Someday, I should get a game from the Virtual Console. I'm not sure why I don't. I tend to be very reluctant to get DL games, but Braid and Castle Crashers were purchases I'm very happy with, so...

I really agree with your second post, about No More Heroes, at least in some respects. I initially had a lot of concerns about the Wii (a lot of which have proven legitimate), but the thing I've always liked about it, and still like about it, is that it removes the focus from cutting-edge tech, and towards making good games. Development costs have been rising, and it makes it harder to make new, original titles. A console that doesn't go all out allows developers to spend less on asset creation, and spend more time on getting the fundamentals of whatever product they make right.

But if talented studios don't make titles for the consoles, what do you get? Suda and Grasshopper's efforts with No More Heroes are a rare exception for third-parties, where most games are either ports or eager efforts from new, inexperienced, or low-budget teams. And while those efforts could bear fruit, when most teams with any money and experience are working on the 360 or PS3, I can't help but feel that a huge opportunity is being missed on the Wii.

subrosian

Agreed.

It basically is why I look at stuff like Madden and Force Unleashed on the Wii and go "why bother?". What's worse is, for some of these games, they're making a version for 360 / PS3 / PC, and another version for PS2 / Wii. So the Wii gets PS2 graphics, when it's capable of far better.

No More Heroes really makes me long for seeing the third parties (and Nintendo too) step up and say "even if the Wii is less powerful, we should be trying new techs on it". After all, the Xbox was more powerful than the GCN, and yet the GCN did some things that the Xbox didn't do - now, granted, 480p vs 720p is a big thing, and the Wii isn't going to win a graphics contest - but if you're working with lower budgets anyway, why not spin the wheel? Why not take a risk on something *other* than another carnival games?

In that regard I feel obligated to own No More Heroes simply for being different - and yes, perhaps I will buy Zak & Wiki, and yes I'll get Homestar Runner games and Megman 9 - because that's what I think the Wii *should be* - it's what we looked at the Wii and wanted (at least... I did, as a long time gamer).

I would put this as my sig but it's too much space ;_; Anyways at least I happy being on this epic thread and hopes the games get better

So you say you currently own a Wii, DS, gaming PC and Xbox 360. any plans to jump to the sony side of things next?darkspineslayer

That's up to Sony, everything else I own is white - why no white PS3 in the US? In all seriousness, maybe, I like Little Big Planet, but the PS3 probably won't be coming home until next year.

What would you have Nintendo do?

Popadophalis

Take 30 million of the eleventy-billion dollars they've made, find three development teams with some strange ideas (Portal strange) and put them to work. We've known about "Disaster" on the Wii since launch, and it's not coming until 2009. So, if we're looking at two ~ three years to get those high budget games out there, the idea would be to push them now.

I'd actually also be for a "Wiiware" iniative. I think Nintendo should have some contests to see game ideas, and then give the top five ideas small budgets and let them go at it. Megaman 9 and Strong Bad show us more of what could be done on the Wiiware front. They could release the five projects for $50 on one "compliation disc" and then also sell them for $10 each via Wiiware. It would be a pretty cool thing, to get the community involved in creating software for the Wii.

At the heart of the context of this thread, I'm reminded of one of my previous sigs.

Nice read. You should try Z$W and MercuryMeltdown and MarioGalaxy. I would love to see what you have to say about MarioGalaxy. Enjoy ur Wii. :)SER69

Mercury Meltdown is the marble rolling game, right? I wish the Wii had demos like XBL does - I'm not sure if that's "fun" or "a giant string of endless obscenties damn you stupid marble STAY ON THE TRACK" :P

-

Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3 are inevitable purchases - though I think I will be passing on Brawl, based on my time with it I have to say the "element" that made Melee work for me is not present.

There's a 360 that turns into an evil robot in Transformers.

That sequence was the most blatant series of product placements I've seen in some time.

In the actual movie? I don't remember seeing that. Just the boombox (frenzie), cel phone, and the soda dispenser along the lines of non-vehicles.

