Remember when HL2 came out, at the time it was the best shooter available.

Now that many games have adopted the innovations HL2 did and moved into more modern improvements I can see why some people may have difficulty appreciating it today.

That's not really the point of the question. Judging by your post, you seem to like twitchy, trigger-happy, run and gun FPS games. Games like Half Life are great for different reasons and appeal to different audiences.

The original Half-Life is up there with the best of the best - with Half-Life 2, I felt as though the physics and graphical presentation were the only really high marks. The AI is terrible to say the least, and the plot felt shallow along with most of the gameplay.

But... it's still a superb game. Time to go play some Garry's Mod 10 :)

Half Life 2 pulls of it's atmosphere in spades and the physics and pacing supports Half Life 2's backbone but at this very point you setup a contradiction which ill explain in the upcoming sentence.

The level design in Hal Life 2 consists of basically a stop and go scenario. High-intense combat at one point and than stops with a simple puzzle to help break up the pace.

add to that a main character with ZERO personality, and you have a completely bland game. its said that his most defining trait is his pase black framed geek glasses. also, the story is complete and utter nonsense, something that HL fanboys cling to with white knuckles.ninjaxams

This is where you setup your contradiction. First you go on a rant about how you dont care about the previous elements such as pacing, physics and facial animation that doesnt mean "jack" in the world of FPS design yet now your on a rant about the game's story? Is this NOT a contradiction? A character with zero personality? Gordon's personality is supposed to reflect that of the players, as if you were Gordon Freeman and believe it or not many people enjoy this aspect of Half Life.

but like i said above, shooting machanics and terrible ai are chief amoung the impotant fps design aspects. hl2 fails on many levels but by no means a bad game. just completely, and horribly overated...ninjaxams

I think Half Life one was LOADS better, especially Opposing Force.

The main flaw in Half Life 2 is that the AI just stands out in the open, receiving your bullets. Also, you can shoot them point blank with a shotgun, and they'll just stand there, no recoil. But I still enjoy it nonetheless.

Yea, I actually think the AI was better in the original halflife with the military, they also made the game alot more easy-er, even on the most difficult setting it's about equal to halflife on normal I think.

That said though, I loved fighting hunters in episode 2, those guys were more of a challenge.

Actually the shooting feels great in HL2. I was just playing it this morning and I realized that even though it's 4 year old now,the shooting feels more smooth than alot of shooting games I've played in the past year. Even when you move the mouse around and fire your gun,it feels so fast and fluid.

This might have been because I was playing at about 120 FPS,but then there are games like Halo 3 or Stalker that just came out last year where the shooting feels stiff (no offense to Stalker,my favorite game of last year). So yea I think Half Life 2 has some of the best shooting in any games TBH.

But I agree that it aint the best FPS ever,that goes to Half-Life 1.

All games have flaws. If you focus on the flaws and not the features, you'll miss out on a lot of great titles.
