Just thought I'd clear this up as there seems to be some confusion over the recently released screenshots:

CGI, E3 2005, opening scene:

Real-time cutscene screenshot from the recently released "cinematic production" video:

Though released recently, this build is not the current build. Even though they made the production video awhile ago, Sony had not allowed its release until a few days ago.

Ninja Peonic: "Just because you saw the other images this week, doesn't mean we made them this week."

Ninja Tameem: "It all comes down to lighting, dof tweaking and blend-shape tweaking none of which took place for the "Cinematic Production" teaser."

Real-time cutscene screenshot released today, captured from the game build as of yesterday:

Ninja Peonic: "The image released today was captured yesterday."

But the key question is: will the game look like that during gameplay?

Tameem's response:

"The DOF in-game is good but not THAT good. Better specular on the eyes is something we are working on and other techy bits to help improve the lighting response on the blend-shapes. If these come together, then the layman should not be able to distinguish that screenshot from the final result. Fingers crossed!!!"

So, the game is still a work in progress, but they've made tremendous advancements. And the improvement of the quality of real-time cinematics means a corresponding improvement in in-game graphics. However, do not expect in-game graphics to completely match the real-time cutscenes. However, as Tameem said, if he pulls out all the tricks, hopefully we won't be able to tell too much of a difference.

Hope that clears things up :)

The pic up top is old. The pic in the middle will be representative of in-game, gameplay graphics. The pic on the bottom is in-game cutscene ala Metal Gear Solid, but touched up a bit to make a nice wallpaper.

So that is basically what they are aiming for? Awesome, if they pull it off this game will be even more incredible. Microsoft lost a really good opportunity with this game...

I like the bottom picture better. The face looks more realistic to me. The weeds or grass in the background doesn't look too great though.

This game will be epic and cinematic to a grand level no doubt - but I just hope that the actual gameplay mechanics are fun and that the story is good.

I want deep characters. I want weapons that are customizable like the Onimusha series. I want to be able to actually play those scenes with hundreds of guys running around. I want the game to be longer than 2 hours lol. I hope that they can deliver and that their deadline doesn't hinder their game. It looks great.

Well, they've already achieved it in real-time cutscenes--in fact, it was captured yesterday from a cutscene--so it's not CG or a target render.

But they're trying to make the in-game graphics as close to the cutscenes as possible. Like KeyWii said, it will be the difference between Metal Gear Solid in-game and cutscene.

Andy Serkis, the guy who played Gollum and King Kong is the dramatic director and provides motion cap and voices... so I think that side of the game is a sure hit.

I think the low sales of Kung Fu Chaos on the Xbox are to blame too. Who wouldn't be skeptical after their last game was, put very bluntly, a flop? I think overall this whole fiasco was due to both the luke-warm reception of KFC, and not just because of Microsoft. It's more of a sour lead up to a great project.

According to Ninja Theory, making hair into individual strands would have made the physics they were trying to do with it nearly impossible.

Yeah. Even the hair in DOA4 is made of ribbons and not actual strands.

I hope that game turns out well. Silicon Knights took a beating at E3. Dennis Dyack said it was like holding his hand in an ice bucket. They just need to make that game badass like God of War. Animations and camera need to be improved, and the dude's gotta look, play, and feel like a god.

I read somewhere you can use her hair as a weapon. Like some Pokemon tail-swipe. With hair.

It doesn't have to look real, either. That's just the art style.

Serkis's involvement made me interested and now I added HS onto my list of PS3 games I wanna get when I get a PS3 but saying this makes it a sure **** is crazy. Hollywood involvement in games doesn't equal a sure hit.

The gameplay is what will decide the fate of this game heavily. It will be compared heavily to games like GOW1 and 2 and other games like it. From what I see a lot of the gameplay I have seen has these parts that aren't really game play but more like gameplay/cutscenes in which you just press a button they tell you to press on screen. Similar to COD3 and the one on one attack. I don't really like that to be honest.

