Shortly after Microsoft and Sony held their E3 press conferences on June 10, GameStop had pre-order SKUs in their system for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 respectively. With price points and launch windows announced, both systems were available for consumers to reserve almost immediately. Just over a week later, the pre-order SKU for Xbox One has been removed from GameStops system corporate-wide without explanation.

As of this morning, GameStop management has confirmed that they are not currently taking reserves on Xbox One. No official explanation has been given for the removal of the SKU at this time, and GameStop has not clarified whether or not they will re-open the reserve list at a later time. PlayStation 4 is still available for reserve, and Sony recently announced that GameStop has pledged to buy every PlayStation 4 they can get their hands on.

This can mean one of two things:

  • That the Xbox One is sold out, and that is why it is no longer available for pre-order within Gamestop's systems. This would imply that the Xbox One pre-orders sold out in spite of all the bad press the console has been getting, and before the Playstation 4.
  • That Gamestop has recalled the Xbox One, maybe because the console is so inherently unfriendly towards their retail oriented business model. This would also explain why the system has vanished without a trace from Gamestop's databases countrywide.

So which do you think this is? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

It would only mean they are sold out and are probably trying to get a larger supply.

As you know, my locals told my son they were sold out so make of it what you will. I see no reason for them to lie if it's something else.

Select stores will be able to trade used X1 games and Gamestop the biggest used game market would surely be one of them.

Aw, how aggressive towards an OP that is completely neutral, and just asking two sides of a question without being leading in any way. It's not my fault Microsoft has made your life so hard as an Xbox fanboy.

That is true, yes, which is why I posted that possibility first, but would that explain how the system is simply no longer listed in their databases anymore? I recall when Wii U pre-orders sold out, the system was still listed. Ditto with Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 IIRC.

The answer is quite relative. You see, Xbox fanboys will be yelling to their Kinect systems and wondering why Microsoft is so hell bent on screwing them around while the Sony fanboys will rejoice knowing that they will possibly gain the satisfaction from seeing their enemies fail on a gigantic scale. From my point of view, I will argue that the gaming industry, Gamestop and the subsequent fanboyism drivel will die eventually, so why delay the inevitable. I say to hell with good and bad, let us see what happens and hopefully, it is going to be a delightful form of entertainment to see how things pan out.

Probably the usual production/availability issues often associated with a console launch. Heard they're having eSRAM yield problems.

I dunno about that and I could be mistaken but didn't they ink some deal with MS recently? If so, can't imagine this somehow being a bad thing for X1.

They probably don't actually know how many they'll have at launch so they've pulled it until they get accurate figures.

Yeah, I remember Microsoft announcing Gamestop as the first of the retail partners that would be allowed to trade in used Xbox One games. Maybe it's just the Xbox One selling out, then. Which is... a good thing, especially since it sold out before PS4.

Maybe the initial unit allocation was low compared to the PS4's. Wasn't MS having yield problems with the ESRAM?

We don't know the supply they are working with.

I've been through this too many generations. I remember when the PS2 shipment was cut from a million to 500,000.

Sell out could equate too 200,000 units or 2 million units.

One tactic also employed is companies after launch is keeping a thin supply at launch to artifically inflate demand, although that doesn't work forever. It seems counter intuitive, but there is a method to the madness.

I'm hoping they are planning on refusing support. It might create a cascade effect through other retailers.

You second assumption is ridiculous. Do you understand how much profit they would lose on not selling the next Xbox. Microsoft has even said you can trade in games at select stores.

The second assumption is asking the other side of the question, and is based on the fact that all mentions of the system seem to have vanished from Gamestop's databases without a trace. It is also a popular GAF theory, which is why I decided to entertain the notion in the OP. Nowhere did I once say I subscribed to it.

spencer again said no yield problems, but doesnt really matter much, xbox 1 is going to be sold out at launch but Sony will have more systems out there, at that point people will finally get to see what they like and next gen is off to the races with Sony in lead. I think microsoft is aware they are behind, no reason to over supply for demand. they need it to just get out there and see if it is going to WOW like they think it is going to be.

The gamestation in my city has a big sign in the window saying 'XBOX ONE SOLD OUT', so I'm guessing that's it. Gamestop in particular have agreed a big deal with MS and publishers over used games, so I doubt they'd not stock it after going through that whole process.

the xbox is so big you can only fit a few in each gamestop.

th?id=H.4607719280607332&pid=15.1

this is the first incoming shipment and there is only 12 on there.

All of the Gamestops around me are sold out of XBox One preorders. I was able to get a PS4 from there though. I had to get the XBox One from Best Buy who still has plenty available from what I see. You have to pay for the whole thing up front however. So maybe Gamestop didn't get a lot of XBox Ones. Thats what it looks like to me...

Ya makes sense a company thats main function is to sell games and consoles will stop selling a console that they could have made a large amount of profit from meanwhile sending potential customers to rival stores.

It's number 1,not number 2.MS will be pissed if GS did that and the GS customers that are interested in that console would not want to shop their anymore if number 2 actually happened.

Lol X1 selling out, that's pretty funny. I wouldn't be surprised if Gamestop drops any sort of support towards the X1.

Ya makes sense a company thats main function is to sell games and consoles will stop selling a console that they could have made a large amount of profit from meanwhile sending potential customers to rival stores.

Do you realize a good portion of their profits come from USED games

You do realize they will carry Xbox One USED games don't you?

How much is a good portion? I am betting you have no idea. Also certain stores will be able to trade games for X1 and considering Gamestop is what it is I am sure they are one of them.

[Quote=" "]Shortly after Microsoft and Sony held their E3 press conferences on June 10, GameStop had pre-order SKUs in their system for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 respectively.

PlayStation 4 is still available for reserve, and Sony recently announced that GameStop has pledged to buy every PlayStation 4 they can get their hands on.charizard1605

Because they have 12 bundles for sale now, instead of just the console?

It's number 1,not number 2.MS will be pissed if GS did that and the GS customers that are interested in that console would not want to shop their anymore if number 2 actually happened.

Gamestop's profits come from used game sales. I don't they care if M$ gets pissed off. M$ are trying to put game retailers out of business with their console. Not just Gamestop but Gamefly, Redbox and local game stores.
