Halo 3 is not a very mature game... which is why it doesn't appeal to me

Yeah, I guess it's not really a mature game. But it's still hella fun. That's the reason why I still play (though I must admit I haven't touched it in a while).

[QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"][QUOTE="anti_hero32"] popularity doesnt mean a game is better.Dystopian-X

It does with mainstream first person shooters. Like it or not, if a game came out as you claim which beat Halo 3 in both gameplay and online multiplayer it'd be absolutely huge. To say Resistance is better than Halo in both gameplay and online, to me, sounds like you dont know the difference between opinion and fact or you simply haven't played Halo.

Good games that could be even better than Halo 3 right now can be overlooked by different factors such as media coverage, fanbase and having halo as an already stablished big franchise, so the whole sales=the better game is flawed.

Actually, the quality of an online shooter usually is reflected in its sales.

I don't think there's any facts involved here. Halo>Resistance in these areas=opinion and vice-versa.

The fact that Halo 3 is generally a higher rated, better selling, more frequently played and held in higher regard. If we reduce ourselves to 'its my opinion so its ok' i could go throw up a baseless thread that Worms 3D is the best game ever made.

It often does. Look at Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In my opinion, that game is awesome and its sales are insane and a great deal play its online mode.

We both know that if Resistance were better than Halo or Call of Duty or Half-Life, it would have got a lot more attention. :) But I suppose they didn't find it too special...

yeah because we all know really great games have never slipped under the radar before with minimal play *cough*psychonauts*cough*snatcher*cough*

anyway tf2 is better than either, even in terms of story. and thats word to my momma

Resistance is different. It's a FPS. :) And Team Fortress 2 is not better than Halo.

Gratuitous f-bombs are usually aimed towards the lowest common denominator. Profanity is sophisticated and effective when used appropriately, but when it's just there for the sake of being there (gratuitious), it's usually aimed towards the juvenile crowd. There is some more nuanced toilet humor out there, but farts and poop and etc. used repeatedly for no reason=usually aimed towards the lowest common demonitor as well.

That being said, if you think he could be right, explain what you think the "lowest common denominator" is and tell me why you think Halo might fightthis category.

I personally think labeling Halo that way is unfair.

Tragic_Kingdom7

You made it look like the game is aimed towards a mature audience or isn't aimed at a juvenile one just because it lacks profanity and that kind of humor which is wrong and that guy could still be right since something that deals with pretty common topics blown to epic proportions can be aimed towards a less mature audience.

And I didn't say otherwise, but Halo 3 could have been the worst FPS ever and it would still have sold a lot based on certain factors.

Well, if somebody could make a good argument for "Worms 3D" being the best game ever made, I'd listen to them. I doubt that argument can be made though.

My point is that arguments are more important than just throwing out stuff like "most played, better selling" etc. I guess the higher-rated point could be somewhat valid if paired with other arguments.

Yeah, Halo 3 wins, no matter what. It had greater hype than Resistance. It sold more copies. It was better in terms of critical reception. It was the most played Xbox Live game in 2007 and 2008, despite serious Call of Duty rivalry. It was better in terms of public reception, presumably. It was the most played last week. Soon, it's 2 years old, but over 1 million unique gamers with Xbox Live still game it every day. :)

Maybe, but it certainly wouldn't have been the most played Xbox 360 game in 2007 or 2008, and a million people wouldn't play it today. But they do, because it's fun. :D

I see game development as an art and therefore an intrinsic property of games (as with art) is that they will appeal to some ad not to others. There is degree of absoluteness possible in grading games (think graphics technical, sound, fluid controls) but there's also the artisic side to consider. Since no game will appeal to everyone, and giving something a 10/10 impies it's perfect, I think no game deserves a 10; a 9.5 tops.

Completely agree. You hate Halo 3?

Never played it

But I never play multiplayer, so Halo's strength wouldn't really benefit me. As for the single player, well my preferenceisa more stroy driven approach, like Bioshock. (I'm not saying Halo's stroy sucks, I just don't know it).

I don't really see Halo as trying to portray itself as an overly mature title. It's trying to be more Michael Bay than elder Clint Eastwood as far as action goes... Actual mature people can enjoy that quite a bit, but the game itself? Meh, nothing stupendously mature about it.

I didn't say that Halo was aimed towards a "mature audience" because I don't think that Bungie really goes for "mature" or "kiddy" but something more universal and in-between.

As for you second point, even if Halo was aimed towards a "less mature" audience, that doesn't=lowest common demoninator.

I'm pretty sure he meant that younger audience as a lower common denominator, when it comes to mature/immature, they are.

You know, did any of you stop to think that part of being mature might be that you don't sit there and try and judge everything on the terms of "Is this mature enough for me?" That just reeks of a little kid trying to do what their big brother does, and shying away from anything that they think isn't cool enough for said big brother to do.

[QUOTE="SquatsAreAwesom"][QUOTE="Tragic_Kingdom7"] I think you can find alot better things to criticize about the game. Sorry to break it to you, but your criticisms are just awfulTragic_Kingdom7

Eh... since your entire argument is based on this: Just because a game portrays itself as being mature, does not mean it's actually mature.

