Does any console game look even half as good as the best looking PC games?

Crysis+Warhead have plenty of variety.

Stalkerfieldsis

No they don't. You're staring at the same textures again and again and again. Nothing stands out, because it all looks the same.

This is variety. All these screenshots are from 15 minutes of gameplay.

You can not argue Rage has more variety then crysis. Crysis is limited to one Island however the switch to Frozen is a big difference as is the alien ship but thats it. Crysis is like this

70% Forest/jungle

10% Ice forest

5% Alien Ship

5% Land Carrier

10% beach

Crysis Warhead:

55% Junlge

20% Ice

10% Mines

15% Air Field

The Crysis Warhead train scene doesn't look that impressive. You shoot some jeeps, look at the same banana plants copy and pasted, jump of the train to pull a switch, fight some more jeeps, go past a frozen bit of island, then inside a swamp. Then you watch a terrible, jerky cutscene with terrible animations and awful voice acting.

Peredith

Actually, you shoot some jeeps and trucks, you fight it out with KPA so you can load up on ammo, you attempt to pull a switch (actually there is none left), you take on another train which have KPA aboard, manning some chainguns, you take on a KPA helicopter gunship, then you enter the swamp and shoot it out with aliens (both flying and ground huggers), and then you watch the cutscene.

If I recall Crysis terrain correctly, there's:

1. Contact and Recovery - Coastal areas. Recovery transitions from coastal terrain to forest towards the end.

2. Relic - Forest. Relic has mostly deep forest with hills and ravines. Add dusk, night, and fog (in the cemetery).

3. Assault - Transitions back to coastal areas with more urban features (the port).

4. Onslaught - Mostly highlands marked by grassy plains with lots of hills and ridges plus little clumps of forest.

5. Awakening - Mostly highlands transitioning to man-made areas such as the open-pit mine.

6. Core - Alien territory inside the mountain marked by blue terrain.

7. Paradise Lost - Mountainous with ice and snow.

8. Exodus - Continued mountainous with transition from ice/snow back to forests.

9. Ascension - Atmospheric flight.

10. Reckoning - Aircraft carrier.

First time I saw this Peredith dude conveniently skip a comment, thought it was an innocent overlook. Then there was like several overlooks in succession. Just to be on the safe side, I once baited him with a dumbass argument, and whaddya know, kid finally replied to me after all those times ignoring me.

If you got a good argument, don't expect a reply from him. But reply anyway, coz your argument is good, then there'll be a massive archive of the dude hilariously being selective in his discussions.

[QUOTE="mrfrosty151986"] Lmaoo... You're so deluded it's funny... Crysis is set on a tropical island so of course you're going to get the same plant life  Landmarks or points of interest? The islands it's based on are real and are based on real locations, do you not remember the promo shots comparing Crysis to pictures of the actual island?:lol: Attention to detail? Don't make me laugh... Uncharted is nothing but a scripted, cut scene heavy on the rails corridor shooter....Stalkerfieldsis

Ok, I'll make it easier for you to understand. This is how a typical level in Crysis looks, from start to finish.

It doesn't have any standout land marks. It looks bland. There's no immediate wowness to Crysis like there is in a game like Uncharted. It's just the same sh!t copy and pasted.

Crysis warhead train level:

looks better (at the very least from a technical viewpoint). I see an enemy jeep over on my right, it looks good graphically, I can jump off the train and run through the brush and plywood shacks between the train and the jeep, all of it still looks good even while up close, and are interactive (foilage has physics that react to you moving into them, and the shacks are dynamically destructable) and not just static background pieces not reachable by the player, I get to the jeep, it and everything around it still looks good even though I'm much closer to it than I would be on the train, where I'm kind of supposed to be (by the way the mission doesn't even fail if you leave the train, the dev's completely meant to give you the option to leave), the jeep is dynamically controlled by AI (not on rails and 100% scripted in how it drives and is destroyed unlike in Uncharted 3), is destructable at any time by any means, has dynamic part based damage (gas tank explodes if shot, tires can be popped and cause the vehicle to lose control in a non-scripted way 100% dictated by real-time physics), and if the driver is killed, I could even hijack it and defend the train by driving alongside it, all during which the game takes no hit in graphics or performance. And then of course I could go back on to the train and continue the mission in a more "traditional way". All while running advanced render tech, max settings, REAL 1080p resolution (with a beefier PC it could even go up to 2560x1600, much better than even 1080p), at 45-60fps on a (at the time when I first played Warhead) 2 year old $900 PC (warhead is MUCH easier to run than Crysis 1 but looks better), considering ALL this, the funny part is even though this is FAR more dynamic and non-linear than Uncharted, its still one of the more restricted Crysis levels!!!

