agesyrh

MS started it and made it standard?

Actually pc started it, but the point has been made that sony made good and important contributions to gaming :)

well the pc didnt make it standard for gaming the pc made it standard because thats how it holds all its files...u dont need an HDD to play games on consoles but besides that fact the TC didnt want to include PC

Also the button sensitivity thing that the ps2 had. Where depending on how slightly you pressed a button something would happen. Was sony the first to do that?

Most of what you said is true about Sony but not CD's. Anymore they are the pioneers when it comes to new media based games, even if that is to push other divisions. I was going to say they brought memory cards but after some research found out they didn't.

well, he said that there have been dual analog sticks for every controller since the dualshock... but thats not true, because the wii-mote doesn't have dual-analog sticks. fact

stereointegrity

Then how is an in-built hard drive a standard?

MS started it and made it standard?

Well I suppose you could consider the flash memory in the Wii and the Arcade equivalent to making internal storage a standard I guess...

But TC seemed to be trying to imply the Wiimote lacking dual analog made it "not standard."

Also TC four face buttons is exactly what "four face buttons" implies. See above picture of Wii classic controller. The SNES controller had 4 as well, back in the day, but then it wasn't really "standard" until this gen.

ill say it again everything that the TC listed, everything that people keep bringing up whether its for sony or not, is pretty much "standard" on one console, and thats the ps3 i say "pretty much" because all consoles except for the 1st gen (20 and 60) and 2nd gen (80) lack ps2 support but still have ps1 support

first, lets look at nintendos, standards for the gaming industry: modern controllers, 360 degrees 3d platforming, shoulder buttons, lock on, wireless controllers, motion controls as a standard, backwards compatibility, etc...

now MS: HD graphics and simple, viable online. ok, not a big list for MS, but they're still new to gaming.

EDIT: MS also broutgh in hard drives.

only one thing: CD disc for games.

EDITx3: also these: DVD discs and blu-ray discs. thanks for that.

EDITx4: oh and home button goes to sony, and so does having 2 analog sticks

really what have they done? dualshock controller?no. playstaion home?don't make me laugh.

please, name me some.

EDITx2: i'm talking about consoles.

gamedude234

I wouldn't say MS brought in hard drives or made them standard. The 360 arcade unit does not have a built in hard drive, and so is not considered a standard for gaming on the 360. I actually had a hard drive in my ps2 for games like ffxi online. All ps2s except for the slim models had a storage space for hard drives. Plus if anyone made hard drives a standard for gaming it would be sony, considering that EVERY PS3 comes with a hard drive.

Then theres the disc formats that each playstation has offered. (CD, DVD, Blu-Ray)

Add Dual Analog, which is considered standard among the ps3 and 360.(how else would you have played fps on them?)

Pressure sensitive face buttons on the ps2. (acceleration/deceleration on games like gran turismo. Aiming and firing, or using certain CQC moves in the MGS games)

Sony has contributed plenty to gaming. Get over it. Some of the things i posted have been posted in other posts, but they're worth repeating.

Sony: -Dual Analog layout
-Home button
-CD/DVD/BD
-PS2 was the first console that could also play movies, paving the way for Consoles as home entertainment systems not just gaming systems

Well seeing as how the Wii used the principles of Sony's Eye toy as the basis for the entire console, id say that they have done something; not to mention project Natal is just a perfected version of the Eye toy. So the answer is yes :D

It seems the edits to your post prove that Sony has done more than you claim it has done. I'm not bashing MS, but Sony has done much more than MS to influence the market when it comes to consoles. (says nothing about the quality, I'm not saying anything bad about MS). CD format on consoles is the biggest point here, and it's huge: every console is using discs now, thanks to how popular they became on the Playstation. Dual analog sticks came first with the Dualshock, and I think it had the first in-built rumble. Blu-Ray is Sony's large influence atm, seeing as MS is possibly going Blu-Ray in the future as well. Many genre-changing and otherwise influential games have been Sony exclusives, for instance Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII, LittleBigPlanet, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy X, Demon's Souls and many others. Playstation 2 was also the first console to play movies, which is now a standard for most home consoles. The Eyetoy is a blatant inspiration for Natal, which is essentially a more advanced Eyetoy. The home button is also Sony's idea. Sony has been a huge influence on the gaming industry, it would be silly to deny it. Playstation won the console wars way back when, the same with the Playstation 2. I have no idea who will ultimately win this one, but Sony has cemented its place in gaming history.

Not only Nintendo stand's locomotive of progressing gaming industry, I will say more - Nintendo, a couple with Microsoft is not ashamed to borrow ideas from Sony.

