I'd be pretty shocked if Sony cut the price of the PS3 twice less than 12 months after launch. Weren't they losing enough money already?

Even if they did that, a $400 PS3 wouldn't guarantee victory. There still aren't many compelling reasons to purchase the console at this time. I could see a price cut at some point in 2008, but a price cut now would be rather surprising.

Please to note that the PS3 is recieving a lot more games during the holidays. This would be at the same time as the price-drop. This quarter, Sony has more exclusives coming out than the 360 does; Mass Effect is about it for this year.

Well, games and market penetration to name 2:

The system has games, saying it doesn't is a fanboy argument, not an argument for serious people. However, it's library does not compete with the 360s. In the future, who knows, but we don't live in the future, and most casuals don't look that far ahead.

As for market penetration, if Billy wants a system and looks around and sees 10 friends have the 360, and only 1 or 2 have the PS3, which is he going to choose? He's played more of the one, he can trade games with buds thereby saving money, bring his games over to their houses, you see where I'm going. Last gen, nearly everyone I know who games chose the PS2 over the Xbox due to this basic scenario or some variant.

when this new ps3 comes out supposdly oct. 30th there will be plenty of games for anyone to pick up. heavenly sword, resistance, warhawk, motorstorm, ninja gaiden, folklore, the eye of judgement, guitar hero 3, and RATCHET AND CLANK. then the following week with call of duty 4 and blacksite area 51 and all the big holiday release just around the corner.

With nothing to rival Halo 3 in sales in NA, the PS3 will lose there completely. No unreal 3 will not put up Halo numbers on PS3 because most of that community of unreal gamers have to have become morons to suddenly not play the superior PC version.

Sony was losing hundreds of dollars on each PS3 sold around launch. While I'm sure the kinks in their supply chain have been worked out enough that the number is now below the $200 level it was at before, it doesn't mean that Sony can continue to lose hundreds on each console and expect to make it up in game sales. Remember Microsoft? And Sony needs that profit far more than Microsoft needed it when the Xbox was out.

Sony was the market leader last generation. They shouldn't be the ones forcing major losses on themselves in order to move units. They'd have to be really worried about losing everything in order to do that, because the monetary return alone wouldn't justify such a move.

Defining "decent" as whatever game scores AAA on a review site is illogical. Sales does fully allude towards game quality.

Halo 3 could be notoriously bad and the Bungie faithful would still buy it to "finish the fight." The Halo exodus had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with noteriety.

MS already made a 50$ profit on the 360 while Sony still sold at a loss , MS just put the Falcon in the shops with the 65 Nm chip set that's cooler , more reliable and even cheaper to make .

Considering they have already established a strong userbase, their time for market penetration has passed. Sony is still knee-deep in their first year of erecting a user-base.

You're greatly under-estimating the efficiency of mass-production a year after release. Yes, they were losing money in the first order, but with Blu-ray and the cell picking up in the market, mass production gets cheaper with each assembly-line built.
