What's that old axiom? Practice makes perfect?

By now, Hermits, or pro-PC gamers, debate skills must be far from perfect. They just haven't had any practice against new arguments. See, for years now Hermits have been attacked with the same old arguments:

  • The PC lacks genre diversity.
  • Nobody games on PCs anymore.
  • A gaming PC costs you thousands of dollars every few years.
  • The PC doesn't have any games.

Now, every system has a few System Wars memes that refuse to die.

For the Wii, it's that it's kiddy, or that it's last gen.

The 360 that they all break, or don't have any games besides shooters.

The PS3 that it has no games, is circling the drain, or is the 'just wait' system'.

However none of these other systems misconceptions are so viral and so long lasting as the ones concerning the PC. None of these misconceptions form the only assaults ever made against the PC.

The other main difference with the PC is that these misconceptions were empirically and conclusively disproven long ago. This then causes a problem for Hermit debates.

Somebody says nobody games on the PC anymore? They just link some of these facts.

Someone says the PC is only FPS, RTS and MMORPGS? Yawn, not it has plenty.

No games? Nope. (This one is even stickied, eliminating any hope Hermits might do some studious research).

You can see the problem beginning to form. Everytime the PC is attacked, the attack is so dated, so cliche, so easily dispelled, that Hermits have absolutely no need to even think about what their saying. They've seen it so many times before and so definitely that it's pointless to even think about it. There's probably a link disproving.

Therefore, anti-PC fanboys, I beg you, be dynamic. Hit Hermits where they haven't been hit. Make some new arguments, so their debate skills don't completely die out, since at the moment they only need to link to a sticky to counteract the drivel you spout.

It's not your fault. You actually prove my point. When the attack is so common, so generic, it's so easy to quickly dispel.

the consoles get changed every 5-7 years, theres always a big shake up in the industry and new things to talk about at the start of the new generations.

PC gaming hasnt evolved in 20 years. Dont blame the consolites because PC gaming is a monotonous entertainment media.

I think more than anything it only comes down to preference. I prefer consoles due to their "plug and play" nature, while I can easily respect why someone would prefer PC gaming.

When someone resorts to bashing any of the systems, it is usually due to them either needing to justify their own system preferences to themselves, or sour grapes about another platform doing well.

Its sad, really. Well, actuall, its kinda funny...

Ok, maybe I should put a disclaimer.

I want the arguments to be original AND logical.

I mean, where did 3D come from? Where did motion sensing come from? Where did online come from? And it all happened in the past 20 years!

But no, your right. The changes between say, the Xbox and 360 are truly revolutionary. It isn't just a console capable of better graphics. The PC on the other hand has been stagnant since 1987. It's not pioneered most of the new genres, the way we play games or been at the vanguard of technical development.

I actually (all sarcasm aside) respect this argument.

Someone recognises that they like something, they might not be able to place their finger upon it. Opinion and preference are valid positions to take IMO, and if people did it more often in responding to the PC this thread wouldn't be here.

Absolutely. Fanboys cannot just like something and leave it like that. They have to "prove" something is better, usually using the most outlandish arguements and/or sources possible.

I have nothing against the PC. I tried PC gaming for a bit, and its just not my cup of tea, but I wish it was sometimes.

I think you missed the point of the thread. he said NEW arguments. Your concerns have been handled many times before.

*ahem*

- You can use controllers on the pc, including console controllers like the wireless 360 pad

- Not only can you buy pc games without even leaving your home, you can download them via systems like steam which require no install. just download and play

- pc games are cheaper than console games. the cost of a highest pc is cheaper than the cost of any 1 console with a good hdtv.

Although grammatically broken, bingo. I want everyone to game on the platform they want to, but when you drop that much scrilla on a console and have to worry about the crazy updates (although one could argue consoles are getting equally as bad with the different versions), it's not worth it to a lot of people. And, I don't mean the people who play the odd PC game (which I assume really helps sales/PC gamer numbers), I mean those that game exclusively PC. I am not even sure where all the hardcore PCers come from because I only know three people that PC game and two of them are computer geeks.

Why I don't PC game is because I really enjoy Nintendo franchises, not to mention plenty of other games the PC doesn't have. Whereas in contrast, the PC doesn't offer me anything for the extra dollars it is that I can't find elsewhere. The only thing I have thought about would be buying older PC games which you can get for next to nothing at bargain stores everywhere. I'm not a graphics whore, and that plays a huge part as well.

You make a very good point, However there will always be that one person whos driven by brand loyalty or feels they need to defend their purchase. We shall never be rid of fanboyism because some people are too arrogant to admit they are wrong.

