And guess what? The market already determined that Wii U is the first of the next gen consoles. It's fanboys that try to use circular logic to use "technical specs" to determine generations. If that were true, PS2 would have not been in the same gen as Xbox or Gamecube. Sound silly now? Systems don't have to be "exactly" in the same spec league to be in the same generation.

AdrianWerner

Except that Wii U is in this gen spec league :]

Bassicaly it's like saying 16bit gen ended when Jaguar launched. But of course then sheep would argue it didn't happen, because it would mean SNES actually lost 16-bit wars..lol .

The reality is...the new gen didn't start yet. All Wii U is getting is this gen games. And games are what matter in the end.

Pretty much, with these "rules" then the Mega Drive was the winner of it´s gen beating the SNES. In fact,I´m pretty sure that by the time the Saturn came out the Mega Drive was still ahead of the SNES so same deal.

The next generation of gaming has officially kicked off with the release of the Wii U.

Am I missing something? If I'm not mistaken, there are still games on their way to the current gen consoles, so why do I see "This gen is over/finished." messages?meconate

Lems know they are enjoying their final moments of not being last this gen, so they try to make a use of it :)

Wow.. this gotta be the fastest growing thread in the history of GS forums.

So what if the PS3 ended up 3rd this gen? It was always 3rd for all those years, what changed that made this matters so riddiculously much?

Fact is, all three consoles did exceedingly well this generation: Nintendo, for recovering from the ghastly performance of the Gamecube, and catching lightning in a bottle Microsoft, for going up from an also have to having over half the core market's slice of the pie, and being in a commanding position determining the future of console gaming Sony, for recovering from their disastrous start, and coming back as strongly as they did.

Funny how you place Sony last over 1 month, when the 360 had 1 year headstart.

Doesn't matter if the 360 had a century of a headstart, the gen has finished and the race is over.

How can there be a race if everyone finishes at the same time?

well its a race from the beginning, M$ got their **** out the door first, part of the race man

  1. We go on official shipped figures. Assuming sales is irrelevant.
  2. Both shipped the same in terms of official statements/numbers.
  3. Therefore, we have a tie.

BTW all companies release shipped numbers in their official quarterly results, which is what we use.

lundy86_4

we don't have a tie, you can't just neglect 6 weeks of sales/shipped because no one mentioned it yet. If m$ came out and said they sold an extra 500k in that period that still counts, it's not the cutoff date for information... just when we stop counting the sales.

I think you failed to actually read my points. If we go off official shipped figures, how can we not note a tie? Doing so would mean that we'd have to assume a sufficient amount of shipments on MS part, without any evidence to back it up.

the point is there is missing shipped figures, and based on official figures, sony hit 70 million a month after M$ did, so unless M$ just stopped shipping 360's the month halo 4 came out... they will be in the lead. You don't even need figures for the last month, we've got sony's 70m at the "end" of the gen. And we know M$ already hit that point. so unless you can prove M$ hasn't shipped ANY 360's, its a valid assumption they are ahead.

The next generation of gaming has officially kicked off with the release of the Wii U. With the 7th gen consoles now becoming known as "last gen" we can tally up the numbers and proclaim a "winner". So who won?

1st place: Nintendo Wii ~97.18 million units (as of september)

2nd place: Microsoft Xbox 360 ~70 million units (as of october)

3rd place: Sony Playstation 3 ~70 million units (as of november) (shipped, not sold to consumers)

It was a good game, and I don't think anyone saw this coming at the end of the 6th generation.

Congrats to Nintendo, for generating new marketshare

Congrats to Microsoft, for making Sony your *****

Congrats to Sony, for averting total destruction of the PS3

Que butthurt fanboys "but teh wiiu is not next gen" and "but teh ps3 will beat all in lifetime sales"

by SW standards PS3 may be in last place but to me it was the best console this gen and next year is packed with exclusives! Can't wait for next year's GOTYs because most of them will be won by a PS3 exclusive game, you'll see.

I seriously don't get this whole gen is over thing, but then again it's SW the place where logic doesn't exist. A gen end when they stop making the consoles for it, not when a new gen arrives. Your parents' generation didn't end because you were born.

Thank you! That's what I've been saying for days. People are debating numbers for two systems that are still on the market, and that are likely to change after the holiday season anyway.

All of this debating is pointless right now.

Wait? Does this account for Sony's 1 year late arrival to the market? I mean, for Sony to have tied MS being on the market 1 less year is kinda embarassing for MS imo.

[QUOTE="AdrianWerner"]

[QUOTE="Phazevariance"] Well by your remarks, ps2's are still being made and sold so I guess 6th gen is still alive. So why do people say 6th gen is over then? Because they use the start of the next gen as a clear cutoff to decide a winner, and this is why 7th gen is now becoming last gen. AdobeArtist

That would made sense if Wii U was a next-gen console, but it's not. Market decides when the gen starts, not Nintendo.

Wii U is the successor to the Wii, just as Wii was the successor to Gamecube, and N64 and SNES before that. PS3 follows PS2, which followed PS1. What is so damn difficult to understand about that?

Except PS2 was actually close in power to those other consoles that came after it. PS2 didnt come out with N64 graphics which in analogy is what Wii U is doing. Bad example there....

^^ ts a mixture of time and specs. I guess if the Wii and Wii U released simultaneously they wouldve been the same gen amirite? What if Sega made a console today with Xbox 1 specs? Sorry, specs have something to do with generations. Its not just specs though, its standards.

No, they don't, as I've explained before. If Sega were to release a new console with Xbox 1 specs, it would still be considered "next generation". There's no debating this. The Wii U is a next generation console, regardless of what you or anyone else says. Its specs have nothing to do with it and posing a series of hypotheticals isn't helping your case.

there might be a dual meaning to "next gen" one is talking about hardware stepping it up ie: next gen visuals, while we are refering to generations as platforms ie: wii

Your opinion of it doesn't make it irrelevant to the hardware and gaming market. It'll be competing with the Sony and Microsoft platforms regardless of whether you accept that or not.

This competition doesn't even end there. When people look back, they'll look back at the final, total figures at the time the systems are discontinued, not when the Wii U launched.

Anyway, right now the Wii U is competing with the PS3/360, not their mythical successor platforms. I don't know how we can pretend otherwise and say that sales of the 360/PS3 have suddenly become irrelevant, because they're just as relevant now as they ever were.

Of course they are. I covered this when I talked about the overlap of generations, which happens in every transitional period. Though it might be reasoned how some people look at the console race regarding how much each sold while being current gen, and then how much sold later while being last gen when the new generation begins. But that part is subjective.

Yes and they end tied lol.. So the PS3 catch up with the 360 before the end of the generation... But who say this generation ends now.? Oh wait the one who defect MS do,because sony has a history of keeping the old generation more alive than the new one several times.. The PS1 outsold the PS2 back on the start of the PS2 generation, and the PS2 outsold the xbox 360 until 2008,in fact until now and from 2005 when the 360 launched sony sold 52 million PS2,that is 18 million units less than MS sold with their shiny xbox 360.. So the generation end when current gen consoles loose their steam.