I do LOVE the Action button idea they had in Spiderman 2 the game in which you used it a lot and it gave the game a cinematic feel to it. You basically could use it as a part of your spidey sense so everytime Doc Oc was about to hit you spidey would move out of the way and it felt great. I would implement that into a game rather then showing you buttons to press at certain times which really doesn't feel like gameplay to me. I felt the same with COD3's parts

Thats what everyone thinks, but the truth is they have them, especially the gaming division. Microsoft Game Studios isn't this bottomless pit of cash. In fact, it's quite probable Sony's gaming division has a higher operting income.

Do you happen to know what the budget is in that big head full of knowledge KeyWii? I'm finding game budgets an increasingly interesting area of their development. For example, Gears of War cost just $10 million to make, whereas Killzone 2 is the Holland's most expensive media venture of all time.

I thiink that's 'cuz Epic is a much more efficient dev than Guerrilla. From what I heard from GDC goers' impressions, Killzone is going to flop on its back harder than the giant enemy crab in the Genji demo when it's unveiled at E3.

So that is basically what they are aiming for? Awesome, if they pull it off this game will be even more incredible. Microsoft lost a really good opportunity with this game...

I agree. I don't know why they passed on it. :|

I liked Kung Fu Chaos, but it was a major sales flop. I just can't believe Microsoft seeing concepts or trailers for this game and passing on it. It looks absolutely amazing.

Budget constraints. Heavenly Sword is an expensive project.

Do you happen to know what the budget is in that big head full of knowledge KeyWii? I'm finding game budgets an increasingly interesting area of their development. For example, Gears of War cost just $10 million to make, whereas Killzone 2 is the Holland's most expensive media venture of all time.

Killzone2 is atleast at $20 Million probably more around $22 since last I heard. And now with it still not having gameplay footage to release really I would say it's probably $25 Million. Marketing will be big on this worldwide too.

I'm shocked Gears was so cheap to make, $10 Million that's it?

Heavenly Sword is high up there. Gears was inexpensive to make because it was made with UE3. And Epic is trying to use that as their primary selling point -- cheap next-gen games. However, Gears was developed internally by Epic Games. It's very unlikely other companies could make a game of Gears of War quality with just 10 million dollars using Unreal Engine 3. So in reality, if any other company made a game with UE3, it would probably cost about the same as any other next-gen game (that's excluding the actual licensining of the technology.) But at the same time you don't have to build your own engine. If an experienced development team can build their own engine, it's most certainly cheaper for them than licensing UE3.

First pic... She looks Asian.

Second pic... She looks Spanish.

Third pic... She looks Native American.

2nd looks like in game (game play). Due to how bad it looks from the rest.

Wrong. Both the second and third pics are from cutscenes. The third is from yesterday's build, and the second is from a build a long time ago. Did you even read my post? :?

Mark Rein, the Epic VP said it was. Like you say, it is probably due to the vast knowledge of their very own Unreal 3.0 engine.

Although on a technicality it is over a billion dollars. They apparently went to Microsoft and persuaded them to double the RAM from 256MB to 512MB. Epic said it would make games look and run just that little bit better so Microsoft reluctantly agreed. Plus you have to factor in the astronomical marketing hype.

You ask it in the topic "are they CG or real time?". I gave you my opinion.

2nd In game. You can refute it.

So..in other words, you didn't read my post. Because I asked the question as a rhetorical device to set up my answer. I backed up my claims with sources, straight from the developers. How do you back up your claims?

Well, they've already achieved it in real-time cutscenes--in fact, it was captured yesterday from a cutscene--so it's not CG or a target render.

But they're trying to make the in-game graphics as close to the cutscenes as possible. Like KeyWii said, it will be the difference between Metal Gear Solid in-game and cutscene.

If you read the forum that pic came from the dev who posted it says it's a suped-up version of what the game actually looks like...so yeah, it is a target and not pulled straight from the game in its current state -- on the PS3 that is (versus whatever rig they use to build the art). Actual game lacks depth of field and lighting effects which are in that pic, but the final version will at least look close to that if not virtually identical.
