Even as a long-term fan, I too am pretty concerned with the direction that Nintendo is going in. I just hope this isn't the slippery to the company's demise.

Hey, microsoft are now the only company putting heat on Sont to make better games asnd hardware!
I think the truth of the matter is a bit different. I think that people who hold this view, hold it because of nostalgia. This isn't about games surviving because of nostalgia. This is about you being too nostalgic. You hurt inside, it hurts you that the goold ol' days are gone. So, you waste your time trying to validate your pain. You think Nintendo is hurting gaming, I think your just too nostalgic.
Nintendo is and always was JUST A RESPONSIBLE COMPANY FROM JAPAN!!!
Yes, sushimaster.
I think it's because old Nintendo fans feel like Nintendo is killing nostalgia, as it were, not the gaming industry.
People (oh what the hell... sheep) need to realize that non-gamer and casual aren't the same thing.
I did not start gaming with non-gamer games. I did not start gaming in the 80s with Wii Fit, Cookbook DS or Brain Age.
I started gaming with games. Simpler games, yes. But they were not simple back then. Back then, Mario was hard. Games were hard. But you still played them and you learned how to play them better.
People won't turn into casuals because they're playing Wii Fit. And they sure as hell won't turn into gamers either.

 change is a good thing and if you cant get use to it... than thats your own fault
While I might be a little bit leery of the path Nintendo is taking on some things in the gaming industry, I will still be buying SMG, MP3:C, Animal Crossing, SSBB, and whatever else sounds fun that the Wii gets. I don't care what anybody says or how many casuals the system supports, there will be the games that I'm going to personally enjoy on the Wii and I don't think I'm the only one..
I don't know what will happen down the road with Nintendo, but I think right now the Wii is a fine system and I believe the upcoming games are hinting that this is only the beginning of what to expect as far as games catering to the hardcore gamers.
People won't turn into casuals because they're playing Wii Fit. And they sure as hell won't turn into gamers either.DireToad
Howthe hell do you know that? Just because you didn't start out on games like these (because you couldn't)?
They're buying a gaming console, and they know that. It's more probable that they will become interested in other games than not.
Nintendo fans will get one Mario game, one Brawl game, and one Metroid game, if history repeats itself. Instead of those or other hardcore games they get Wii sports, Wii play, Wii fit, Wii sleep, Wii eat, etc. How anyone can be happy with that is beyond me... and not to mention that the so called 3rd party is absolutely trash. One dev even said 'why make one PS3/360 game for 20 million when you can make 4 Wii games with that.'I'll never understand this mentality. I have an xbox and 360, I play some games, have a good time, relax and get a little vacation from reality while I do it. I am not attracted to Nintendo games because I never boughta system during the time when Mario became huge. (I am old enough to have done it. I playedpong on a black and white TV.) But what does it matter if Nintendo tries to make a lot of games for the casual market? They will still make Metroid and three billion Mario games and Zelda. They will still make Pokemon and all the other stuff. They will just make a bunch of games that are non games and appeal to a broader base. How does this effect anyone personally? They make an inexpensive machine with popular (if goofy to me) games and characters and are trying to broaden the base of game players. I just don't see how they owe anyone anything other than a quality product to people.
Besides, I am a believer that the more people they bring into gaming, the more they will expose people to All gaming. I came to gaming as an adult with a wife and kids as a way to relax. The first game I ever completed was Halo CE. Maybe Nintendo will get people to play Wii Fit, Mario goofy version of the moment, Donkey Kong or whatever, then some of these people will see Metroid or Zelda and give it a try. Then they are on XBL screaming smack at a spoiled 12 year old ina Halo 3 match a year later. It could happen.

That's the logical perspective. Hardcore gamers seem to be in "frenzy mode" since Nintendo announced WiiFit.I've said before, Subrosian is being pretty melodramatic
There is nothing to suggest that ALL the Wii will get iss minigames.

Good games are already showing face, and there's no reason to think that there won't be more coming. Especially for 3rd party devs, it will just take a little time to use their imagination to have some more creative uses for the Wii controls aside from the obvious, and I think that will be part of the breakthrough in what core gamers are looking for.
I could care less about Nintendo, their prodcts haven't appealed to me for more than 10 years. My only fear is that if their success continues that Microsoft and Sony will see following their example of appealing to non-gamers as the only way to walk away with a significant market-share. The day that all we say in terms of games are things like Wii-Fit and the same old franchises(Mario and Metroid, Nintendo where are the 1st party original I.P.s?) is the day I cease to play videogames. In the midst of Nintendo's success they've forgotten that Hardcore gamers are the most important market. That's the market that cares about videogames as art, that's the marketshare that'll wait outside for a midnight launch. Nintendo seems to haveforgotten about that market.espoacMore hysteria, Nintendo has more franchises that appeal to the Hardcore market being released later this year. The original IP's happend to be casual franchises but remember the hardcore market is mostly about older franchises. Calm down

Because I'm fully aware of the repercussions poor quality casual-oriented titles had on the gaming industry and was around personally to see the horrors of the SNES Edutainment games, a kind of horror I had hoped to never see again.
I still hold onto some traditional ideas of what gaming should be and the vast majority of the Wii catalog meets none of these criteria.
you are fully aware of these "repercussions", really? Because Im not. There has never been anything like the Wii before. No one has ever tried to appeal to the videogame-casual market. There has NEVER been anything like this before. How do you know whats going to happen? What can the Wii doto thevideogame industry,at its peak right now, that could hurt it? Minigames?According to Willys random posting, there are only 7 or 8 out of the who-knows-how-many-games the Wii has. Are you magic? Can you predict the future? The SNES. Early days of gaming, there was no such thing as hardcore back then. Videogames were hobbies until now. Today They are common household objects.

Nintendo is going in the wrong direction. The non-gamers are following them...and the hardcore have no choice but to follow because as you said Nintendo holds the rights to Metroid and Zelda, etc. And the hardcore don't want to accept change, accept the fact that what Nintendo is doing is wrong for games so they will bash and hate you for this post...but deep inside they know it too.

Anyway, just stop posting in this thread since it is really old and was revived for no reason.

But there is something wrong when the company decides to abandon the hardcore and foucs only on the casuals...then the hardcore have to lower their standards greatly.
Oblivion this this for me. Morrowind was a way better game because it was more complex, oblivion in my opinion was dumbed down to appeal more to the casuals...

If they were abandoning hardcores they would stop making hardcore games. Which obviously, they are not. Batallion Wars 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem (Cmon, this is like the hardcorest of hardcore games here), Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. These are all by Nintendo and appeal to hardcore gamers.

Wii Sports = Very Casual, Demo game for the Wii, no depth,
RE4 = Great Game...but also a Remake and available on the GC, PS2, and PC
TP = Great game, but falls short compared to other Zelda's IMO
Excite Truck = Are you kidding?
MP 3 = Great Game, nothing bad to say about it.
Super Mario Galaxy = Haven't played it. I reserve judgement
The Wii having "bad" games has nothing to do with it. As you can see, Nintendo is still releasing good games (TP and MP3) so you shoud be blaming the third parties instead of Nintendo. However, this is all completely off topic so stop talking about it.

Anyways Tp was and is the best zelda to date, ppl need to hop of OOT's jock because it SUCKS, big time.
