It has all ready been established that Microsoft was not the first company to introduce DLC since DLC is not a term used EXCLUSIVELY for content that adds to a game but for any content that can be downloaded.

The phrase is used to refer specifically to content created for video games that is released separately from the main video game release. The phrase has, however, also been used to refer to any type of digital entertainment media distributed online.

He then converted his variable speed adaptive modem technology to download games from central servers to individual households. This allowed users to call up a system and for a fee download games to their GameLine modules. The game would work for typically 5-10 plays, after which the user would have to connect to GameLine again and pay for another download.

For a monthly subscription fee (usually $14.95 depending on location), along with a $25 activation fee, the subscriber would get an adapter, which plugged into the Genesis cartridge slot, and was connected to their cable television connection. The service would provide them with unlimited access to 50 games, selectable through an on-screen menu, with new games appearing every month and later every 2 weeks. The games would be downloaded in about 1 minute and play just like the retail versions. These games were organized by genre, such as Action, Fighting, Adventure, and Family. Each month, there was a special theme with originally composed music, artwork and game categories.
----PC DLC from the DLC page on wikipedia---
The overwhelming majority of such content was available for free, and the phrase "downloadable content" is rarely used to refer to such content, instead being termed "user-created content." Nonetheless, user-created maps and mods are widely recognized as the precursor to the downloadable content ofpopular console video games today.
(Though this is skewed likely written by a PC person and we all know hermits like to think every thing is superior and free when it comes to pc :majority: means most it doesn't mean all therefor there were pay for DLC on PC and since DLC on PC has existed before Xbox we can assume pay for DLC predates xbox pay for DLC)
Take it as you want really the above is fact simple as that *except the small diatribe againest hermits* the only thing that can be debated above is the definition of DLC and even then thats factual since Downloadable content and the definition is content that is downloadable and games full games that are paid for are content DLC doesn't just refer to addon's...ect
P.S: lets not bring up the charge for mmo games on a monthly basis and the charge for addon packs to them.