That would be "Kororimpa", in "MercuryMeltdownRevolution" you control a mercury blob, but yeah it's essentially the same thing.

Just saw the end recently.

A Mountain Dew machine, a Cadillac, and an Xbox 360 become Transformers. Weird stuff.

I wasn't aware consoles were a race. See I could have taken the low-road and made a racially-insensitive joke to prove my wit, or the high-road, and made fun of kids with cancer. :| Let's do none of that, I'll casually mention I'm the descendant of holocaust survivors, and we'll let my character speak for itself, eh?

The lack of color choices in this generation's consoles is a bit odd to me. The Wii at least has an excuse, Nintendo can't keep the things in stock, so why make things harder by having the only Wii left in the store be the "hot pink" one? But, Sony has had PS3s on the shelf since a month after launch, and special editions are the "thing to do" in Japan - so, why not the US?

Microsoft has sort of been trying, at least - I mean, okay, Pink, Blue, Barf Green, Black, White, and Halo (is that a color?) controllers are not the "ideal" mix I would have gone for, but it's something.

Sounds like you just described DreamBuildPlay.

Honestly MS is so far beyond Nintendo in terms of Indie/Community developer support, I don't see how Nintendo could possibly catch up.

A couple million dollars in funding, a few free developer kits, and a little bit of promotion. There are Nintendo fans who gobble that stuff up, if you handed them the tools. Which, when you look at it, is something Microsoft doesn't have - they have tech savvy people who want a shot at making games, but from the looks of things, some of the ones who've got a break really wanted to make bigger budget games, and act downright ungrateful at the oppotunities they did receive.

My feeling on the XNA Community Games has been that while MS is putting the tools out there, they aren't necessarily making things happen as quickly as I'd like. The "Summer Games" was a nice XBLA push, but when we will see the same for community games happen again? This Fall? Next E3?

which element was that?Shinobishyguy

Hmm... the end-game, that "high skill" area where I looked at the best players and simply went "wow, can that be done?". The "balancing" now has left me not quite as thrilled with the overall experience. Or perhaps they simply went too far to try and make things feel "right" with old fans, and the experience did not evolve in quite the way I expected. I'm not certain, but it has never brought me the same joy that SSBM did.

Nostalgia might also play a key in that feeling. When melee came out it was ground breaking.

While I personally prefer brawl over melee due to the characters (hell yeah Metaknight and Dedede) and the expanded content I can understand.

Oh no good sir, now you have brought it. It is brought, it cannot be unbrung. You've also defended Kevin-V's interpretation of reality (as he reviewed LO), which is kind of odd, because you're not wearing Assassin's Creed underpants.

The cost of making games. MS has raised the cost to the small Indie developers. Well making a game for the Wii is cheaper than making a game for the 360. Then again well MS has pushed out a number of AAA arcade titles. The Wii has none. These are reason why Nintendo may do good. There are other key advantages that MS has.

On the flip side anyone who knows me, also knows I am a Strongbad fan and would never get mad at any console that allows me to play Strongbad games. :P

MS has made game development 100x easier and cheaper than Nintendo, through XNA. I don't see why people are so quick to discount XNA Community Games as viable option for small indie studios...it's not like Nintendo just hands those guys dev-kits for free. They're still expensive and typically require a publisher. By far the 360 has the lowest barrier for entry.

Well really PC has the lowest barrier to entry :P

I don't discount the games, I do sometimes question the community. I got Strongbad's Cool Game for Attractive People, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Super Mario Bros, and Mega Man 2 for $40. People also buy Carnival Games for $40. That makes it kind of hard when you're an indie developer to get people going "okay, yeah, let me get this game". So, if there's a place it's going to happen, it's far easier on "enthusiast-driven" consoles like the 360, than on the Wii where I imagine most of your audience wants to buy games in a traditional way.

