because the article was about some new features that halo: reach will have and that it will have a new engine unlike odst. it's still nothing but speculation and the game is at least one year away from launch but some info is better than no info, even if it turns out to be wrong.

looks like the hermits got tired of sounding like broken records. it's almost an unwritten rule in system wars that crysis wins all graphics king threads that forget to mention "console" in the title. it simply wins by default.

funny, cows did this in 2005 with a cgi trailer for killzone 2, lair, and gt5. cows continue to do this today with gt5, and for the past 4 years, not a single gameplay video or picture ever emerged from gt5, only more cgi videos, which btw, was comprised mostly of the same video that polyphony showed off in 2005, including nascar.
proof in this link
What was that video supposed to prove?
Edit: I find your comparison funny, because it's true. Lemmings are now as pathetic as cows were when they believed CG videos produced before their console had even released. Tall drop to take.

that if you compare that video from e3 2005 to the gt 5 video from e3 2009, you'll see that all of the nascar footage was from 4 years ago. it's nothing new yet the cows bring it up constantly saying "omgz, teh gt5 has teh nazcarz!! forza who?" it also proves that most cows have poor memory because they were shown something similar in 2005 and then again in 2009 and hail it like something new.

It seems like you're the one with the poor memory here. From : "you'll see that all of the nascar footage was from 4 years ago." To : "and one very similar to it in the e3 2009 trailer" That's all they are, similar scenes. First the 2005 trailer used assets from GT4 and doesn't even use Nascar vehicles for the scene, second the differences are clear from the stage, to the cars used, even to the colour of the gear worn by the pit crew. It's actually painfully obvious from one viewing. Similar cinematography, yep. The same footage? No.The FACT is PS3 can not achieve what Halo Reach will achieve. The 360 GPU will finally start really flexing on the outdated RSX.
Bottom line here people is the 360 GPU has DX9.5 and DX10 features. Sorry to say but the RSX does not and is out dated in comparison. We will not see graphics that are unattainable by the PS3.
So now we see why MS said do not worry just wait we have games that are going to take over in the graphics dept.

No.but the fact still stands that what was shown off at e3 2009 was almost exactly what was shown off at e3 2005. the differences in color, camera angles, and rally, not withstanding, the footage of both are essentially the same. of course they are no longer using gt4 assets in HD. it's been in development for 4 years, possibly more. if it were to have been gt4hd, the game would have been out years ago. rather, poly chose to hold off releasing the game and continuing to improve it everytime they see a competing racing game.

The RSX can't do direct x because it's a microsoft technology. That's like saying the xbox can't do opengl. But anyway, the same thing could be said about future ps3 games. the xbox has been out a year longer than the ps3 and now is that it's unlocking potential of the 360? If anyone's unlocking potential it's the ps3 and sony has the screenshots to prove it with uncharted 2 and God of War 3. This is just expected super halo hype that microsoft loves to shovel early on to get people to buy. I'll wait for the barrage of CGI trailers followed by disappointing graphics on launch before saying it's king of anything.

Does Halo have a story?d3d 10 wasn't the greatest improvement to the directx architecture, it was merely the biggest. d3d 10 was pretty much out performed by dx 9 in gaming. sure improvements have been made, but it was not the huge improvement that ms claimed it to be. furthermore, the reason most pc games aren't designed for d3d 10 exclusively, or from the ground up, is because it would divide their userbase and those without vista/d3d 10 would be unable to play the game. yes, d3d 10 was a selling point of vista, which is why MS themselves marketed d3d 10 to the gaming market to get them upgrade to vista for it's "improved performance".
d3d 11 is not a subset of d3d 10, it's a superset of d3d 10.1. it contains all of the improvements and features of d3d 10.1 and adds tessellation, shader model 5, compute shaders, and mutlithreaded rendering. the later two can be used fully by even dx 9 hardware but tessellation and sm5 require d3d 11 hardware.
cowgriller
D3D 10 WAS the greatest improvement.
And you are right, developers aren't willing to divide their userbase.
But, the "improved performance with D3D 10 wouldn't have been a myth if developers had actually developed games to support DX10 natively, instead of halfway supporting it. MS marketed DX10 as one advantage of Vista, but it wasn't entirely marketing(like you were making it out to be). DX10 got a bad rep because developers didn't support it for financial reasons. But, as an API, it is a huge improvement over DX9 in every way.
Also, you are right. I made a slight mistake. DX10.1 is a subset of DX10. And then DX11 is a superset of DX10.1. And I said that Tessellation and other features would require DX11 hardware, but that the rest was compatible with older cards. ATi also has an advantage in that they have included Tessellators in their cards for years.

with windows 7 and d3d 11 around the corner, devs can fully take advantage of d3d 10 without having to cater to dx9/windows xp. hopefully, if windows 7 becomes wildly popular from day one. devs will move onto d3d 11 altogether.
This kinda reminds me of watching a halo 3 dev video that was available on xbox live before Halo 3 launched. Strait from the devs mouth(referring to the first CGI trailer with Master Chief looking all shiny and detailed) he said "we're going to be doing this with the game engine!"
Look how that turned out. Now here we are with another Halo game on 360 and more promises that won't be met.
And a GPU is a pretty straight forward peice of hardware. It's not something you just all of a sudden get amazing results from nearly 4 years after launch.
Look at Gears and Gears 2. They were made by Epic, which is known for pushing graphics to the max. After 2 years, Gears 2 made hardly any improvements over the first Gears.
The 360 uses a general purpose CPU and a straight forward GPU. Just like with the original Xbox, it uses basic hardware. We have not and will not see devs making "breakthroughs" in performance this late in the consoles life. There simply are no special tricks to be learned on standard hardware. Look at the first and last games that launched on Xbox, hardly any difference in graphics.

