I understand...GT5P as an arcade racer is freaking awesome....as a SIM it's garbage..

EmperorSupreme

You should call the car manufacturers and let them know. I don't see anyone running to Microsoft or EA. Car manufacturers themselves work with the GranTurismo team and even use GranTurismo technology to demo their cars, but yeh it must be garbage.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-the-gt-by-citroen-no-the-whole-thing-this-time/

"With GTbyCITROËN, a show-car presented at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Citroën becomes the first vehicle manufacturer to cross over to the virtual worlds: An original take on a road car, GTbyCITROËN The car is the result of a partnership between Citroën and Polyphony, designer of the driving simulation game Gran Turismo 5 on Playstation 3."

Nissan GT-R

So because the GT-R uses navigation software built by Ploy.."which is a software company" They now are the definitive source of sim games?

Clearly you are not part of the sim community.....If you were.... you would see the consistently of sim fans saying GT5P is a garbage sim...

Gt5P is as much as a sim as Doom is a tactical squad based shooter ....GT5P is a garbage sim and nothing more than an arcade racer

To be fair, car manufacturers weren't rushing to throw themselves at Polyphony's feet until this generation with GT5, as evidenced by the fact that they've only got manufacturers like Ferrari in the game with GT:HD whereas Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche models have been featured (and even damaged) in games like Forza and PGR on the Xbox.

Another reason for this is because of GT's popularity. Gran Turismo is extremely popular in the video game world and Car makers are starting to take notice due to gaming's spot at the top of the entertainment food chain as of late. At this point, they're really only cheating themselves to not include their cars in a series that, to date has sold over 50 million copies.

I'm not knocking what Polyphony has done with the series and I think they're doing a great job with respect to the automotive industry and the sim racing genre. I just don't think they're doing a better job than Turn 10, who I also believe deserves far more attention and praise than it gets.

lol No I don't drive yet!

But that's not the point. I'm talking about this...thing that Gran Turismo has. It's not the graphics and it's not the gameplay.

I don't know, but whatever it is, Gran Turismo has it and they have it good.

AlphaGamer469

That's my point. If you have never actually driven a car, then you don't realize how hokey GT is as an alledged driving sim. That's why Forxa is so much better, it's far mre accurate as to what driving a car is actually like...

Dude i drive a car and GT is far more realistic than any driving game out their. If you have ever actually driven a tuned car you`il know what i am talking about.I havent given much time to GT5 prologue but GT4 was unbelievable. You could actually change the camber angles and weight balancing to get different results and tractions.I actually fixed my 2JZs traction with that...lol...its seriously far more realistic.

Yes, that you're a damned troll who can't think of anything to talk about other than the graphics of a game to hide the obvious gameplay flaws. Stop. Please. These threads got old a looooooooooong time ago.:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

And besides, the graphics in Midnight Club: Los Angeles look better and more technically proficent because of the pedestrians and other cars on the road. :|

Obvious gameplay flaws? You're talking about the most successful racing simulator series in history. calm down fella.

Most successful =/= the best, dude.

And the mods will officially do nothing with regards to this post, thereby proving their uselessness. :|

So forza just copied it ? lol joking. What ever the case maybe i personally think that it is the best.Yes i agree that there was the problem with donuts and tailing but not that much. And the handling requires alot of technique. When i was new to that game i hated it but with time it changes.

If anyone was still wondering, damage is still planned to hit GT5P this fall...

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-172136.aspx

W1NGMAN-

Damage was still planned for "maybe fall, might be a little bit late" in July.

Of course after this next update, we're going to have another update later on in the year. There's no plans in the works for GT5 yet - that might be 2009, or it might be 2010… But we're totally focused on getting the updates through for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and that's all we're focused on.Ripten

See, this is why I think GT5P should never have been released. Not only is it an unfinished disappointment that makes me question Polyphony's vision and therefore GT5, Prologue is effectively acting as a roadblock for it.

GT5: P is above and beyond fan service, honestly the way they've been handling the community is phenomenal. For 40$ i'm getting a lot more value than PGR3.

And where exactly did I say they didn't? I said they've only got manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche big difference here. Until GT5: P came out, a common difference between Forza and GT has been expressed in one simple statement.

"Gran Turismo has more of the cars you have to drive whereas Forza has more of the cars you want to drive."

Super sport models along the lines of the Enzo Ferrari, F430, 360 Modena, Carrera GT, Murcielago, Gallardo, 911 Turbo GT3 and others have been a staple of PGR and Forza since their days on the Xbox. The same can't be said about GT5: P, which is just getting cars like that now.

As far as GT5: P being fan service, that's exactly what it is. It was made to give GT fans a small taste of the retail product and offered for a discounted rate. It has been well supported, I'm not denying that (I do own it and all) but as far as you getting more value out of it than you would PGR 3, that's fine, everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

You mean Cows have been fooled into thinking they know how to drive fast cars by playing this ?

bumper.jpg

Dude have you really played FORZA 2 online? Just cause it has damage, doesn't stop people from bashing into each other. Or using other cars as cushions on turns, you need to realize this.

GT5 isn't going to be so realistic that once you get hit you'll fly off your couch into your T.V, if your not wearing sometype of seat belt. GT5 will be fun... Forza 2 is fun... there are certain things you can't stop gamers from doing in your game unless you want to make it not fun. Forza 2 is every much a bumper car sim as GT5....by your logic.

Why yes, yes I have played Forza 2 on-line as I own the game and from what you just wrote, it's painfully obvious you never have. There is such a penalty for trying to bumper car race by bouncing of barrier or other cars that once you tried playing a Forza game like you would a GT game; you would never try that again.

