I dunno, my TV is pretty amazing.

Yes I like their TV's myself, but Sony's TV's are doing bad enough that they to have to merge with Toshiba and Hitachi just to try and compete Samsung and LG among others. Their electronics have been on a downward trend for years now, and their gaming division was recovering finally before the whole hacking thing, earthquake, and other disasters. This is not to say that the OP is true, but just that Sony is struggling as of late.
I don't know if Sony's been on a downward trend, so much as they just haven't had a hit product like they had with the original walkman and discman (and PS1/PS2 for that matter). I'm not so sure they were the "best" then either, it was more a matter of perception with consumers. Of course I had several Discman CD players that lasted for years and years so I was quite pleased with their quality (and I still have them as well). However for whatever reason, the walkman brand never worked out against Apple in the MP3 market. The actual hardware on some of their MP3 walkmans has actually been pretty nice, but they screwed up by having bundling them with terrible DRM and terrible software to go along with those players. Once IPOD and itunes took over, Sony was basically left to compete against Sandisk and Phillips for what was left of the market share. Quality wise their MP3 players are pretty solid right now IMO.
As far as TV's go, I don't know if they are the best, but I think people are severely underrating them. I'd take a Sony over a Samsung or an LG ANY day. Granted the fact they don't produce their own panels is a concern. The Sony TV I have now, is actually a Sharp panel. Not a bad thing because Sharp probably makes the BEST panels right now, but in the old days (i.e. CRT televisions) I doubt Sony would have been parterning like that, Sony from 10 years ago probably would have produced their own panels and let other manufactuers use their technology, not the other way around.
