What exactly was their goal? :S

To release a game that receives good reviews? I think they did that.

Killzone 2 is a AAA title and I'm sure they like that. Whether the hype of sales got into their head or not, I am not sure. Killzone 2 didn't burst in sales like hyped, so I suppose it fails there.

It's a solid game which I occassionally play online.

Alpha-Male22

Their goal was to make the best game they could make at the time. I think they did just that.

One can probably say, they're goal was to beat HALO 3, in every department especially in the wow department which HALO combat evolved got when it was released on the original Xbox, sony wanted to turn the tables and dumped millions of dollars on a group of 150 team members, sony's plan din't go to well, I doubt they'll dump money into killzone 3, enjoy it cows the series ain't gonna get any better than this.

Sony won't need to "dump" much money on Killzone 3 development. The money went into creating a new engine. --- Killzone 2 is the best looking game on consoles and it comes with amazing gameplay. Very few genre innovations, but the entire package is AAA no doubt.

same gameplay everyone nags about (hesitation when you fire), I bet pc gamers won't even touch killzone 2.

Their goal was never to beat halo.

sony's goal was to beat HALO, it was evident with killzone 1 how they said it was going to be a HALO killer, I must admitt guerilla din't say that, but sony wanted it to be the HALO killer, hence they pumped millions of dollars into this year project of 150 developers, is it not evident ?

That was the medias fault. Sony or Guerilla never stated that. But since your so sure. Please get me a link.

Marketing from a publisher. Not a negative at all. You make it seem as if investing money into a new proprietary engine is a bad thing. Was it bad that Halo 3 took $30 million to make? Bungie has 150+ as well.

I'm a PC gamer and I "touch" KZ2 :?. That's irrelevant to the point of this thread, as well as what I stated.

--- Guerrilla Games made an amazing game. Sure the budget and development team was high, but the same can be said for many AAA games this generation.

Sony never thought nor would they have believed that Killzone 2 was going to "beat" Halo. The franchise's re-invigoration through this sequel was too new to attract as many people as Halo has. Sony never said--at all--that Killzone would be a "Halo killer." A European journalist not affiliated with the company made that remark years ago, and the Microsoft faithful have stuck to it like glue and allowed the anecdotal nature of the internet to pin it on Sony.

if their goal was to make an eye candy game then they succeeded.

if their goal was to make a game that was unique they failed misserably.

if their goal was to actually sell quite a bit they failed.

if their goal was to make a game that actually played good and did what it does which is generic good then they failed miserably.

If their goal was to sell ps3's well they failed cause the game hasn't helped close the gap.

Easily. They went from average to superb within 1 sequal.

I dont think there was no way KZ2 could have ever failed. Im guessing that whenever it looked crap, Sony just gave GG extra time and funds. So it would have continued untill they made it good.

Really, the only thing that could have been done better was marketing. There was ONE measly television ad, and it was a horrible way to promote the game. On top of that the ad's exposure wasn't that high. Killzone 2 is a game that could have sold much more than 1.8 million if handled properly.

That doesn't change the fact it's not selling as it should. I don't even recall a MGS ad but that sold like crazy.

Well I did it so long ago I forget my exact strategy. I remember I used a walk through from ps3trophies.org as a guide and did it almost the same as that. (One part he said go down and knife everyone, I was like yeah right, im not doing that.) Just try to progress as much as you can. The good thing is there is 3 save points throughout the fight so if you die you dont have to go back THAT far

I'm not saying it's bad, but when we look at the high profile games on other consoles and compare it .. then yea... not to mention the amount of money this game cost to develop and ship out, I don't think they saw much of a profit from it.

MGS4 had ads, besides it's an established franchise. It can easily sell by word of mouth. Not only that, it was bundled. Killzone is relatively unknown to the casual market. Marketing and multiple installments increase that exposure. KZ2 is recently bundled as well, so it's penetration should increase. Look at games like Halo and COD. They have tremendous ad campaigns and are established franchises. Majority of the owners are casual. Not the case with KZ2.