Coming in last place or not being able to finish a race b/c your car wont run is a real drag in Forza 2. No pun intended. :)

PS: I was a huge fan of GT, bought the first one on PSX the day it was released but Forza has pulled ahead of GT by miles & miles.

I agree...Poly can't even decide on a physics model for their cars..The Spec III update destroyed the hours I spent setting up my cars in GT5P...

I am not going to waste more time on that game when I have zero confidence that Poly won't do the same thing again in a few months

So if I want a realistic simulator, near similar to GT I can buy Forza 2.

Or if I want to play a fun racer, I can buy PGR4. And GT5 when it's finally available. Sounds like a plan.

What defines an actual sim, btw?

Definately not the game where you use other cars to negotiate turns and your car never gets damaged. GT has never been realistic enough to be quantified a sim. If you don't beleive me, go onto the highway and bump into a car at 60 - 70 MPH in the other lane and see what happens...

This is what I'll never understand.

People always seem to use that to attack GT, and I've never done it. I haven't, my sister didn't when I used to play GT3 with her for hours. It drives like a simulator, so why does that detract from the overall experience?

Hell, I didn't do it in Forza, PGR3/4, Motorstorm, GriD... Any racer I play. But I find it simple enough to come to a conclusion regarding whether or not it's a Sim or Arcade racer based on the driving physics.

I doubt this'll change either.

Still, most important part here is --> Had fun with GT, had ****loads of fun with GT.

Had none with Forza 2. Not an exaggeration either.

I sincerely want to build upon your post.

GT5P is a great game to play...I have a lot of fun with it.......as the driving genre is so small.....I love driving on the high speed ring and exiting the tunnel to be overwhelmed by how cool the lighting is...as an arcade racer it is the best by a long shot..

I can see why GT5P is more enjoyable as it's more of a turn key game.....The stock set-ups are mostly on point...pick a car..drive on a track and you can have some fun...

FM2 is another story..the stock set-ups are far from ideal and I believe they are set up this way to encourage a tuning community...The tuning community is insane in FM2 for this very reason....I love tweaking on my car for hours and shaving 3-4 seconds of lap time because of testing...and the community thrives because of this...

IF poly can implement a physics model that will accurately affect you car from improper driving and supply the much needed consequences for improper driving skill...add real world tracks and finalize their physics model...GT5 can be a real special game

Are we still comparing GT and Forza?

I want me a slice of this pie, and I'll state my opinion really clearly for everyone here. I've had fun playing Gran Turismo. I can't say the same thing about Forza 2.

Oooooh.

inertk

Yes, GT is the best arcade racer disguised as an actual sim on the market today...

If the handling characteristics of the car is very close to that exact car in real life, then it should qualify as a driving sim.

But this is only my opinion..

My friends say that the cars they drive in Gran Turismo are very close to the handling of that same car they own in real life.

I can't drive yet, so I don't know for myself, but every one I know that has played this game with the G25, agrees that the physics engine is very realistic.

Remember. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is default on "Arcade" Physics. You must go to the advanced settings and change that to "Professional."

If you are using a steering wheel, go to the steering options and set the mode to "Simulation."

Many people don't do this and it upsets me when they say the cars drive like an arcade racer.

Gran Turismo is like a Simulation/Arcade hybrid.

If anyone was still wondering, damage is still planned to hit GT5P this fall...

http://www.n4g.com/ps3/News-172136.aspx

masiisam

Damage was still planned for "maybe fall, might be a little bit late" in July.

Of course after this next update, we're going to have another update later on in the year. There's no plans in the works for GT5 yet - that might be 2009, or it might be 2010… But we're totally focused on getting the updates through for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and that's all we're focused on.Ripten

See, this is why I think GT5P should never have been released. Not only is it an unfinished disappointment that makes me question Polyphony's vision and therefore GT5, Prologue is effectively acting as a roadblock for it.

I agree...Poly can't even decide on a physics model for their cars..The Spec III update destroyed the hours I spent setting up my cars in GT5P...

I am not going to waste more time on that game when I have zero confidence that Poly won't do the same thing again in a few months

A certain former GS editor would have this to say about your comment.

(what review was that from, anyways?)

Fun or realism? Wait did you say video game? Oh, definetaly fun. I don't care what provides the most accurate simulation, all I know is that Forza 2 felt like a boring arcade racer, granted I'm crap, but that still dosn't change the fact I was bored (I did play through the entire game on normal though, all gold, but it got boring long before it came to that. MMO grind habits?). Same courses over and over, so many cars that all feel the same. Atleast with GT4 you got some awesome European courses. Not to mention it was more fun. But still, to be honest, I found PGR 4 to be the best racing game I have played to date, and I have played alot. The game just looked beutiful, the cars looked fantastic, the courses were varied and exciting (And there were alot of them) and the weather effects were just amazing. Nurburgring in the snow anyone? And most importantly it was great fun. As for graphics wise, and relating to this topic, I still reckon a snow encrusted F430 looks nicer. Never the less I look forward to playing GT5.

Yeah.

And Gran Turismo isn't a racing sim or an arcade racer.

Gran Turismo is a Simulation/Arcade hybrid.

Here is a part of the new Kazunori Yamauchi interview:

Q: Besides GT, are there any other games that you play?
A: No, not really.

Q: Not even other driving games?
A: No. It's more fun to drive real cars.

Q: What do you think made Gran Turismo so successful?
A: When you make a video game, you can make a rough video game or spend a lot of time and fine-tune it, which is what we did with Gran Turismo. That, in turn, presents a hidden allure to the game players.

:D
