Checkerboarding tends to be rendered below 4k (below 8 million pixels)and then upscaled to fit 4k (8 million pixels). Getting down to it dynamic scaling isnt true native 4k rendering neither.... Since all textured assets are being rendered below 4k .

Probably go for Ghost of Tsushima, the trailer for that was quite stunning. Could have easily been mistaken for as next-gen. Far more impressive than The Last Of Us 2.

@zaryia: Its not on PC so hypotheticals don't mean much. What we do know is all the best looking games now are PS4 exclusives and RDR2 on the X1X. So when the PC gets a valid award or some kind of credable recognition then I'll agree but right now none of that exist so your just daydreaming at this point.

From a purely technical stand point, probably FH4 or one of the Ubisoft games on PC

I voted for RDR2 though since it's overall the best looking if you take all the details and amazing animations into account. Once that releases on PC its over

Facts don't care about your feelings. Objectively speaking a majority of the best graphics/fps this gen are on PC. Hence the OP having to separate consoles. Everyone knows PC is the champion. Now don't you have the worst version of some game to go play?

PS4 only has 1 win in 6 years at DF. And that was on tech merits. PC won the others, and had the most runner ups. For 2014 Unity and Ryse on 4k Ultra looked better than anything on PS4.

PC does not have better graphics all the time. Not everyone has a GTX 1080 Ti etc. In fact up until a few years ago, according to Steam surveys, the most popular GPU was none.

Why do we give a shit about graphics, its all about how fun a game is. I can get lost in a fun pixelated platform game, I can sit down and play Street Fighter 2 or King of Fighters '99, the non remastered Starcraft or Morrowind. Who cares? Is your damn game fun than **** graphics.

Red dead for me looks incredible on the x.

I'd say Red Dead Redemption 2 for the draw distance alone but there's also an astounding amount of detail in each and ever thing I see in it's open world. When you stand on top of a mountain you literally see everything clearly. It's crazy! I'd call Horizon Zero Dawn a close second. Some Small-Scale genre (if you mention spider-man or HZD because they are open world you are MASSIVELY missing the point) action games which never show more than 10 enemies at once on the screen that have 200+ 10s Millions art teams employed for the sole purpose of marketing to chumps like you while the gameplay department is probably 5 people in the basement won't change the reality of the above.

Then again, the biggest games on any platform are usually not the best looking. Gameplay speaks, and Fortnite beat the lot of PS4 exclusives LOL

I'm guessing you're referring to Horizon Zero Dawn, in which case it did not win the majority of graphics awards for 2017. Cuphead did because most graphical awards are based on art not the number of pixels. By the way Horizon was lauded for the technical achievement and the clever rendering techniques used by Gorilla Games not because it was the best looking game of the year, that's entirely subjective (cough.. AC: Origins on PC... cough)

You mean "most of the effects" were already on X1X, not the PS4 Pro. Most does not mean all, leaving room for improvement which can only be achieved on stronger hardware.

Of course a game company who are heavily tied in with Nvidia are not going to use Nvidia's new rendering techniques in their new games.

I don't think those who play multiplats on consoles realize how much better the Ubisoft games in recent years look on PC.

The Division, Ghost Recon Wildlands, AC Origins and presumably Odyssey (haven't played that one yet) as well as FC5 all look ridiculous on PC with the settings cranked up at 1440p+. the different doesn't really come across in videos and screenshots that well, needs to be seen in motion on a high res screen.

these easily compete and from a purely technical perspective surpass these console games

honestly though, when it comes to determining the very best looking games, I think its ultimately subjective at this point. the technical side of things (not talking about resolution or frame rate) has got to a point where the differences in raw visual fidelity are too small to notice while playing.
