Ultima IV may not be my favorite RPG, but I think its the best and the most important. Its morality system and its story concept still amaze to this day, even surpassing the morality systems of today. It set up one of the greatest RPG settings of all time, if not the greatest. It is the first RPG that truly mattered. Instead of bopping a bad guy, its about becoming the great good, a quest of enlightenment. To win the game you must be virtous in the virtues of honesty, compassion, valor, justice, sacrifice, honor, spirituality, and humility. While questing for artifacts that open the way to the abyss, the hero must achieve avatarhood by performing right actions and not performing the wrong ones. Its one of the few RPGs where killing everything that attacks you is bad, especially if they run.
This is one of the first worlds to be truly fleshed out, have its own lore, and set the standards for Ultima V, VI, and the two parts of VII, which are also all time greats. The party members were also the first fully realized characters with their own backstories and their own personalities, which would carry them throughout the series.
Its amazing that this game as came out in 1985, even before the first JRPGs as well as the SSI Gold Box landed, and still be a lot deeper and more meaningful then those games for 5 or 6 more years.
While I may like some other RPGs better, maybe even Ultima VII, this game is way too important to not call, the greatest RPG ever made.