And so, what the Sony brought on the console market:

1.DVD to consoles. What then took over Nintendo and Microsoft.

2.Vertical position of the console. Also it was taken over Nintendo and Microsoft, without remorse.

3.Two analog stick.Nintendo and Microsoft, too, were quick to steal the idea.

4.Firmware upgrades, first appeared in the PSP have been copied by everyone else.

5.The original management began with the camera AyToy, an idea which has taken over the Microsoft (Natal).

6.Hard drive in consoles.First console with the connector under the hard drive was the PlayStation 2.

7.The first joystick with 2lower handles became DualShok.

8.USB port first appeared in the PlayStation 2, as an optical output and an Ethernet port.

9.Brought to the PS3 console HDMI and BluRay. You'll see, it will become standard for all next-generation consoles.

10.Ability to watch DVD movies on the console first appeared with the PlayStation 2.

11.The first game console entirely in Russian, became MediEvil 2, publisher Sony.

12.PSPGo first handheld console with anti-glare screen (I assure you from this moment such screens will become standard for portable consoles).A first PSP handheld console with games on disks and analog stick.

13.PlayStation Home first 3D online service.

...list goes on for a long time.Sony really brought a lot. Learn competitors.

And I'm not implying that you are. I'm simply saying that ignoring Sony's influence, no matter who does so, would be silly. And as you posted a thread asking about Sony's influence, it seems prompt to point out its innovations. There shouldn't be a need to read older comments, seeing as your opinion should be showed in the very first post of the thread.

[QUOTE="CleanNJerk"]Sony shuttered the reign of Sega & introduced disc based gaming. Sixaxis, also the fact that we are still using such a historical controller 3 generations old is a statement in it's own. First & only Blu-ray gaming console is the PS3. First DD only portable gaming device. Released the most innovative PS3 game to date(Little Big Planet), some of the best games of all time are a huge contribution of the Playstation 1 & 2, & now 3. First successful & fun 60 person multiplayer mode on consoles. BTW God of War alone set a standard for all action/adventure titles. Great comeback on the once low selling PS3. Re-modeled PS3 created a huge surplus for the gaming industry. & believe me i just pulled this crap out of my *** Sony is great. /thread

Just to add im not sure about the Sega Saturn / Dream Cast but the PS2 had a Hard Drive ability on it for FF11 and perhaps other games so that beats MS releasing the HardDrive for the 360 1st....

Inventions of PlayStation

/threadCleanNJerk

If we're talking strictly innovation then Sony hasn't really done much for gaming but the same could be said about many of the innovation that Nintendo has claimed to have brought to gaming.

N64 was not the first system with an analog-stick, Vectrex had one back in 1982.

Many people consider the wave-bird to be the first first party wire-less controller which is false. Sega had one back in 1993 for the Mega Drive.

The D-pad was not an invention from Nintendo either as the Milton Bradley Company released that first.

The Gameboy was not the first handheld of it's kind, the Microvision was.

yeah but you're also not taking into account what people have said and posting it into the OP or if you are, you are discreditting it. Answer this now: after all these pages of replies, do you still stand by your original opinion that the playstation didn't contribute anything? Yes or no answer will suffice :)

EDIT: since people seem to have a D in reading comprehensiom, THIS IS NOT TO BASH SONY. this is a simple question: What have sony done for the industry? please name me some. I have recived some answers, but apparantly it seems that cows are going berserk. i hope this clears up any misunderstanding, thank you.

first, lets look at nintendos, standards for the gaming industry: modern controllers, 360 degrees 3d platforming, shoulder buttons, lock on, wireless controllers, motion controls as a standard, backwards compatibility, etc...

now MS: HD graphics and simple, viable online. ok, not a big list for MS, but they're still new to gaming.

EDITx2: i'm talking about consoles.

gamedude234

The fat ps2 had a expansion slot for Harddrives. Before the xbox existed.

Dreamcast had online.

I fail too see how MS was the one setting the standard for HD gaming on consoles, i mean it had ZERO effect on other consoles designs.

The ps3 was going to be HD anyway.

There were 3rd party wireless controllers before Nintendo began using them.

I chuckled a bit - good one.

I think the duel analog and well, the PS1 sorta ushered in the polygon filled 3D fighting games on consoles - forget the name of that fighter that launched with PS1 but I think because of it many Sega fans went for the PS1 over the 2D sprite powerhouse know as the Saturn.

Oh and most responsible for the switch from cartridge based to CD based home VG's.