Hopefully... I can't wait to see developers making good use of Geometry Shaders, Shader Model 5.0, Compute Shaders, Hardware Tessellation, and Instancing 2.0. Crytek already did a tiny bit of messing around with Geometry Shaders, but I want to see what they can really do. And Compute Shaders should be absolutely insane. Tessellation has taken way too long to be actually implemented and used, so that should be good. And Instancing 2.0 is an often underappreciated DX10 feature that could have a huge impact on graphics.
Hopefully developers end up surprising us with some stunning tech.
[QUOTE="cowgriller"][QUOTE="double_heist"] Does Halo have a story?double_heist
was that a serious question?
Yes.yes halo does have a story. it got a bit conveluted around halo 2 but seemed to have tried to return to it's roots in the third installment.
in short:
the human species is at war with an allied alien force known as the covenant. the covenant attack some of the human outlying colonies and triggered a response/war from the UN. the UN sent the navy, the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) in an effort to stamp out the covenant and rebuild the colonies. at first the war went well but the covenant became stronger and attacked earth itself. during an invasion of the carrier, the pillar of autumn, the master chief was awoken from cryo-sleep to fight them while the ship was abandoned. the cheif got to a pod before the pillar went down and he and the unsc troops land on an unknown and uncharted ring world, halo. the covenant, as it turns out were in halo believining that it was some religious artifact that could send them to heaven. turns out it was a weapon of unknown origin. while the chief and the marines tried to find a way to the center of the ring to the control room, they were attacked by an alien species known as the flood. after learning about the flood, halo, and the builders of it, the forerunners, the chief and cortana came up with the best idea to kill off the covenant and the flood before the flood could spread. overload the pillar's drive core and blow halo to pieces.
during halo 2m we were met with another side of the story. the covenant side. the elite that was charged with halo's safety was stripped of his title and tortured. the elite's lost their status as the protectors of the profits and a new enemy was introduced. the brutes. the elite that ws tortured was given reprieve and a chance to defend himself and became to arbiter. at around this time, the elite invaded earth and laid waste to it. the chief landed on earth to fight the covenant and kill the prophets. when the prophets and the covenant were leaving earth, they went into slip-space (hyper-drive) inside the earth atmosphere just over a city and caused a massive explosion that ruined the city. (this were halo: odst takes place, just after the jump). the unsc with the chief went through a portal that the covenant opened up and ended up just outside another halo ring. turns out, there 7 rings. the chief only destroyed one. the covenant tried to find a way to activate all the rings simultaneously to "go on the great journey" as they put it. this inevitably lead them to a giant pyramid shaped object, which was an ancient forerunner ship. the ship flow on autopilot to a control room back on earth.
this leads to halo 3. the chief jumps off the ship just as it's touching down near the covenant dig site in new mombosa africa. after leading through a campaign in the jungle and the city just outside the dig site, he makes his way to the outside rim of the 3 mile wide (all of which is rendered in the game) hole in the ground. the hole was a set of doors and a connected to the forerunner ship the chief came in on, opened a portal in the sky that leads to the ark, the facility that can fire all the rings at once. the rings themselves are weapons to kill off the flood. rather than killing the flood itself, the rings kill off the floods food source, all organic life in the galaxy. the unsc with the chief and the elites which splintered from the covenant in halo 2, went through the portal to kill off the third prophet and stop him from firing the rings. after doing so, he inadvertently pissed off the gravemind, a hive-mind type of creature created by the consolidation of individual flood members. he needed a way to kill off the gravemind and the flood once and for all. so as he did in the first game, he overloaded the frigates dirve core and blow the ring, and possibly the ark itself, to hell. he, cortana ( an ai program) and the arbiter narrowly escapes and passed through the portal just as it closed. the rear end of the frigate he was in broke off and the arbiter in the from thalf land safely in earth. he was trapped in space in half a frigate with cortana. he went into cryo-sleep and told cortana "wake me...when you need me." cortana sets off a beacon to let the unsc know they were alive and needed pick up. if you beat the game on the legendary difficulty, you get a longer cutscene at the end the shows a burnt planet.
some have speculated the planet to be onyx, the planet in the game marathon. one can think it's reach or harvest but reach was destroyed years before the chief was even born. bungie never said anything.
i did left a lot of detail pertaining to characters and events but you'll have to play the series to find them out.