Don't flatter yourself. I'm not trying to TURN you to the darkside or anything. I could care less what you game on. I'm just debunking bogus facts. You entire post describes PC gaming as some controller-less, brick&mortar selling, super expensive thing. And none of those descriptions fit the bill

Thats all i'm posting about. You don't want to game on PC? fine. have fun with whatever you choose. Just don't spread misinformation

As far as the new debates hermits want to have thrown at them, I think the problem is that PC gaming begins and ends for most right at the basics. Like it or not, people don't like installing, downloading this and that, upgrading, hoping things work, dropping down significantly more dollars on the machine itself, learning about putting a quality system together and doing it. The reason people don't have other arguments is because they stopped caring once they found out they had to do all of this stuff. I think it's an adequate complaint that doesn't need further explanation.

I know people who hate the Wii because they say they like to sit completely still and relax when gaming. Do I believe this for a moment? Hell no, but like it or not, they don't want to move when they game, and it's hard to argue against that. I think PC has the same thing going against it, fundamental discrepancies that simply need no further explanation. You either are with it or you are not.

Hmm, I was looking for new arguments, not shallow ad-hominems.

Also Kevin Bacon was in Footloose. But unlike the Donkey, Hermits have the facts on their side.

Consolites tend (not all just alot of them)to be young screaming fanboys who think gaming started and ends with consoles: FF invented the RPG, no one gamed before nintendo, etc. So anyone with a bit of knowledge really puts them in their place. They can't argue games or specs so instead they stick to tried and tested formulas and parrot what they have seen other people say, despite the fact they are only going to succeed in their ownlimited craniums.

Greatpost BTW.

[QUOTE="TheJuiceyBar"]Yeah, just like the hermit on top, i dont wanna pc game, what is so hard to understand? I rather spend less money and i dont need to require an HDTV in order to play my games.TeamR

Hermits always complain about KB/m is better then controller, so if i use a controller on pc, am i a newbie? Name me a computer that i can afford that can run crysis on high settings, Brick and mortar selling? HUH

I disagree with your post, with all the hermits in SW and the replies in the links you posted. There is a difference between facts and proof.

[QUOTE="_Pedro_"]It's indeed getting boring here, perhaps we can fight amongst ourselves :Paliblabla2007

A most excellent idea indeed...but where to start?

Ah...err...anyone who likes Quake is a big...ah...poo-poo head? Sorry, I don't have a lot experience in this 'hate thing.'

I dunno.... liets fight about AMD vs Intel, Nvidia vs ATI,, this hardware vs that hardware.

The problem with having a system wars style hardware argument over PC hardware is usually that the sides are both very clear cut, with swamps of numbers to support the obvious leader. All you have to do is link someone to the wiki describing the hardware specs and a couple respected benchmarking websites to dispel any doubts.

In system wars, hardware arguments are filled with references to vague features(6 SPEs!!11) and a few cherrypicked numbers(600 gigaflops!!!111) that dont really make any sense by themselves. Its kind of hard to do that with PC hardware.

Now, a discussion about what parts to buy based on a price vrs power scale is where you'll start getting a lot of personal opinion thrown in to make things more nice and SWsy.

You're kind of right. I don't think we can do hardware. Plus, Nvidia owns AMD/ATI by default, right?

So, we fight over who's made the best deals in buying hardware?

There's still Mac vs PC.... but PC owns Mac by default so.....

No hermits don't say the KB/M is better than the controller in all cases, but typically for FPS, RTS and MMOs. The KB/M is like any other set of controls i.e the analog, dpad etc. It works well for somethings and for somethings it doesn't. The KB/M wouldn't be the ideal scheme of controls for fighting games and action adventure(like RE4). You have to remember, the PC is a open end platform and unlike consoles it isn't bound to just do one thing i.e having a controller setup only. There are gamepads out there, actually there are many. You can even use the 360 controller on PC.

So if using a gamepad to game on PC helps you play, then that is cool. When I first started to game on PC it was with the original Rainbow 6. I was a console gamer before that so I wasn't use to the KB/M at all. I realized that in FPS you needed accuracy and since there was no auto aim or others playing with a controller then it made things a lot harder. So I moved from completely using the gamepad to play to using the gamepad to move and the mouse to aim and shoot. That worked well for sometime.

Then one day I brought American Mcgee's Alice(One of my favorite games btw) and it didn't have controller support. So I was forced to play completely with the KB/M. It sucked at first, but by the end of the game I learned how to use the controls with ease. So at the end I learned how to use the KB/M in all games. Its not hard, you just have to work with it and have patience.

One of the reasons I game on the PC is so that I don't have to justify it. All one has to do is see what I am playing and they totally get it.

He actually figured that out a while ago.