That is true, MGS is an established franchise, But a game like gears came along as a new IP and sold like crazy. I was expecting KZ 2 to be the PS3s gears type IP, literally flying off shelves, but so far it isn't living up to that.

Fair enough. But again I think it shows how much sony failed to actually push the game. Gears had the mad world trailer and a ton of promotional stuff. Like they had a contest for the biggest fan and they got to play with cliffy b. Guerilla had one giant building banner and a commercial

Well, they created the best looking game on consoles, redeemed themesleves for their flop of a first game andcreated an excellent AAA FPS which is very fun to play. I think they succeeded. Unless they wanted their game to sell like Halo or Gran Turismo.

That outlook would be Sony's fault in marketing. Not the games fault, though I'm not implying you mean that. KZ2 is def. the quality game that can sell upwards to 5 million. The profit GG and Sony got from PS3's development is more in-tune with the engine (licensing it) and future GG titles. As far as breaking even with software sales, we can't say as we don't know how much money Sony get's on each unit sold.

Yeah, I was hoping KZ2 could be the Gears of PS3 (concerning sales). This goes to show you how important marketing is.

I would say so considering it was one of the few FPS titles with one of the most fun campaigns since CoD2 and a BRILLIANT multiplayer. The only thing that brought it down for me was that you couldn't play as the helghast and there was no co-op.

Now I haven't actually played the game but here's my two cents.

It sold relatively well, was incredibly pretty and was a huge improvement over its predecessor. So, yeah, I think it reached at least some of its goals.

Killzone 2 only has graphics IMO. Gameplay was beyond extremely generic; your average linear run-and-gun shooter with poor story, stereotypical characters and bad voice acting. The multiplayer is overrated (again, IMO). Nothing I haven't seen, but not bad either. But what really destroyed the game was the terrible movement controls. I don't really know what they were trying to acheive there, but it ruined the entire point of the "FPS" part of the game.

Now I haven't actually played the game but here's my two cents.

It sold relatively well, was incredibly pretty and was a huge improvement over its predecessor. So, yeah, I think it reached at least some of its goals.

This is my post, too. Since I haven't played it either.

good game that looks great, lack of co-op was dissapointing since after all the big 360 franchises it's something i'm used to being in a modern shooter but hey, y'know you don't get everything you want all the time

KZ2 is a good game but its flaws make the game unbearable to a lot of gamers.

[QUOTE="HAZE-Unit"]

Well guerilla is giving access to all sony inhouse right?

I think so, i read somewhere this engine is going to be used in other games, I don't really remember though if that was about the uncharted 2 engine or KZ2 engine but I think Sony parties share alot of tech.

In the god of war 3 trailer, the sky looks somehow the same as in KZ2 so I think they learned to do that from GG.

look at the first moments in the trailer.

I think with the engines of both KZ2 and Uncharted Sony has two superb engines to work with.

When it comes to the engines, there were rumours that a new Syphon Filter is being made using the KZ2 engine. But thats still a massive rumour.

For me KZ2 was better than I expected. The SP, although not having the most memorable story, certainly was intense, that last level was absolutely nuts! And the MP was so well done, I loved the mix and match badge system, allowed for a lot of strategy and they had really well thought out clan system.

I absolutely cannot wait for KZ3, I just hope that they can make a better story, the KZ universe is very interesting. But they could definitely use a better story.

Graphics are good. Gameplay is fun, if not extremely generic.

It was an amazing improvement over its predeccesor and single-handedly made Killzone a respected franchise to build off of. So, yes. They did just fine.

Guerilla tried their best but the game is plain average in every caregory except graphics. They just don't have talent.

I'd say so. The game is great. It's taken many patches to perfect the game, though. At first the game's controls were really flawed, but now they're perfect. Gameplay is perfect, gunplay is amazing, visuals are great. KZ2 is a great shooter imo.