Huh? What is my argument based on? It's quite iinteresting that you failed to respond to my laundy list of points (I was looking forward to seeing you explain your contradiction, but I guess it's not to be).

Anyway, you've still failed to competently explain what "mature" is. It can't be having "unique round characters" because as I explained, many childrens storys have unique round characters while many "mature" stories have flat generic characters. And it can't be not having a good story because a story being "mature" does not make it quality.

So whatconstitutes"maturity"? And why does it even matter?

Why would I expand upon all your points, when the premise of your rebuttal is invalid?

I think all 3 Halo games have a better storyline than Killzone 2 (even if prefer Killzone 2 as a game), but in the greater scheme of game storylines, I think Halo's storyline falls more into the category where Killzone is whereasBioshock's storyline falls into the Half-Life category.

Some people think it's cool to take the stance that virtually everything sucks. The Bioshock story wasn't completely original, but it did have some pretty solid twists to it and was very well told. Not to mention generally good writing carrying it along. Not the best story ever or anything, but quite good.

Yeah, I guess. I think that BioShock's story is pretty lame, generic and also tedious. I think that 2K Boston tried to copy Halo 3 in terms of being epic and exciting. :|

Tragic_Kingdom7

Why would I expand upon all your points, when the premise of your rebuttal is invalid?

So if the premise of my rebuttal is so invalid (you have not even explained to me what the premise of my rebuttal even is and you have failed to recognize that I hada variety of premises in my rebuttal), shouldn't you be able to knock my points out of the park?

This post I'm quoting is nothing more than you trying to raise the white flag in a way that makes you look like you came out on top when in reality, you just don't want to respond to points that damage your argument.

Wow dude, you're really full of yourself. Why don't you look back at the sentence I quoted? You're claiming victory... for whatever reason... based on a completely fallacious and tagent rebuttal.

BioShock has a good story now? :?

Shafftehr

.... .... .... are you serious?

Some people think it's cool to take the stance that virtually everything sucks. The Bioshock story wasn't completely original, but it did have some pretty solid twists to it and was very well told. Not to mention generally good writing carrying it along. Not the best story ever or anything, but quite good.

I agree with you. BioShock's story wasn't that good. And the game doesn't have an online mode, which isn't exactly captivating. :x

I really liked the setting to Bioshock, and up until Sander Cohen the game was going at a good pace, but after that the story just trailed off into decency (for lack of a better qualifier) which didn't measure up to Sander.

LOL. The sentence you quoted was the one in which I said that your criticisms were awful. That wasn't even a part of my rebuttal, but merely a stray comment. This confirms that you don't even understand my argument.

I'm not claiming victory because of I'm full of myself, I'm claiming victory based on the fact that you didn't respond to a single one of my points.

That's why I like Halo a bit. It's not my favorite gaming franchise, but I dig that they can be a mature game without actually getting immature, if you get what I'm saying.

Eh, to each their own. I thought it was quite good until you encounter... Well, I can't really say without spoiling for people who haven't played it. But, I thought it was good until you end up kindly smashing someone in the head with a golf club repeatedly and the focus of the game changes a fair bit. It trailed off after that, but, I found it a pretty tight story up until that.

But I said Bioshock's story WAS good, not that it wasn't. Doesn't have to be the best story ever told, or be absolutely perfect, for it to be good.

You fail at understanding the premise bring presented to you, and instead form an excessive list of points to rebuttal my post. However, none of the points are directly related to what I presented, but instead sound like you're just begging to argue. As such, you're obviously just trolling this thread for whatever reason, and when you were caught red handed, you just brush it off like it's irrelevant. Thx for trolling, come again.

I think we can all agree on that. When the antagonist changes from one of the best ever, to complete mediocrity, it was quite dissapointing.

hahahahahahaha!!! Tons of developers try to make their game "epic and exciting"and somehow you think they were tying to copy Halo's "epicness" and "excitement"? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. I suppose Kojima was trying to copy Halo 2 by making MGS4 epic and exciting too? :roll:You do realize that Halo is not the only "epic" and "exciting" game out there, right? It's like you totally ignore the fact that Bioshock was way different in terms of environment, characters, story, but 2k copied "epicness" and "excitment"? L-O-freaking-L.

Good lord.

This, I'd say the plot got bad even before that.

Another problem with it is that too much of the plot relied heavily on the info in the diary entries. I think this is an awful way of telling the plot, or hiding too many key parts.

No, that was not what I meant. I remember playing through BioShock when it was released before Halo 3. I thought the game was pretty scary, but I remember thinking that it wasn't that impressive since Halo 3 would be released. I wasn't too impressed and I remember easily thinking that they tried to make the game as imposing as Halo 3. Well, nevermind. I hope BioShock 2 will have an online mode and a better campaign mode.

could be worse, could be gears of war

that is some infantile stuff, it's not even subtle about who it's appealing to

Verge_6

I'm pretty sure Gears never really took itself seriously in the characterization department, either. I mean, they hired John Di Maggio to voice the main character...that alone should tell you something

So? The Gears of War guys are awesome. The characters don't need to be deep in order to make the game great. ;)