Uncharted train level:

Very narrow path, the order of all events are scripted and the player is very carefully restricted and guided in his/her progression, enemies are introduced only on the train, other enemies off the train are introduced in a 100% scripted manner and how they die is static, the player cannot leave the train dynamically, and sometimes all movement control is removed from the player completely, besides the enemies basic ragdoll bodies there is nearly no dynamic physics, there are 100% static, low res, and low polygon vegetation along the side of the train, the terrain and level area outside the train is so uninteractive that most of it doesn't even have collision detection (its not solid, objects will go through it), nothing is dynamically destructable, all the textures are modest to low resolution, render technology is along the lines of years old DirectX 9.0C tech, the objects all have lower polygon counts than the Crysis example, all running below the acceptable framerate threshold of 30fps, running at the BARE minimum resolution to honestly be considered HD, 1280x720, a resolution I played Max Payne 1 on in 2003.

If you think that Uncharted better is better graphicallly, technically, or more complex and defined visually, you are certifiably insane. Or you're trolling, just trying to prove to any naysayers that you are 100% full of bullsh*t!

But the Uncharted 2 train level still looks more impressive. What is so hard to understand? Cmon Hermits, stop being so insecure, and stop clinging onto Crysis, it doesn't look impressive anymore.

Wow I can jump off the train in Crysis Warhead so I can stare at this texture repeated out infront of me

No it doesn't. Not at all. If you got off the train all you would see is a bunch of 2D repeated trees that belong on the DC. If it the level wasn't moving so fast, it'd be way easier to see how ugly it is.

We'll stop clinging to it when developers finally progress past it. Very few have. It still one of the best looking games ever and it was made 5 years ago.

Dunno why people doubt you're a PC gamer. You've been posting a fair bit around here and PC boards for some time now.

But the level is moving fast :?. And you're suppose to be focusing on things trying to kill you, not pausing the game to stare at some textures on the ground. I fail to understand hermit logic. If you want to talk about ugly, I can make Crysis look like one of the worst looking games ever, because it has tons of uglyness. Atleast Uncharted tries to remedy it's short comings with fantastic art.

Ok, you're switching arguments. Now it's not about what game actually is better at a technical level, it's about which one you find more "impressive" whatever that means. You were completely owned and proven wrong so now you switch your argument and openly admit the train level is moving fast therefore it's not relevant if it looks bad:lol:

Really? I thought you needed at least 512MB VRAM on your GPU before joining. Then, JodyR would PM you a link to a secret PC Union on the site where you'd undergo a series of initiation trials, such as playing a Delta Force game on v1.0 at low settings.

They all look the same (inside each set). If I didn't know I would guess they're all from the same game. I stand by what I said, Crysis+Warhead has plenty of variety, you don't know because you haven't played them.

I own Crysis and Crysis Warhead. Love them, amazing games, but they really don't look that impressive anymore.

74414504.jpg

And Rage doesn't have any tiled or repeating textures. Nothing looks the same, It's all hand crafted.

This is one area, simply panning the camera around. Show me a repeating texture.

iE2yVfgbwmMik.jpg

ibppRPEDhhWS0o.jpg

And here. Look at the cracks in the walls, the dirt, the attention to detail (ignoring the low res textures  ) is simply incredible. I find it sad that no one applauds what Rage tried accomplished visually. :( The first game to actually try imitate real life in terms of texture variation.

