The first professional, English review for one of the most ambitious and creative handheld games is out. Most surprising factor of all is that it got this high score despite the reviewer not understanding a lick of Japanese even including, "Gravity Daze's storyline is allegedly quite good. It will be interesting to see how much it adds to the game." Yes, it will be interesting to see how much it adds to what Japanese gamers are calling a god (kami) game.

Here's the review link, feel free to read:

I love how Eurogamer reviewed it without actually knowing what the story was about.

It really speaks volumes about their reviewing quality.

Yeah. that's amusing. What would happened if the game in fact was about the most cliché story ever?

Here is the part where everybody claims they aren't professional in anyway when all reviews are is one person evaluating the quality of whatever they where grading.

Well Gravity Rush is going to be the best game on the Vita for a while. Atleast until Persona 4: The Golden

They often review Japanese imports. They then subsequently often review the UK release.

I meant from the Vita's lineup specifically. The game's they reviewed either had an English option (Golden Abyss) or were accessible enough (Wipeout 2048).

I don't see the issue.

When it comes out in English, presumably they'll either update their review, post a separate one or repost the same one and state that they still think it's an accurate review (like for Demon's Souls and El Shaddai).

Don't even know the story and it got a 9? Sounds like a good game. IF the story turns out to be crap, I'm sure the cutscenes will be skippable so who cares? I still see this as Vita's killer app.

Turn based RPGs are incredibly dull to play. Pretty much the only reasons to play them are for the storylines and characters. It's why I play them.

I still say that's full of sh*t. A boring ass game with a great story (lol) will still be a boring game. A fantastic game with a script by george lucas will still be a fun game to play as long as it isn't intrusive. Example: MGS4. Such a terrible story but you could skip almost all of it. The gameplay was great.

I'm all for stories in video games although it doesn't make sense that anyone would play games ONLY for stories. If all you care about is stories than just watch a movie, TV series, or read a book. For one, it'd be much cheaper, and secondly, since the whole point of a movie, TV series, or book are the stories they are typically better executed than those in video games.

Different strokes for different folks (and different tolerance levels). There's nothing about visual novels to make them enjoyable to play whatsoever (at least for me - puzzles are boring). But the stories are why people play them.

You get to interact with the characters in visual novels and direct the plot in different directions.

And what are video games if not "interactive, fun experiences played on a screen"?

Isn't this an Action/puzzle game? Then the story shouldn't really matter. Sure, a great story in an action game makes it a lot better but I don't think I've ever thought less of a game if the story was bad.

I would understand the worry if it was a JRPG, adventure or visual novel game were the story would be the reason to play the game.

Well I love the later Jak games so I don't think a bad scrips for an open world game action could ruin it for me.

Pokemon has one of the most stale and boring Story's ever, yet their insanly fun and addicting, the fact that they Eurogamer didnt understand it at all yet HAD A BLAST goes to show how fun this game is. Im amazed at the people bashing this cause we dont know the story...SO MANY games have terrible stories yet its the gameplay that matters, idk about you but I play video games to PLAY THEM, not sit down and watch a interactive movie.

Eh, most people play games because they're fun. I doubt story is the reason why people are so intersted in Gravity Rush to begin with ... so it doesn't really matter (for the most part) if the reviewer reviewed the Japanese version without having any knowledge of the language.

I can see why a lot of people play games for story ... but I find that weird.

I can ignore bad gameplay design (to a certain extent) if the story is interesting enough (No More Heroes), but with others I get really frustrated (Mass Effect 1, despite liking the overall universe of those games). Usually, I play a game because it's fun and a great story is a definite nice bonus. The Assassin's Creed games are a great example of this because I like the gameplay the most, however those games wouldn't be as great as they are with ordinary characters, settings and a cliched story - all those elements combine into the 'Assassin's Creed' experience.

So overall I don't think it's so black and white to say 'I only care about gameplay' or 'I only care about story' - it totally depends on the game. I can agree with Aljosa here that I probably wouldn't care about the story in Gravity Rush, as the gameplay is where it shines. It looks interesting to play and has a visual design that adds to that immersion. Where as, someone might play something like Mass Effect because they love the story and being able to guide their Shepard through the game using their own choices.

This makes me so glad :) Gravity Rush is slowly turning into a system seller for me.

Of course they're games.

You get to interact with the characters in visual novels and direct the plot in different directions.

And what are video games if not "interactive, fun experiences played on a screen"?

You love Pokemon yet are bashing Gravity Daze cause we dont know the story ? seriously man ?

He's not bashing Gravity Daze.

All I'm saying is that a reviewer should take everything (including the story) into consideration before assigning a numerical value to the game, and it's unprofessional for the reviewer to do so prematurely.

If he wanted to do a "first-look" article of the game, that's one thing.

But reviewing is something else entirely.

I can see where you guys are coming from with the stories. But the game would be weird if it was all about stories.

No worries.

I knew where you were coming from from the start.

Maybe not the game itself, but he puts Eurogamer into question about their review simply because *they couldnt understand the story* Often games dont need a amazing and well written story, yes it does help the game but in the end its all about gameplay. Some people do play for story lines, I myself play some games knowing im going to get one hell of a awesome time out of it, that hits me on a emotional level that I can take with me after I put down the /handheld/console/mouse. The game is fun to play and thats all I need, one of my fav games is God Hand, pretty average story (however I love it) but the gameplay is so deep that who cares about the goofy story when im having fun.
