It does with mainstream first person shooters. Like it or not, if a game came out as you claim which beat Halo 3 in both gameplay and online multiplayer it'd be absolutely huge. To say Resistance is better than Halo in both gameplay and online, to me, sounds like you dont know the difference between opinion and fact or you simply haven't played Halo. Good games that could be even better than Halo 3 right now can be overlooked by different factors such as media coverage, fanbase and having halo as an already stablished big franchise, so the whole sales=the better game is flawed.[QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"][QUOTE="anti_hero32"] popularity doesnt mean a game is better.Dystopian-X
Actually, the quality of an online shooter usually is reflected in its sales.
The fact that Halo 3 is generally a higher rated, better selling, more frequently played and held in higher regard. If we reduce ourselves to 'its my opinion so its ok' i could go throw up a baseless thread that Worms 3D is the best game ever made."It does with mainstream first person shooters. It often does. Look at Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In my opinion, that game is awesome and its sales are insane and a great deal play its online mode.
We both know that if Resistance were better than Halo or Call of Duty or Half-Life, it would have got a lot more attention. :) But I suppose they didn't find it too special...
yeah because we all know really great games have never slipped under the radar before with minimal play *cough*psychonauts*cough*snatcher*cough*
anyway tf2 is better than either, even in terms of story. and thats word to my momma
Resistance is different. It's a FPS. :) And Team Fortress 2 is not better than Halo.
Yeah, I guess it's not really a mature game. But it's still hella fun. That's the reason why I still play (though I must admit I haven't touched it in a while). killerfistHell, I haven't given Halo 3 a serious playthrough (at least a two hour sit time) in over a year...but I still love the franchise.

Yeah, crazy things occur when you play its online mode.
Team Fortress 2 is on par with Halo if you ask me. Opinion would sway it.And Team Fortress 2 is not better than Halo.

Gratuitous f-bombs are usually aimed towards the lowest common denominator. Profanity is sophisticated and effective when used appropriately, but when it's just there for the sake of being there (gratuitious), it's usually aimed towards the juvenile crowd. There is some more nuanced toilet humor out there, but farts and poop and etc. used repeatedly for no reason=usually aimed towards the lowest common demonitor as well. You made it look like the game is aimed towards a mature audience or isn't aimed at a juvenile one just because it lacks profanity and that kind of humor which is wrong and that guy could still be right since something that deals with pretty common topics blown to epic proportions can be aimed towards a less mature audience. That being said, if you think he could be right, explain what you think the "lowest common denominator" is and tell me why you think Halo might fightthis category.
I personally think labeling Halo that way is unfair.

Well, if somebody could make a good argument for "Worms 3D" being the best game ever made, I'd listen to them. I doubt that argument can be made though.
My point is that arguments are more important than just throwing out stuff like "most played, better selling" etc. I guess the higher-rated point could be somewhat valid if paired with other arguments.

Yeah, Halo 3 wins, no matter what. It had greater hype than Resistance. It sold more copies. It was better in terms of critical reception. It was the most played Xbox Live game in 2007 and 2008, despite serious Call of Duty rivalry. It was better in terms of public reception, presumably. It was the most played last week. Soon, it's 2 years old, but over 1 million unique gamers with Xbox Live still game it every day. :)

I see game development as an art and therefore an intrinsic property of games (as with art) is that they will appeal to some ad not to others. There is degree of absoluteness possible in grading games (think graphics technical, sound, fluid controls) but there's also the artisic side to consider. Since no game will appeal to everyone, and giving something a 10/10 impies it's perfect, I think no game deserves a 10; a 9.5 tops.
Completely agree. You hate Halo 3?
Never played it
But I never play multiplayer, so Halo's strength wouldn't really benefit me. As for the single player, well my preferenceisa more stroy driven approach, like Bioshock. (I'm not saying Halo's stroy sucks, I just don't know it).

I didn't say that Halo was aimed towards a "mature audience" because I don't think that Bungie really goes for "mature" or "kiddy" but something more universal and in-between.
As for you second point, even if Halo was aimed towards a "less mature" audience, that doesn't=lowest common demoninator.

I'm pretty sure he meant that younger audience as a lower common denominator, when it comes to mature/immature, they are.You know, did any of you stop to think that part of being mature might be that you don't sit there and try and judge everything on the terms of "Is this mature enough for me?" That just reeks of a little kid trying to do what their big brother does, and shying away from anything that they think isn't cool enough for said big brother to do.Shafftehr

Anyway, you've still failed to competently explain what "mature" is. It can't be having "unique round characters" because as I explained, many childrens storys have unique round characters while many "mature" stories have flat generic characters. And it can't be not having a good story because a story being "mature" does not make it quality.
So whatconstitutes"maturity"? And why does it even matter?
Why would I expand upon all your points, when the premise of your rebuttal is invalid?Halo isn't even trying to be mature. Just fun and slightly realistic. And I don't know any shooter outside of Bioshock that has a good story.

Another problem with it is that too much of the plot relied heavily on the info in the diary entries. I think this is an awful way of telling the plot, or hiding too many key parts.

No, that was not what I meant. I remember playing through BioShock when it was released before Halo 3. I thought the game was pretty scary, but I remember thinking that it wasn't that impressive since Halo 3 would be released. I wasn't too impressed and I remember easily thinking that they tried to make the game as imposing as Halo 3. Well, nevermind. I hope BioShock 2 will have an online mode and a better campaign mode.

So? The Gears of War guys are awesome. The characters don't need to be deep in order to make the game great. ;)
