Those consoles (IMO) should be the top 4. I would personally put it as PS2, NES, PS1, SNES in that order. But any of the 4 would make a good choice for no. 1.

I love my XBox 360, but I have to agree that it's not the #1 console every made. The PS3 & Wii weren't even on the list? What's up with that? I would say the PS2 or the SNES would be in the #1 spot. Here is my list.
#1) PS2
#2) SNES
#3) N64
#4) DS
#5) Genesis
#6) XBox 360
#7) PS3
#8. Wii
#9) Dreamcast
#10) PS1
#11) Gamecube
#12) NES
#13) Sega Saturn
#14) Sega Master System
#15) Turbographix
#16) 3DO
#17) SNK Neo-Geo
#18. Colecovision
#19) Atari 2600
#20) Vectrex
#21) Jaguar

Pre-April fools joke?
Seriously something is just wrong with you if you actually believe that. 360 is just nowhere near being the best console for its time.... especially considering PS3 has prettymuch caught up and will be surpassing it soon.
Lazy_Boy88
The PS3 still has a long ways to go to catch the XBox 360. Another 7 million units to go won't be a cake walk, especially if M$ can get their console down to $250 or less before the holidays or before Sony does another price drop. Even is the PS3 does catch the 360 it's still miles away from the Wii. It a long uphill battle to the top for the PS3. Can it make it before Nintendo and Microsoft launches a new system?
I agree though the XBox 360 isn't the nest console, but neither is the PS3 or Wii. ;)
I'm sorry lemmings.
No way in hell a console with such a high failure rate, probably the highest and worst type of failures EVER in a console, should get best console ever. No way in hell.
Seriously. The biggest advantage of the 360 has been the titles. Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Gears are the big reasons for its power. But those games are doable elsewhere. Nothing in 360's hardware allows those games to run on 360 and wouldn't allow them to run on PC or PS3. It a matter of time before others get their storng titles. Then what?
Anyone who says the 360 is the best console ever/ever owned. Shut up. Don't even talk...
If you have owned a PS2, PS1, SNES, or a NES before then, don't even talk.
I love my 360, and it has given me NO problems the past year I have had it, but it is nowhere close to the greatest of all time. And never will be.
I have closer games to my heart than that damn console. As far as I see it, PS2 is above it, along with at least SNES, NES, and PS1. Maybe you guys should play more games before you even call the 360 the greatest of all time.
But, it is an opinion. A very, very, idiotic opinion.
-Karmum-
Well how many consoles do you have to own in order to qualify to have your own opinion? I started gaming in 1984 and have been hard-core ever since. Not including PCs (which are a large part of my gaming legacy) I've owned...
Atari 2600
NES
SNES
Game Boy
Game Gear
Genesis
SegaCD
32X
Dreamcast
PS1
PS2
PS3
Xbox
Xbox 360
Wii
NDS
PSP
...and spent meaningful time with the Saturn, N64 and Neo Geo.
All that being said, I agree with the premise of the thread title. Not necessarially the reasons listed in the article...and I'm using my own criteria for determing what the phrase "the best console" means.
But what does it mean to you? Durability? Sales? # of top-tier games?
All of thsoe are worthy measures to be sure, and many will use those.
For me, I use "entertainment value", which is partially gleamed from the LIVE experience. Like I said earlier in the thread, playing on LIVE is like standing in an arcade. Social gaming 24/7, done WELL (though with dedicated servers, it'd be better). For me, I'd rather play a descent AA game with friends than a AAA game without.
No, let me rephrase that...I'll get more life out of an AA game that I can play with friends than I will a AAA game without.
My reality is that I'd rather play Chromehounds, Dead or Alive, Ace Combat or Gears of War--which I can literally get 2 years out of EACH by playing online with friends--than Final Fantasy 13 (which will last me maybe 100 total hours before it begins collecting dust) or the next Zelda (which will last me maybe 30 hours) or the next Mario game (which will last me about 25 hours).
Not that I won't be buying those games (because oh, I'm drooling over them), but the point remains: though most of those examples are not BETTER GAMES in and of themselves, the HUMAN ELEMENT (that is, the social intangibles) makes these games staples of libraries that can stand the test of time.
This is why people like me this time last year were saying to Sega, regarding Virtua Fighter, "No online = no buy." After getting used to LIVE and gaming socially, it's damn near impossible to go without it.
I also said in this thread that without online gaming, the 360 wouldn't be in my top 5. But with it...it's a whole different stroy, IMO.
Of course, your mileage may vary...and I expect Sony and Nintendo to catch up to the online experience LIVE offers nextGen, but right now? I firmly and easily affix the 360 to the top spot.
And again, it really has little to do with sales or game scores. It has everything to do with the fun and value the intangibles of humans brought together to have fun together on a macro scale. LIVE does it better than any other console.
If the 360 were RROD-free, I'd be a near flawless offering (the console itself, games notwithstanding).

