I like things really realistic or reallly hi res.

Does this make me an unsophisticated barbarian? No.

I just don't see whats so artistic about games like Okami. If you ask me its just laziness on the devs part. Imagine Okami in hi res textured detail. It would be awesome

I find your comment on barbarians very untrue...

Perhaps you should document yourself before you post.

I don't think it's all laziness on the devs part but I agree that you definitely are not an unsophisticated barbian (at least not just based on that).

No, just no. :| If you can't see the artwork in Okami then I don't even know where to begin with you. I guess you must think cutting edge realistic graphics that mimic real life is art, and not someone who took the time to come up with a unique visual style. Would Mario games be as attractive if Mario looked like a real fat italian plumber? No.....

To say the devs who made Okami were just being lazy is a bold statment. So because they didn't want to add fur shaders and normal mapping in their game, they're just lazy? You can't respect their choice? Did you even play the game? The artstyle completely matches the game since you use can freeze time and use a PAINTBRUSH to attack enemies and do other things. Here's a video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aOT95HPv51E

Now tell me, how would adding realistic graphics make this game play better, or better yet how would it fit the theme?

Good art styles and good stylization aren't mutually exclusive.

And I swear to God, the first person to try and tell me that you can't critisize something because "its art" is going to get their legs broken.

ok first off, i never insulted the gameplay of okami.

Second you mention mario, and its been proven that marios mustache, hat and suspenders were all made because it was easier to animate then a full face so self ownage. It doesnt really take that much creativity to think of the style in okami mkay, cellshading has been around for a while

Some people look at Picaso's work and call it amazing. I look at it and say it's crap. Does this mean I'm a barbarian? No. Just means I have a different taste in art from those that like Picaso just like have a different taste in art from the people who, like me, like Okami's art.

Each to their own of course.

I usually prefer 'artistic' visuals in games mainly because few games nowadays deliberately disband the idea of 'realistic' graphics and so seeing worlds that look highly stylised is a breath of fresh air to me.

Just don't call the Okami devs lazy...

Out of focus? Being far away from anything in real life makes it out of focus, unless of course you're wearing trifocals.

How is it self ownage? lol. You completely missed the point huh? Cellshading textures is lazy huh? I guess we can ignore the models themselves, the effects used? I guess normal mapping and making a realistic looking wooden floor trumps stylized looking visuals?

Okami's visual design is based off of old Japanese art. Jet Set Radio Future and the Wind Waker both use cell shading yet they don't look like Okami, let alone Japense art. It's sad that you can't look beyond the cell shaded textures and see the true artwork behind some of these games.

Would you call this not art because it's not "realistic"?

And crysis and gears are pretty far from realism being fictional sci-fi tales of fantasy.

One more thing TC because you never answered this question. Would adding realistic graphics to Okami (i.e fur shaders, bump maps, etc) fit the game's theme, and would it fit the theme better then it's current style? Seeing as how the game is trying MIMIC Japanese art and all I can't see it fitting, but I'm sure you can explain to me.....Right? :|

NO, NO NOOOO! Its not for the sake of it being art. If every game was photo realistic there'd be little distinction between games. I like to know I'm playing a video game. I respect what Nintendo has done this generation even though I see myself enjoying what artsy games some of the studios Sony's been working with spew out. Like Plastic doing Linger in Shadows (doubt its a game but I can dream) and Media Molecule doing LBP and whatever the team behind ICO is doing. Developers have to start making stuff that doesn't involve shooting people in the head online. PC's already been doing that for years and has been doing it better than consoles.

As such, the perception of art is in the eye of the person perceiving it.

Well, depends what you mean by that.

Nobody can tell me that Super Mario Galaxy wouldn't have been even more amazing-looking in HD. And going to HD, which would be increasing the resolution, is a pure technical upgrade.

Technical and artistic graphics aren't mutually exclusive. They can work in tandem. Galaxy looks much better than Mario 64, and a lot of that has to do with various technical upgrades, especially the lighting.

I wouldn't mind seeing SMG at a higher resolution or in HD, but what I just don't want is the game to look realistic because it would obviously lose a lot of its appeal.

Nothing 'contains' more art than the next thing, it's whether we appreciate the artistic quality of something or not. Photorealism is of course something we can all appreciate, but not neccesarily on artistic merit.

Completely subjective and overrated. The "art" in Crysis is it's mechanics. It's core. Art in video games is more than what you see. It's the medium as a whole.
