When asked about features that could make the game more accessible to new players, Yamauchi dropped an unexpected bombshell: "you can reverse your game". Assuming we can take this translation literally, Yamauchi must be referring to a "rewind" feature that has recently become popular in other racing series like DiRT, Need for Speed, and Forza. As you may expect, the rewind functionality allows you to "back-up" in time and resume play before you messed up a particular corner. This can come in particularly handy when learning a tough segment of a track, though it is controversial because some players believe having such an option makes it too easy to correct your mistakes.

Source: GT Planet

I think it's great…The feature just makes the genre more accessible…

Please no, this is the stupidest feature put into racing games, just stick with things that have a good effect on the experience like a map editor.

Exactly! I don't care how hardcore you are when your 10 seconds away from the finish and you mess up, i would much rather feel the guilt of using the rewind feature than the pain of having to go through the race again.

They made everything from scratch. All the progress of the GT series redone for one game. And it has a junk load of content. I'm pretty sure they just spent the time simply making the game.

I would say it's more likely they spent their time making over 1000 cars and 40+ tracks as well as a map maker as well as all the features Forza 3 has.

Eh, I don't care if they put it in or not. I'll probably use it a lot during time trial for learning purposes, but I think I will stick to my own standards and not touch it at all during a race.

i have a few problems with this "rewind" thing.

1. when its there then it gets REALLY tempting to use it.
2. at the end of the race you dont feel rewarded at all for using it.
3. knowing that its there will just make you more lazy in your turns because you have something that you depend on. this way you wont end up being good at the game when it comes to online when that feuture wont be there for you.

and i thought forza 3 was the only racer to have it. NFS shift and dirt 2 have it too?

more like when GRID starting using it, pretty much all other big racers would follow suit.

Can't say it's a feature that I want in GT5 but if it's there I just won't use it anyway. I'd rather lose fair and square than win using that.

Or you could use it to master certain parts of the tracks without starting the entire race over. The one thing that I, personally find destructive is the driving line. Becoming dependent on that could cause some serious problems online or in any situation when you don't use it.

Dangit, one of the features I was hoping they wouldn't copy or at least I hope they put a limit to how many times you can use it.....sure it's saved my butt a couple of times already in FM3 but it's definitely has reduced the tension during a race that I use to feel will playing FM2.

I guess the notes Poly took while at T10's E3 booth are helping them along ….I remember quite a few GT fanboys throwing it under the bus because of FM3…..I wonder what they will say now…

I'm also curious…..There're quite a few GT planet diehards on this site..They seem to post everything GT planet…I wonder why they did not post this info…

Is the rewind race feature your way of doing what GRID did? What made you want to add that when Forza 3 is a simulator? You want it to be approachable, but that feature brings it back to the arcade realm.

Dan Greenawalt: I couldn't disagree with you more. I've been in the racing game industry for over 10 years. I was around back when nobody had [the] restart race [feature]. Why? Because restart race was too arcadey. It was too easy. You gotta earn it. If you came in last place at the end? Suck it. Deal with it. That's the nature of the beast. That was what everybody said back then.

Nowadays? Guess what: you can't make a racing game without restart. It's ridiculous. Well, rewind race is a fantastic feature. Ours is different [from] GRID's. Was it a good idea in GRID? Yes it was. But they only gave you three of 'em and they penalize you for using them. That's stupid. Frankly, that's like penalizing someone for restart race.

"That's just stupid. So mark my words: five years from now, just like racing games are now doing the green line [that originated with Forza], they're all going to be doing rewind race and they're all going to be doing it just like we do."

Yea but that's part of the genre. You gotta keep your focus all the way to the end....but at the same time I can see why people like it, I'll be fine with it as long as there's an option to how many times I can use it in a race.

I can't agree with what he's saying here at all...I personally think it's stupid NOT to penalize people for using the feature and NOT limiting them to how many times they can use it.

The feature kind of reminds me of my little brother and Madden, anytime he throws a pick he goes straight to the control setup changes teams and punts the ball back to himself essentially "rewinding" his mistake...

and all I can think to myself is why play the game if you know no matter what you're gonna win?

That's where you lose the excitement of winning, and the tension of each and every race.

