-More space= More stuff= better graphics

theseekar

That is onyl a tiny part of the truth and whole picture though, since you have to fit those moretextures in memory, so you dont get better graphics per scene, just more variety in the game, but each screen has to load a statndard ammount of textures in memory, so even if you have 300GB textures, you can only see 500MB at each frame, meaning you wont see anything better than 360, the only difference is that when 360 would fit a DVD with different areas, PS3 could pack more unique textures/areas in there

WOuld make ZERO difference in the looks of the graphics though

That is why RDR looks so much worst on PS3, blurry, more pop up, less foliage, lower resolution, worst shadows etc etc, even though it is on Blu Ray, space makes zero difference in the graphics quality, only in variety

because its well known the RSX is a completewreck of a GPU and isnt as powerful as the 360's

here's a comparison between the ps3 and 360 version of RDR. I think I'll get it for the 360, looks better.

but i STILL think dvd9 is not enough and they should ALLOW HDD installation.

neogaf screenshots comparison. Xbox 360 is clearly the winner.

I'd be happy to get a bigger HDD or a portable that could be used with my 360, and have games come with 2nd discs that install more data onto the HDD, and use the first disc to play. Pretty just what the multi CD-Rom games did in the late CD / Early DVD era of gaming. If it meant the games would be "better", I'd be up for it.

The problem is, I have my doubts it would ever happen. Many people buy consoles over PCs for games to escape that sort of stuff.

And you think that based on what exactly? Btw, the 360 already allows HDD installation for every game.

I agree there, some part of the game could be installed on HDD from a 2ond disk, and never have to change disks

Also i hope 360 keeps the ram-cpu-GPU architecture similar in next gen, so open world benefit, like the best versions of RDR, GTA4, Fallout 3 and Alan Wake, Kameo, Banjo 3etc show

I think the future is in huge open worlds, rather than tiny linear paths like in GOW3, Uncharted 1-2, MGS4, Killzone 2 etc

[QUOTE="IronBass"][QUOTE="def_mode"]I answered that already, look it up. I said I have no idea, but you yourself don't know it either. Numerous developers stated that disc space was an issue with DVD9 and who knows games like Alan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction could of been longer. I am sure that there are games out there that suffered from limited disk space. Not only in the content department but in graphics and audio as well. Not to mention the other features. def_mode
We are talking about a technical subject. When talking about a technical subject, what we "are sure" of is not really relevant if we don't have actual data to back it up. Especialy when your two examples (Conviction and Alan Wake) were made on a single DVD. If DVD was an issue, as you speculate, they would have used two discs.

How would you know that DVD wasnt an issue? How would you know that they didnt cut pieces off the game to make it fit on the DVD? Point is, no one knows, we all speculate here. we are not the developers and we barely have any idea what we are talking about. At the end of the day, having more space opens up possibilities, opportunities and potential for developers to make games. If a GTA4 developer and other developers said the disc space was an issue then it really is an issue, regardless of what or how they distribute the downloadable contents. I used Alan Wake as an example, why? just wait till they release a bunch of DLCs

Alan Wake only took up 2.5GB on the game disc, the rest was cutscenes.

How dare MS save me 200 bucks 5 years ago by not adopting a new technology, one that in fact was co-developed by their largest console competitor.

How dare MS not force 40 million people to buy an add-on now, to take advantage of a new format that only won 2 years after the launch of the 360!

Really?

DVD9 is an issue. So is slow blu-ray drives, 528 MB split ram configs, tri-core and 1 core + 7 spu processors, ancient video cards, etc.

Don't over blow the significance of blu-ray this gen. 3 PS3 exclusives look marginally better then 360 exclusive games, while the 360 still wins in multiplats by a fairly large amount of games means blu-ray is a necessity now? Even though it almost single handily drove the cost of the PS3 to $500 plus dollars? Really?

DVD9 was the right choice this gen. A blu ray less PS3 would have launched virtually day and date with the 360, at the same price point. Then we may have seen a way different generation. Especially with the RROD fiasco at 360 launch.

Blu-Ray cost Sony first place.

then there's something wrong, otherwise Rockstar wouldn't complain about it if we could just install the game on the hard drive. then some guys here said that Ms doesn't allow mandatory installation for any games.

There are tow major things to keep in mind

1. With 512MB ram, you can only see 500MB textures max, if that at once

2. To fill a Blu ray with compressed unique different textures (the ONLY thing that would be usefull for), would take a team of 200 people and 10 years development for each game, that is why the only use of Blu ray this gen is for uncompressed textures, which make minimal to zero difference

Next gen, IF ram is bigger, Blu ray will matter, because the compressed textures to use would by bigger in size and more and fit in ram too

yes sorry I'm not a native english speaker. btw, if the problem is "space", couldn't it just be solved by installing games on the hard drive without having to switch discks in open world games? is it so complicated? Also, now people could also use USB's to store data, so I think that's the best solution, if a solution is needed at all.

MS have said in the past that they will allow games to require a hard drive in the MMO genre. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9030697/Microsoft_readies_hard_drive_required_Xbox_360_games?taxonomyId=165 If space became a huge issue, I'm sure they'd do the same thing, along with a very good price cut or something.

They charge for the third disc, which has only affected two games, IIRC. Hardly a "monopoly".

probably it's not possible because of the arcade models...but now they allow usb's to be used..so maybe that's one of their solutions

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I'm saying that MS would allow it - so the topic of mandatory install not being allowed is worthless. Yeah it's currently MMO, but there's no reason MS wouldn't do the same for another genre.

If MS had any sanity left in them they'd let publishers make HDD-only games. Customers have to buy HDDs if they want to play certain games, and publishers are no longer limited by the arcade business model. Of course, MS will never do that because it makes too much sense.Timstuff
The number of HDD-required games can be counted on one hand, and each has valid reasons. Football Manager - Too much data being handled at a time for memory cards to handle. FFXI - MMO, persistent-content game--large storage medium required.

they are pretty much gonna have to. or switch discs every time your character takes a step

Even worse: MS might charge for a 2nd and/or 3rd disc.

Second, no. Third, yes, according to id.

with the limitations of current console hardware, and the high development cost. i really doubt we are going to see a huge 100+ hour game with huge islands... so i think at least for this gen which will probably last another 2-3 years Microsoft will be fine.

if any troubles do occur develop it for the ps3 and pc, no one is forcing them to develop on the 360.

Yes there is. Audience. Football Manager and FFXI are both niche games. Only a very limited audience would be interested in the thing. It's like with Steel Batallion and its insane controller last gen: expensive as heck, but they figured on limited uptake. Niche games can get away with things mainstream games can't...like additional requirements.

That's one of the few exceptions they've made, and everyone knows why it's required: MMOs have persistent content and therefore need someplace to store world updates and so on.
