it's popular because it nailed the FPS style of gaming down. Excellent controls and a realistic atmosphere gives it the edge over most if not all first person shooters. BF isn't that great because the weapons aren't fun to use, but in COD, you can upgrade classes and have fun with other people who have the game.

Why did Pokemon become a phenomenon?
You need something that can work and then it's mostly money thrown at it and luck. The massmarket was ready to dive into a single competitive FPS at the time and it became COD because COD4 was actually accepted by casual and hardcore alike.
People like seeing things become succesful, I think that is why people sometimes pile onto one thing and make it break records. Time was right, genre was right, and a lot of money was thrown at it and they were lucky it became as big as it is.

CoD doesn't have any classes and I'm pretty sure we had plenty of FPS styled games before CoD that involved no more then running around and shooting. Excellent controls like every other shooter? Hard to see how you can mess up controls in a simple shooter like CoD. Also I don't see how running around like rambo and using killstreaks gives the game a realistic atmosphere. don't worry, BF3 is a pos too. So is Homefront, Crysis 2, Killzone, etc.

It's simple. Make a game with good graphics, lot of action, easy enough gameplay that gives ridiculous rewards constantly, a lot of goals to achieve, and profit.

COD, has simple pick up and play gameplay, pretty good graphics (to the casual gamer oc), lot of kill streak rewards. Skyrim, focus on action, huge with a lot of goals, easy enough gameplay. GTA...and you can just go on and on.

No, they nailed the casual FPS style of gaming down. CoD4 had real FPS gaming, now in MW3 you don't even have to aim properly anymore. Plus maps are s***, killstreaks are everywhere, and little kids are getting panic knife kills. If you look at CoD4 it had Panic Knifing, but CoD4 didn't have many of the other problems that the newer CoDs have.

Don't let your fanboy goggles blind you to the fact that when a new COD drops the mass market think "dude sick, so realistic." Of course they aren't anywhere near the best, but they don't suck and that's the point.

COD still has solid visuals on it's own, just don't put a pic of COD next to Battlefield 3.

You really want to know what makes COD so popular TC? I will tell you... Its because it rewards the player, for pretty much everything. You can suck donkey balls at COD, and still level up quickly and get spammed unlocks and awards. It creates a sense of satisfaction, of rewarding the player no matter how badly they perform. I have yet to encounter another franchise (let alone a FPS) that does this in the same way, yet people tend not to notice it. COD gives to the player, noob or not. That is why.

Call of Duty can be fun in the right scenario. I find it a bit more of a headache because of all of the extremely cheap gameplay mechanics. People love those though.

Whatever. I can still play games like Counterstrike if I don't want to play Call of Duty.

Exactly. Don't want to play Call of Duty? Play one of the many "hardcore" shooters on PC. Those communities aren't going anywhere.

I stopped playing Cod for a couple of months and i thought i would get owned nope. it's easy to get a decent score all you have to do is random frag grenade or panic knife, hip fire while running or if you get caught off guard drop shot. In bad company 2 i remember getting a good score but my team would lose anyways.

Because it's one of the most fun social(key word is social) game on consoles. I mean if I had a long day at school/work coming home drinking a few and playing cod with friends is fun. TBH tc It's only fun to play with friends. As a whole? it's pretty mediocre

It's a ton of fun in split screen, but online, I'm generally dead within 7 seconds (not exaggerating; that's my average lifespan from the stats page). Quite a few matches, I never manage to fire a shot.

it's popular because it nailed the FPS style of gaming down. Excellent controls and a realistic atmosphere gives it the edge over most if not all first person shooters. BF isn't that great because the weapons aren't fun to use, but in COD, you can upgrade classes and have fun with other people who have the game.ZumaJones07

Not realistic AT ALL!!!

So CoD guns that have no recoil, terrible sound effects, all perform very similar for their category (for the most part), are boringly easy and laser accurate, and have crappy weapon models are better than Battlefield 3? GTFO idiot. Have you played the game? or is your only experience hearing a 12 year old hype it up?

It's still $59.99 pretty much everywhere here in Montreal. Not worth it for me. I'd rather spend $60 on a game like Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3 or RAGE.

it's popular because it nailed the FPS style of gaming down. Excellent controls and a realistic atmosphere gives it the edge over most if not all first person shooters. BF isn't that great because the weapons aren't fun to use, but in COD, you can upgrade ****s and have fun with other people who have the game.ZumaJones07

You're crazy man. The guns in BF3 feel INFINITELY better to shoot than the cap guns in CoD. BF3's guns have a believable kick and "oomph" to em that just feels great. That and they just sound absolutely amazing. CoD guns have no recoil and they sound embarrassing

Its competition everyone can get into and compete. Its not really about the rehashing, because games like madden is rehashed but everyone can't play madden. Thats not really a pick up and play game. Call of duty on the other hand is, and its fun. Its not my favorite by any means, but you meet alot of different people on there, your guranteed to always get into quick games, its not complicated to play. Its so simple its genious, thats why it wont die out, at all. And thats why people copy it, really its kind of like a sport with a joystiq in hand honestly, and the developers know that, so they will continue to make it. No matter what shooter come out with snappy graphics, if it doesn't have the fun competitive atmosphere a game like call of duty has and can attract ALL audiences, it won't be AS successfull.

I agree that CoD is popular because of it's simplicity - it's loud, fast and fun. Heck, that's why I love the campaigns too.

I enjoy the campaigns a lot more than the actual multiplayer. Black Ops and to a lesser extent MW3 were very entertaining in that regard. I prefer the way how Blops told it's story over how MW3 did it.
