game overall looked bland. 6. Yes you was on a moving on a moving train and it looked exciting but it looked boring, too much time jumping around instead of shooting. Shall I tell you the first thing everyone that see's games on my PC always comment on? They INSTANTLY notice just how much sharper and clearer everything looks, after they've finished they then comment on how awesome and smooth it all looks.

[QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"]This is why console games should have stable resolutions, stable frames, fun games, and innovation in new ways to play. Graphics pushing on consoles is dumb imo. You are killing the game by trying to make the hardware push itself to the limits. We get ugly looking textures, horrible frames, limited freedom, and crap innovation.MrJack3690

Agreed.

Im not sure why hermits get so butt hurt when a console game looks good are when a console is suppsoed to be powerful, but relying on gimmicks will kill the industry. If the definition of innovative is what Nintendo did with the Wii and everyone followed it would ruin the industry. Also a large portion of these great looking pc games would never get made because they would have to be made exclusively for the platform and devs simlply are not going to take that risk . The next consoles need to be at least DX11 and 1080p capable or pc gaming will suffer as well.

Check the charts and you'll see the opposite, PC gaming is growing again and growing quite well. Next set of consoles being DX11 is a given and 1080p depends if Sont and MS make 1080p mandatory. 720 will still be standard next gen imo as it meens there's more power for making prettier pixels.

Then maybe you can point them out? There's so many objects that should be casting/receiving shadows that just aren't.. Very basic lighting and shows..

That Uncharted scene still looks better. How the enviroment changes, the animations, the combat inside and outside the cabs, it looks better. The way the scene was created and plays out looks more impressive. But Crysis has higher res foilage! It doesn't matter if it still looks worse.

How anyone can say that Crysis scene looks better than the Uncharted 2 scene is mindboggling

Lmao...try again... Crysis has higher res texture, effects, particle, lighting...infact better EVERYTHING... And you're comparing a story driven on the rails third person shooter to a sand box sci-fi FPS? Oh dear..... Even playing Crysis today, years after it's release every play through is still completely different to last and massively varied. The same can't be said for uncharted.

When you consider that the Uncharted scene is structured so that the player is confined to a small, heavily linear level that utilizes smoke and mirrors to achieve its appearance, the amazement dissipates. Crysis is a non-linear open-ended shooter, yet no compensations have been made with regards to detail. Imagine if Uncharted was an open-ended game: it would look much worse. The visuals you see in Uncharted are only what the developers want you to see.

The animations, set piece, art, and just how the scene plays out, look how Drake runs alongside the Jeep.

Those two videos you posted are biased, and besides that, the Uncharted one looked bad if i'm gonna compare it to the little fun i had modding games. But those are youtube videos, it doesn't 100% represent how the games look.

Like I said, if you're okay with having smoke and mirrors disguise visual inadequacies, and if you're okay with having a game that plays out more like a movie where multiple playthroughs result in the exact same visual experience, good for you.

Show me a PC game that looks more impressive. :) Show me a scene from The Witcher 2 that looks as impressive as that. I don't care if a game was using "Smoke and mirrors" if it looks that incredible.

I'm lazy as f*k, and even if i were to install the game, make a couple of gifs/screens/videos of the most impressive scenes, you would brush them off (your entire argument is based around your personal appeal of visuals, which are subject to biases that you have already made painfully obvious).

So give me 5 bucks (trough paypal), and maybe i will.

Uncharted funnels you along to setpiece after setpiece: Naughty Dog's intention is to give you movie-like cinematic levels rather than deliver open-ended, detailed, interactive environments.

[QUOTE="mrfrosty151986"][QUOTE="Chris_Williams"] that looks like crapgpuking
Show me better.... And not just some repeated texture with a lazy detail map giving the false impression of 'detail' That texture uses parrallex occlusion mapping which consoles just flat out do not have the power to do on modern games.

POM is UE3 level tech and routinely used in console games such as Gears, Killzone, god of war 3 and uncharted, nothing to brag about son. It's just a matter of setting the height value which seems to be on high in that crysis shot. If you wanna brag about PC tech might as well try tessellation.

Wow, really? The floor is completely flat in this shot of Killzone. Who are you trying to fool?

There is no impression of height vs texture at all in this picture.

The Crysis Warhead train level was simply brilliant. If you didn't play it, and just know about it from this video, you would think it's a generic onrails sequence. It isn't. You can get out of the train at *anytime*, explore the surroundings, get on a jeep, drive to the train and get back in. You're free to approach it how you see fit. It puts any other train level I've ever played to shame, and not only because of the graphics.

I honestly don't see what'a so great about this scene. Yeah it looks cool, but that's about it. It's also a complete ripoff of The Living Daylights, see herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arrLqolGkQg

That Battlefield 3 video . You talk about smoke and mirrors yet you post a video where it's completely scripted with absolutely no player control. Atleast Uncharted has you controlling Drake during the set pieces.

And Witcher 2 video, this looks as good in my opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f4YJV9U_RA

The Crysis Warhead train scene doesn't look that impressive. You shoot some jeeps, look at the same banana plants copy and pasted, jump of the train to pull a switch, fight some more jeeps, go past a frozen bit of island, then inside a swamp. Then you watch a terrible, jerky cutscene with terrible animations and awful voice acting.