I don't like this feature. It takes away a lot of challenge and frustration. Sure, I have the option to not use it, but I will end up using it anyway, even though I hate it, only because it's there and I will inevitably mess up (run-on sentence FTW).

i think it is a great training tool in GT5 and forza.. This is the way i look at it: Grid is an arcade racer. Its much easier........so its ok to penalize you. But in GT5 and FM3, its a much higher learning curve, especially playing with assists off. So i can understand if neither game penalizes you. The more you try a corner, the more you learn, and if you dont have to keep restarting = the faster you learn. Learning faster helps you enjoy the game more, and get more out of it. this translates into online play, making the community larger because former noobs are now good enough to compete online. Im glad both games will have it, and hope GT5 doesnt penalize you either. It only makes you a better driver, and eventually, you wont need to use it.

I understand what you are saying…but I view it differently..I don't think of it any different than entering a code that gives you unlimited ammo/god status in a FPS..The code is there for the people that want to use it…I have never used a code like that in a game and I will never use the rewind feature in a race…

If I make a mistake that cost me the race..then so be it…I have not seen to have lost any of the tension that I enjoyed in FM2

But that assumes it's going to be used as practice... as in only available in practice mode or something.

The singleplayer carreer is the main draw for me, it's the reason I play racing games. If the rewind feature is available there, it's no longer just for practice... it negatively affects the main draw for the game in my opinion.

How? It's no different than any of the other assists, like driving line, traction control, ABS, and automatic transmission, which are all available for use if you want them. All of them cheapen the racing experience in a way. What keeps the rewind feature from being too powerful is that using it completely invalidates your lap time, removes any chance of it being a ghost for racing against later on and shunts it to the dunce section of the online leaderboards with a big icon indicating that you either cut corners, hit other cars, or used rewind somewhere during your lap. It doesn't have to be used at all, either. You can turn off the 'rewind now' text on the HUD and leave the select button alone for the course of the (ridiculously long) singleplayer experience.

well, all i can say is dont use it? Or turn it off?? I think its a good thing either way. I think it makes racing games less intimidating. It also allows noobs to be able to play and enjoy the career mode without a million restarts. I grew up playing GT series, and its frustrating to be leading going into the last lap, only to lose control and come in 5th. Sure, we can sit here on the internet and say " ill just suck it up and continue", but behind closed doors, we either restart, or it deters us from playing other longer races. This is a discouraging thing, and im glad they have it. It took me FOREVER to learn in GT, and in Forza. I had to play with assists on all the time. I think playing with assists is more of a deflating thing than using rewind. At least with rewind i actually feel i accomplished something. With assists, its like the game is doing all the work. I think its good for the genre, and expands the sim racing community by inviting noobs to come in and learn with the training wheels off, which allows them to learn faster. Assists hold your hand too much, and this is coming from a noob :P

I REALLLLY hope there is the option to permanently disable that feature. It's stupid and makes having damage meaningless. It takes the fear out of the game knowing that any mistake can be corrected at will...

How? It's no different than any of the other assists, like driving line, traction control, ABS, and automatic transmission, which are all available for use if you want them. All of them cheapen the racing experience in a way.DJ_Lae

Well, okay. But at the same time, the extent that traction control, ABS, and automatic transmission cheapen the racing experience is nowhere close to the extent that the driving line and the rewind do.

You can turn off the 'rewind now' text on the HUD and leave the select button alone for the course of the (ridiculously long) singleplayer experience.DJ_Lae

Well, that's good to know. As long as I can go to the options menu and make sure the "rewind" never shows up in my menus I suppose I'm okay with it. Now if only they'd allow me to actually turn off "retry."

[QUOTE="CakeBalls"][QUOTE="Toriko42"]Now I know why PD has delayed this so long, they've spent their dev time catching up to Forza :lol:Toriko42
because F3 was the first racing game to have it :|

Forza 3 was the first simulator to use it

Can't say that I'm suprised really asthe rewind feature seems to be the new thing for the racing genre. Makes sense really as it helps to make your game moreaccessible for the morecasual crowd and it won't hurt the hardcore group cause its an option they can choosenot to use if they so desire. So everybody wins.