-

We just really need a better acceptance of downloading games on consoles for the mainstream - 360 is doing the most to push that, there's absolutely no question. The Wii surprisingly has a better organized marketplace though. It's pretty simple to find exactly the game you want, you can divide into categories like "publisher" and "genre" or do a search by title. By comparisson, the XBL marketplace is a freaking mess - quite likely why they're doing the Fall update.

Of course, there is a lot more content on the LIVE marketplace, but it's harder to find. This is simply one area Nintendo did well. VC. However, Wiiware? Honestly it's barren. There are barely in games, and few original games in Wiiware, whereas if I got on LIVE Arcade (or yes, community games) it's packed - there are tons of games, many of them new and original - whereas on the Wii most of the good stuff is in the Virtual Console, not the Wiiware.

-

It was looking sparse

I see I was just a bit late to the party. :P Feel free to add this to the OP Sub.

My fellow sheep...we've endured many things. We've endured teh megaton, we've endured Jeff's wrath, and we've endured E3 '08. But now, I'm afraid this is the end.

Subrosian has a Wii.

....

What does this mean? We have little time, but while I still have some shred of sanity, please allow me to explain.

As we all know, 100% of SW believes that one cannot be biased against a system if he or she owns that system. We also know that "teh bias" is the foundation of SW. People will respect you and follow your every word if and only if you're unbiased, and of course, we all know that being unbiased is very possible.

Here is SW's position on Subrosian:

____________________________________

55% Want to have Subrosian's children

34% Agree with Subrosian

10% Kind of agree with Subrosian

1% Other

___________________________________

This means that all this time, the only thing keeping Subrosian from controlling SW completely was the fact that he did not own a Wii. Now, he can say whatever, and SW will agree.

If he says "Nintendo doesn't make games, fool," then we'll all lament the lack of third party support even more.

If he asks "Why do we never see PC doing HD?" then we'll all wonder why.

If he says "Turn 360 degress and walk away," then damnit, you'll moonwalk MJ''s nose off!

My friends, Subrosian has completed his dastardly combo, and it is far too late for a counterspell. But, there is still something we can do. My fellow sheep, here are our options.

It's very important for them to reserve sticky space for uh... reminding you not to have fun in System Wars. Are you having fun? Did you check the TOU? Why aren't you smiling? Let's put a SMILE on that face... ;)

I see I was just a bit late to the party. :P Feel free to add this to the OP Sub.Tsug_Ze_Wind

I'm out of text space, you'd have to get Willy to add it below his picture. That's pretty funny stuff though. I'm slightly concerned abou the "having sub's children" bit...

Are most Wii owners using virtual console? You say it is the best feature, but do grandma and little girl use it?

Fun in sticky form is far too potent and addictive. Lives have been shattered from posters withdrawal after sticky removals of fun threads.

Posters must have fun in sensible and temporary form.

Fun quotient reached, shutting down. :P

I can see it now, posters in the streets, looking for their fix. "Spare some lulz? Spare some lulz? God bless".

A new conspiracy has emerged... indeed.

I was thinking maybe you meant The Conduit and Disaster: Day of Crisis. I thought Conduit asking on Kotaku for people to submit control schemes was a cool idea, I kind of hope mine winds up in the game. I approve of a company doing that.

Stop trying to tear our love triangle apart! In this time of war, has loved blossomed on the battlefield?

On topic... uhh... Nintendo *shakes fist* see what you've reduced us to Nintendo? This is what happens when you bring a Wii into your home. It screws up the natural order.

Nice read subrosian. I guess the big question remains how you will view the console in a years time.

Well you tell me - what do you think the Wii will look like game-wise between now and holiday 2009? Think AC, Conduit, Disaster, Pikmin 3, and whatever else will come out and be good stuff? Any surprises in store? Or will E3 09 be another E3 07 or E3 08?

Are you going to try de Blob, Mushroom Men or any other Wii games coming out this year. I know your a fan of platfromers. Are you going to take the next step and look forward to the holiday lineup for the Wii.

Can subrosian take the jump?? :P
