No big general hype, so not a flop, just a low scoring game. Were was the hype for Hyperdimension Neptunia? and far as I know not very many JRPG fans were hyping this game.
will eventually get hyperdimension later this year

The JRPG community, (Well the hardcore ones) are some of the most biased people in the world. So is the FPS community, and the RTS community and so on, but the problem here is GameSpot always uses FPS fans to review FPS games, and FPS fans to review JRPGs these days.[QUOTE="Bigboi500"]
Who the heck is Kat Bailey? It's obvious that who ever that person is they didn't play very far into the game. The criticisms about the battle system are somewhat legit, but everything else is way off. It's pretty clear that this Kat person isn't a hardcore RPG gamer. Giving a good game like HN a 3.0 is ridiculous. I actually beat the game (didn't do all the extra stuff) and it is a good game with rewards if you play it long enough.
Bunk review is bunk. Gamespot should take the time to hire some better free-lance reviewers who actually know what the heck they're talking about if they want to be taken seriously from the JRPG community. I rated it a 7.5.

The game isn't great by any means but it sure isn't as bad as she claims it is, unless one has a tremendous bias against the kind of game/genre in the first place. Very shady business practice methinks.

I recognize that name. She's the host of Active Time Babble podcast on 1up. She's pretty hardcore if you ask me. You should listen to her podcast and get schooled. ;)
It's pretty obvious that she must be a casual mainstream gamer who only played the game for a few hours at best and made some premature judgements.No. If you listened to her podcasts you would know she's really into not just JRPGs, but all types of RPGs. She's well informed.
Theres only 1 negative that bugs me
Characters are disturbingly sexualized caricatures of young girls
Im gussing this person hates anything to do with japan then.

Isn't that a description of anything anime?

Yeah that shows she's quite unfamiliar with the genre and the culture. That sounds like a hardcore JRPG fan to me. :roll:Boobies[QUOTE="johny300"]Why is AR Tonelico3 is rated M ?spookykid143
I also hear its sexual inuendo, I see the game getting at least a 7. Since iv seen some reviews and it sounds like its a fun game. Unless this person reviews it again since they dont know the whole looks young and comes off sexy is how japan always have been.

Yea there are some animes that dont fall into that catogory but there are few that does. The cover is usally this girl is a billion years old just with a child like body.

One episode touches on mainline Super Robot Taisen, which doesn't even come here except for the versions with no licenses.
EDIT: Listening to that episode now, she says that half the games she buys for her DS are Japanese.
This suggests familiarity with the culture.
I just watched the video and it seems that game has everything I dislike about JRPG games.
- Childish
- Too cutesy
- Strange sexual hints which border on paedophelia
- Characters that look the same as most other JRPGs
- Very annoying voice acting
-Unreal-
Wow you pointed out some sterotypes, you look like you know a lot about JRPGs.

Is still dont find it worthy of a negative point. Its like if japan did a review of gears and said this
negative
-Big steroid looking male characters looks silly
You can cry about it sure but dont let it affect the game itself. It makes the reviewer look just plain silly. Itsalso like me saying ugh this character has pink hair I hate that time to take away some points.

Most JRPGs have exactly what I listed. In fact I have Star Ocean Last Hope running on my PS3 right now. Just earlier, I was playing and my party had to climb down a fabric banner to get down from a building. One is a female wearing a skirt and she said something about her insisting on going first, hinting that the other male characters will look up her skirt. So obvious and unecessarily childish sexual hints. The game funilly enough also has everything else I listed. It's overly cutesy, the dialogue is childish as is the story and the voice acting is annoying. The characters look like they came from other JRPG franchises too. I expected my comments to be brought up though by people with Japanese and anime related images. Is still dont find it worthy of a negative point. Its like if japan did a review of gears and said this

That's funny because I have a licensed U.S. version of Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier on DS. All this talk about "disturbing sexualized little girls" doesn't get mentioned in games like Persona 3 and 4. High school girls clearly under the age of 17, or Disgaea which features Etna and Flonne and Adel's little sister, Tales and FF games featuring underage girls caught in suggestive situations. If she's a hardcore JRPG fan, she should be familiar with such things. She probably reads stuff off of a queue card that was written for her. Then one wonders why she spends an hour and a half every week recording a podcast dedicated to Western and Japanese RPGs. But then not every game has guys with huge muscles. Most JRPGs on the other hand have many striking similarities in their presentation, so much so that people who aren't huge fans of them can't tell many apart. Most JRPGs have exactly what I listed. I expected my comments to be brought up though by people with Japanese and anime related images.1.) If you have a problem with cutesy, sexualized JRPGs then why by Star Ocean The Last Hope? There are plenty of pre-PS2 JRPGs that have no hint of any of that, you just sound like you have little to not experience with JRPGs.
2.) Sure it can get annoying but you play games for the gameplay, riiigghhtt? Just ignore the dialog if you want, I don't care about 99% of the stories I read.
3.) There you go stereotyping again, does it make you feel smart?

She was talking about Super Robot Taisen Z2, which doesn't exist in the US. She says in that very podcast that she spent about $90 importing it. She talks at length about how the Super Robot Taisen franchise gave exposure to certain formerly-obscure Japanese mecha anime.
As I pointed out in the edit I recently made, half of her DS games are Japanese. She's familiar with the genre, the culture, and its tropes. Some are better than others.
I haven't played Hyperdimension Neptunia, so I can't know for sure. But if the characters are as she suggests (little more than vapid loli moe stereotypes), then they bear nothing in common with the well-rounded human characters of the Persona series. The problem isn't that the characters are underage and wind up in occasionally-suggestive situations, the problem is that the characters are nothing more than fanservice.
I've presented the evidence of Kat's knowledge of JRPGs and Japan as plainly as possible. I can't make you accept what's right under your nose, but there's no shame in admitting your errors.

I don't know her personally, but I do know that she didn't play the game for very long based on some of the things she said. I also know that I did beat the game, and it's nowhere near as bad as she said it was. There is only one or two characters that are very young, the rest of them are older. She makes it sound like every character is a over-sexualized loli, that isn't true and people who played it in-depth would know this. That's like saying anyone who collects firearms must be a Branch Davidian or a neo nazi. ;) Generalizations ftw! Crappy gameplay, crappy combat, crappy visuals...nope, not much there other than some lolis. :D But, hey, some people like that stuff.[QUOTE="Verge_6"]
Looks like this is something to avoid if you don't have a thing for little girls. ;)

Now, with guns...oh, there's so much to be had with guns. I can go into detail.
