yes.
I loved how the game had such an solitary, lonely atmosphere and how it had such a deep story without anyone every saying a word.
And its still up on Gamerankings top 10 overall rated games, just like it should be.
I, personally, feel that System Shock 2's atmosphere stands above all others (and it has withstood the test of time as well-I had never played it until last summer and I love the bejeesus out of it).thepwninator
Absolutely.

I actually played and finished SS2 during this summer. No other game on PC scared the hell out of me like what SS2 did.
The game holds up remarkably well.
For me, Metroid Prime was the best videogame experience I have ever had. And one of the BIG reasons for that was the atmosphere. When you get deeeep into Chozo Ruins...man that is just so...otherwordly to me. And Phendrana. And the Wrecked Ship. Oh boy. I would say the only games that have come even close to matching it in atmosphere are (IMO) Resident Evil 4 and Bioshock.
Then there's the music. And the AMAZING level design. And the somewhat creepy story. Yep. I gotta say, in my very humble opinion, Metroid Prime is The Most Atmospheric Game Ever. Hmmmm. I might have to go home and play it now. Thanks TC! :)
Seriously, has anyone here played Homeworld? It's an old AAA game, from 1999 or 2000. It's pretty hard to find in stores since it's so old, but you can get it other ways. Play it now.sdfsdafI tried to play Homeworld: Cataclysm, but it always crashed during the opening cut scene. :(
Definitively, yes.
First, you got the graphics, that were some of the best last gen.
Then, you got the incredible outdoor scenarios (Phendrana, Phazon Mines... wow)
Then, you got the indoor scenarios (the observatory, Chozo Ruins, the ship)
Then, the outstanding level desing,
Then, the great sound and sound effects
Then, the weather effects (that affect the visor, like when you come out from the water)
Everything in this game is created to inmerse the player. Imo, no game matches it.

Damn, it is. It's actually the best rated game from last gen. I think I might have to pick it up sometime, even though I really don't feel like buying GCN controllers :(.
How could Halo be copied by a series that started in the 80's[QUOTE="air_wolf_cubed"][QUOTE="XB360_John"]metroid copied halo, THAT is sytem wars fact. 110million
Because it wasn't an FPS in the 80s.
then halo copied doom, okami copied zelda, sonic copied mario, tekken is a street fighter rip off, and if you dont agree then dont complain about two good games being in the same genreSotC was pretty atmospheric, aswell as being an excellent game. Also games like Gears of War, The Darkness and Bioshock do a great job of creating tense atmosphere's. In Gears of War the sense of desperation and loss was all around you, you could even hear it in the music, it just wasn't shoved down you're throat like in games like Bioshock, and it didn't completely rely on a dark atmosphere to progress the story, strong charecterisation was mixed in their aswell to provide a sufficent level of drama and comic relief.
At the time I could never really get in to MP, I regret having sold it, I probably missed out on an excellent game I would have loved. But my tastes were diffrent then.
Even 7 years later, when I think of a game with amazing sound, graphics, controls, and atmosphere, Metroid Prime one instantly pops into my head.
Even today, that game looks great. The bosses were awesome, the environment were stunning (Phendrana Drifts anyone), and the music that went with each environment was just awe-inspiring.
So, does Metroid Prime still take the crown for more atmospheric game? I say it does.

Metroid Prime was ahead of it's time. One of the most atmospheric and immersive games EVER (#1 on consoles IMO).
It never had the best atmosphere. You want better atmosphere? You got it:
Silent Hill - Creepy fog-filled, deserted, snowy town, occasionally transforms into a hellish Otherworld with air sirens.
GTA III - Gritty yet stylish New York-ish environment.
GTA VC - For all those 80s nuts out there
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Double Agent - Either you're sneaking through the streets of South Korea while jets and missles fly through the night sky above you, or you're scaling a massive skyscraper in Shangai while fireworks explode behind you and you can see the birght lights of the Shangai skyline reach into the horizon
System Shock 2 - Stranded on an "abandoned" ship where the hum of machinery and the subtle soundtrack set a great mood
Deus Ex - A true Cyberpunk game where you really feel immersed in the futuristic world thanks in part to the incredible soundtrack
I could list more, but that doesn't matter. Metroid Prime doesn't have the best atmosphere, and it never did.
EDIT: Oh, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
I think I'm the only dude in Avant/GUFU who hasn't played STALKER.
My PC is utter trash. :(
Aljosa23
You are not the only one, I have a gaming rig and don't really want to play it.
IMO it eith goes to AVP2 marine campaing (the first level is just downright scary, you have like 3 flares and its pure darkness)
System Shock 2
or Stalker
Sticking just to FPP action games...
Excluding PC? It's pretty close to the top, but when counting PC... games like STALKER, SystemShock2, Deus Ex, THief 1-2, Vampire: Bloodlines or NOLF2 or Undying were a lot more atmospheric than MetroidPrime
It never did.TheDudeNYC

Heres a quote from the reviewer here from gamespot.
"Metroid Prime is really an amazing accomplishment on pretty much every level, its extremly succesful, its original, it's memorable, its got everything thats good about gaming in it. Except maybe some very interesting narrative but thats hardly important when there's a game so atmospheric, and so much about exploration." Greg Kasavin
Even when you go look at the page of Metroid Prime it says.. It's not just one of the single most atmospheric games ever created, but it's also quite simply one of the best.
It still is and so are Prime 2 and 3.
Yeah nice zombie Bump. Level 49 and doing BS like this? :? Also, ever heard of Shadow of Chernobyl?yes, it does
