EDIT: since people seem to have a D in reading comprehensiom, THIS IS NOT TO BASH SONY. this is a simple question: What have sony done for the industry? please name me some. I have recived some answers, but apparantly it seems that cows are going berserk. i hope this clears up any misunderstanding, thank you.

first, lets look at nintendos, standards for the gaming industry: modern controllers, 360 degrees 3d platforming, shoulder buttons, lock on, wireless controllers, motion controls as a standard, backwards compatibility, etc...

now MS: HD graphics and simple, viable online. ok, not a big list for MS, but they're still new to gaming.

EDIT: MS also broutgh in hard drives.

only one thing: CD disc for games.

EDITx3: also these: DVD discs and blu-ray discs. thanks for that.

EDITx4: oh and home button goes to sony, and so does having 2 analog sticks

really what have they done? dualshock controller?no. playstaion home?don't make me laugh.

please, name me some.

EDITx2: i'm talking about consoles.

made an affordable, developer friendly console, that used discs and had enough space to store games in the 5th generation when Sega and Nintendo completely blew it with their clunky, hard to develop for consoles. The ps2 was one of the biggest reasons as to why DVDs took off like they did and same goes for bluray. Sony has done alot and really picked up the slack with mountains of amazing games the past two generations when most others were really just screwing up left and right.

2 of those have nothing to do with gaming, and the controller part is subjective. I for one think the GCN controller is the best ever made. Eyetoy was pretty awesome though, in my opinion anyway.

Didn't they popularize the use of CDs for video gaming? I know Sega Saturn did it first but it had a bigger impact on the PS1.

Really? How bout this. Sony introduced CD, DVD and Blu-Ray optical storage devices that has moved gaming forward. Before the release of the Playstation 1 there was nintendo 64, with the same ole same ole mario bros. they even had some game where you parachuted, could fly and etc. Really cool stuff at the time, but then came my first real game ever. The game that started it all for me. Resident evil. Playing games since early 1978 I had never before seen anything like it. It was indescibable, other than it blew my mind. The real question should be what has PS3 and 360done this generation. Not much really, but microsoft is just as guilty. Heck steam is leagues and bounds better than PS3 and 360 when it comes to online store. I would argue the same for the PS3 too, both you can play online for free which for me is a deal breaker. Microsoft is trying to get you to pay for online just to play games and it's features that I have no use for.

So what has microsoft done for gaming? They have made a pay to play online, plus pay more for an un-finishedgame that you have already bought (known as DLC). Microsoft has also made it standard to make an unreliable console that to this day is breaking down. So in my mind microsoft is far worse than sony. DOn't try to kid yourself buddy, Microsoft is making nickeling and diming worse and when the day comes that Digital Distribution is the norm microsoft will have all it needs to monopolize the poor souls who bought its console. Not saying sony will be any better, but as far as history goes it will be microsoft the one that will charge for stupid stuff that should be free.

Why dismiss it? It was the first at something wasn't it? Is it because it hurts your argument? Anyway, Sony introduced CD's, DVD's and Blurays to gaming allowing games to be bigger. The first to have HDMI and media card drives built into a console. A camera that can track movements in 2d space. 3D Gaming. Ability to share media with ANY application you want from ANY computer (including macs and linux) Allowed a second OS to be installed on their product for development training on the cell First console to be a part of Folding@Home which helps research against cancer. Now try to nit pick my list.

MS brought HDD into consoles as standard, something essential nowadays. Sony has done one thing right, to copy. 360 doesent have HDD as standard...

And Sony made the Dualshock/Dual Analog controller witch basicaly evreyone copies nowerdays (evrey console has a 2 analog stick, 4 shoulder button, rumble enabled, d-pad, 4 control buttons layout controller), first console with a CD disc as standard media format, cheap and easy to manufacture console etc.

And MS didnt make online play, Dreamcast had that before it, and PS2 already had HD games (Gran Turismo 4)

You can't NOT include the PC ... /facepalm Your topic title includes the words GAMING INDUSTRY, something which the PC started and wholly participates in. You did not state console industry. And by the way setting standards is across the board regardless on mediums. You include cars in the first seatbelts even when including vans. Its not like you point fingers at the first Van building company to include a seatbelt standard only in the Van industry. You include those vehicles in with the rest.

[QUOTE="stereointegrity"][QUOTE="gamewhat"]Really?

PS1 came before the N64 and ninty did not have any 3D platformers before Crash Bandicoot i think?

N64 launched with super mario 64 and pilotwings

[QUOTE="gamedude234"]

first, lets look at nintendos, standards for the gaming industry: modern controllers, 360 degrees 3d platforming, shoulder buttons, lock on, wireless controllers, motion controls as a standardetc...

now MS: online, HD graphics. ok, not a big list for MS, but they're still new to gaming. for sony there is no excuse.

only one thing: CD disc for games.

really what have they done? dualshock controller?no. playstaion home?don't make me laugh.

please, name me some.

CD's as a game medium was first introduced by Sega and TurboGrafx16, in the form of peripherals. The first console to use CD as the primary medium, and drive already built in, was 3DO. The same console which in fact brought in the 3D era of gaming.

You cry that it was MS which "introduced unreliable hardware?" Actually Sony beat them to that with PS2 and its DRE issues.

And while Sega was the first to introduce online to consoles in the Dreamcast, it was MS that made it a viable service with a unified structure that established a standard for connectivity between friends and making it easy for games to have online play under one umbrella. Its this format which paved the way for how PS3 now structures their online model.

[QUOTE="agesyrh"] Yeah, clearly a sony hater, i have seen other threads when he hates on sony or ps3,but doesn't know what he is saying.agesyrh

thats usually when you make threads such as: mario overrated, halo overrated.. etc..

Nah, it is also when you made that thread about what system wars has to learn and accept. You were totally biased towards 360 and wii.

where going off topic. last reply to that: because this forum is overrun by cows.

[QUOTE="themyth01"] MS brought HDD into consoles as standard, something essential nowadays. Sony has done one thing right, to copy. They copied the 360 controller with their Home button, they copied Wii's motion controls, they copied XBOX HDD in every console, they're copying XLIVE... but hey it's not a problem really, as long as you provide the goods, all is well. white_sox
The PSP has a home button, in fact the button is actually called "home".

that is true....they were the first with a home button

Nintendo did the most cuz they are the oldest

Sony did a hell of a lot to bring Consoles into the 21st century with the PS1

Microsoft did squat... All it did was make evrey company want to squeese evrey penny out of evrey game, evrey accesory, evrey console etc. at the cost of gamers.
With M$ we got Pay to play online, DLCs, overpriced consoles and accesories etc.