These are excellent selections.
For my money, though...360 has had the top spot.
You do realize that 6 out of the 9 games you listed haven't even been released yet, right? And 2 out of the remaining 3 are multiplat. :|Fable 2, Mass Effect, Lost odysey, Ninja Gaiden 2, Too Human, Banjo 3, Bioshock, Alan Wake, Kingdom Under Fire2: Dominion
It is DEFINATLY the best console of all time so far, by miles
saolin323
Indeed that makes a great point; the 360 games are so damn great they get ported at a later date to the PC and sometimes the PS3 if their lucky !Halo 3, Bioshock, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, Project Gotham Racing 3 and 4 and Crackdown?
So basically the 360 is the greatest console of all time because half it's games are PC mulitplats? What?
DireToad
That's what you mean - I'm certain ! ;)
Does someone here forget the huge problems the PS2 had?No way in hell a console with such a high failure rate, probably the highest and worst type of failures EVER in a console, should get best console ever. No way in hell.

Stevo_the_gamer
Did I say PS2 was the best console ever?
And the types of failures, I feel, are far worse on the 360 than the PS2. A lot of the DRE's could be fixed with at-home measures. The RRoD issues renders the system useless. Not to even get into disc scratches.
They obviously don't have a baldy what they are doing. How can the gamecube make that list and the Wii not?BurnsmiestaThe console hasn't been out long enough and its library of good games is rather minuscule compared to the GameCube.
Forgive me, for I just assumed you would think the PS2 as one of (if not, the) the greatest console(s) of all time. As a fellow Xbox 360 owner who hasn't received even a single problem on my Xbox 360 since November 22nd, 2005 -- I have to disagree with what you say. My PS2 was a launch PS2, it broke -- I got it replaced for a fee of $122, If I remember correctly, maybe more, maybe less. After that, possibly only a year later: the disk drive ate my disk, in which I had to prive the bastard open, in which out of frusteration I threw my PS2 out the window and then bought a new one. :PDid I say PS2 was the best console ever?

So, that's pretty much why I'm in love with the Xbox 360. It's given me amazing games while staying Hale and Hearty!

Which is moot when the main reason why they chose the Xbox360 was a handful of games they listed..
[QUOTE="wok7"]They're probably going by most amount of AAA million sellers, in which case 360 wins for how many its gotten in the short time its been out.princeofshapeir
Most, if not all, of those "AAA" titles are for the PC as well.
Oh crap. I just said the "P" word to Wok7.
And they still scored and sold better on teh 360, uh oh
Game library wise, I can't really argue with them up to this point, who knows about the future. Hardware wise, could be better.Exeed_Orbit
Of course you can argue with them, have you ever played a Gameboy or a PS1/2?

On topic: That's very bold of them. I love my 360 games and all, but the quality of the lineup just isn't high enough to be one of the greats. Quite frankly, I don't agree.

God you went that back in the system war pages for this. madness..
this list is laughable at best, especially seeing the ps2 nowhere in the top 3. They did gain some credibility seeing that the defunct virtual-boy is no where to be seen but this is still nothing more than a joke. To MS credit, my 360 has seen some pretty rough nights and the only RROD i've seen was when my intercooler fan died. Been running like a champ ever since.
lol, the title alone was enough to make me laugh... but having the 360 beat the SNES (which btw, number 5? No. And it is NOT beaten by the DS), the PS1, PS2 etc...
I wouldn't put it in the top 5 but it is a good console. Greatest of all time is probably just a ploy to get page hits.
I love my Xbox but it's not the greatest console of all time
That title belongs to the N64 :)
Juggernaut140
HELL NO, its either snes or Ps1 and thats a fact.

Says you. If you think about it really hard, you'd realize that the NES is the best console ever.
NES at #7?
SNES at #5?
DC at #2?
That list is completely made of utter fail. The NES and SNES deserve to be higher on account of the NES saving the entire gaming industry's very existence and the SNES simply because it's one of the best consoles ever made. As for the DC, it was a good console, but I'd say somewhere around #7 or #8 on a list of top 10 consoles.
And obviously, even the idea of putting the 360, or any current gen console as #1 only reeks of bias or bribery.