And Rage doesn't have any tiled or repeating textures. Nothing looks the same, It's all hand crafted.

This is one area, simply panning the camera around. Show me a repeating texture.

And here. Look at the cracks in the walls, the dirt, the attention to detail (ignoring the low res textures  ) is simply incredible. I find it sad that no one applauds what Rage tried accomplished visually. :( The first game to actually try imitate real life in terms of texture variation.

noooo. This is called "Mega Texture" and works with repetition just like a normal texture. The difference is that Mega Texture, just like the name implies are much more bigger and it's harder to see the repetition but they come at a price. They take a hell of a lot of space and that was why Carmack was saying that PS3 would look the best. Because these textures are stored in the disc and use very few amount of Ram compared to normal textures. While for the 360 they were compressed and looked a bit more blurry.

Uh, so why did the PS3 version come out the blurriest of the two consoles? Insert Jackie Chan pic here.

No one takes you seriously, just stop posting you troll. If you were a true Pc gamer or even a multiplatform gamer, you wouldnt be defending graphics on consoles once you seen all the graphical compromises made on consoles.

Rage has some of the worse texture qulaity in a game made in the last few years. As soon as you get close to the objects and walls you see pixelated and a blurry mess. The reason for it is because of the consoles only having a measly 256mb of video memory. also shadows are baked into the textures.

They're currently working on getting a texture quality increase on Rage PC. The texture assets are apparently huge, but because of some bizarre design decision for 60fps, and a really dumb front-end graphics customization option, it doesn't fare too much better than consoles at the moment.

I wish id Software would just allow PC gamers the customization they're use to. Let them play Rage at 30fps with an increase in visual fidelity. Once Rage's textures are high-res, game is going to look absolutely phenomenal. Most PC Gamers can stand a lot of FPS games at sub-30fps levels and still crown a graphics king (hell, people were enjoying Crysis at 20fps), and almost the only time they ever see a FPS game at 60fps are the ones from five years ago.

Now if they could only patch cutting-edge gameplay too :P.

Megatextures is a fail technology anyways. Taking up quadrouble+ the space of a normal game so that work is a little bit easier on artists and you have a few less repeating textures?

Ok, I'll make it easier for you to understand. This is how a typical level in Crysis looks, from start to finish.

It doesn't have any standout land marks. It looks bland. There's no immediate wowness to Crysis like there is in a game like Uncharted. It's just the same sh!t copy and pasted.

Peredith

Road.JPG

 Cmon Hermits, you're becoming a desperate joke.

I think most would agree out of the two of us, you are the desparate joke. See I aptly explained my position in depth. You just keep saying Uncharted is more impressive (very vague word, unlike my in-depth proving of my point) and that I suck, both are avoiding the actual argument (restating your opinion over and over is not an argument if you are over 12 years of age). How can it be more impressive? I have already demonstrated the Crysis level's superiority in ever specific category that could fall under the vague term of "impressive", it looks smoother, has more going on, is more interactive, is rendered with better graphics and is bigger in scale. And how are you even bringing variety into this environment? That Crysis train level alone goes from you fighting koreans on a moving train in a jungle, to fighting aliens in a swamp. As opposed to fighting generic human baddies the entire level and then a very scripted helicopter fight and train crash.

Most of the typical consolite arguments boil down to "Nuh uh, my game looks better", but then fail to provide any real evidence besides their own opinions. It's great that consolites like their systems and they defend it mainly because they don't have any other alternative, but if they can't back up their claims with anything besides what a 12 year old would use they need to STFU.

I agree with you on most parts, but Crysis 2 is almost photo-realistic, and no game can match it. I agree that Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception and Kill-Zone 3 graphics beats The Witcher 2: Assassin's Of Kings, and that the upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusives, The Last Of Us and God Of War: Ascension are eye candies.

Uncharted 2,3, Last of Us, GoW:A all look at least half as good as the best looking PC games. So to answer your question, yes there are plenty of console games that look 1/2 as good as PC games.
