So I just beat Heavy Rain on my second playthrough and all I can say is WOW. This game has the best story I've seen this entire gen so far. (I'm not going to argue about what future not released titles might or might not be better - I'm talking current shipped games)

I'm highly shocked after playing it that it's not a AAA game. The way that the story is handled and everything unfolds is truly a masterpiece. And even replaying the game I got an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT story. I also found the controls to even further ENHANCE the story, making you feel more a part of the action then I've felt before. The entire branding system seems to allow for almost unlimited playthrough because you make so many choices that have an effect on different scenes.

Having played a ton of RPGs this gen, which are suppose to be story driven, Heavy Rain blows them all out of the water. Beliable characters, grounded in real life, and plenty of TWISTS. Simply a stellar, amazing game.

9.5 for me (only problem was the sixaxis controls sometimes didn't register right).

Haven't played it entirely through, but I've seen a good bit. It's great, let there be no doubt. I think the Mass Effect series has it beat, though. inFamous, Assassin's Creed, and Half-Life are no slouches either, IMO! 8)

I got into the story but didn't find it as mind blowing as the OP. A lot of it was cheeseball (FBI vs local cops, the twist) imo.

inFAMOUS, Assassin's Creed? Oh man. . . ME's story is really good; but it's not finished. Kind of hard to judge until we see the entire thing. Heavy Rain as a 1 game story was amazing. Also it has what I'd consider the best branching story ever in a video game.

It has a very below average storyline honestly, it's just some cliche mystery story.

I'm sure if it was told in Rogue-like style, nothing but dungeon crawling you'd think differently.

inFamous' story was incredible, again, in my opinion... Apparently I'm in the minority on this site for enjoying that game. Assassin's Creed has an even better story. ESPECIALLY with the twist that comes at the end of AC2. Awesomeness.

inFAMOUS was a fun game, I liked it. But the story was pretty bad. The story telling STYLE was good - with the comic book style but story, not so much. AC's story was good but it's just too hard to control pacing and other elements to an open world game's story. I'm not saying it's bad. Just that many other games were superior STORY WISE.

my biggest issue with the game were the controls. i know its a different experience than most titles, but is it that much to ask developers to not use a modifier (in this case the l2 button) to move? i think the left analog stick would have handled it nicely. on topic, i liked the story, but i still preferred ME2.

Bashed by who? The same people that buy the SAW movie every year it comes out? I know plenty of people who continually praise it for it's story and the quality of the movie. Myself included.

Maybe if it had 10 year old girls with huge breasts and eyes you would appreciate it more.

I'm with the OP. Sure it has plot holes but it's emotionally involving, challenging and genuinely sad at points.

sure, that's what criticism is about. but i think you tend to make a blanket statement about something that a lot of people would disagree with. to say that the movie sucks is a bit excessive, imo.

Really? I didn't think it was that great. I mean, it was presented very well, but the story itself was a bit lacking and the direction was a little bit off.

I'd wager that the amount of people who LIKED the movie FAR FAR FAR exceeds the amount of people who dislike it. I think it's simply a matter of loud, but small minority. Although tbh, I've heard very few people EVER talk bad about Citizen Kane who actually knows anything about movies.

I think the best stories are the Mass Effect series and the MGS series. Heavy Rain was awesome but nothing as epic as the ones I named. Then again this can be a debate of different opinions, so no one is really "wrong" here.

Then again maybe there just aren't any great gamign stories this gen. FFXIII fell short and HEAVY RAIN, despite having a pretty good story for a game, certainly isn't better than Siren last gen.

That's very true - this topic is very subjective. I really liked the ME series, but the story is incomplete so I can't really judge how good it is. But I personally find the MGS series to have really went downhill after MGS1 as far as storyline goes. It just started getting to far gone and extreme to be believable and good imo.

That could very well be the case. Which is why I specifically said THIS gen. I'm not saying Heavy Rain has the greatest story of all time, however this gen - yeah. The Last Guardian, Alan Wake, and any countless others might change that. But as of day and date, I'd give the nod to HR.

I thought Heavy Rain was good at first, the story, then it slowly unraveled, and by the end, as I digested what I had experienced, it just did not sit well. The allure of Heavy Rain is being able to choose, that is all.

What was wrong with the darkness?

i second that. i really enjoyed the story in the darkness. i know its more setting than story, but the "WW1" level was tremendous, imo.

You guys are pleased very easily if you consider Mass Effect or MGS as good storytelling.

[QUOTE="mythrol"] Citizen Kane that is herald as one of the greatest movies of all time; also had one of the biggest plot holes ever. Chemical_Viking

..And it's constantly bashed because the movie sucks, the movie is only praised these days because what it did to the movie industry not the quality of the movie.

Maybe if it had 10 year old girls with huge breasts and eyes you would appreciate it more.

I'm with the OP. Sure it has plot holes but it's emotionally involving, challenging and genuinely sad at points.

Nah, you forgot ROGUE-LIKE AND DUNGEON CRAWLERING, THEN it would be my type of storyline!!!!

But honestly, I personally like books/movies like these:

Journey To The End of The World

Oyasumi Punpun

Freesia

Nijigahara Holograph

Himizu

Litchi Hikari Club

and

But nah, your right about my taste in stories (also spoiler tags don't work for me, so too bad).

Sounds like a bunch of people hating for the sake of hating.

The story was good, what made it great is that the story is based on the decisions and actions you take. Don't forget the game had around 15 different endings but I doubt the haters here expierenced even ONE ending. Going back and making different decisons, altering the story, and expierencing the outcome is what makes Heavy Rain unique and very innovative.

Haters gonna hate. If it was a 360 exclusive most trolls in here would be saying the opposite.
