If it wasn't for Sony, MS wouldn't have made an Xbox.

If it wasn't for Nintendo, Sony wouldn't have made a PS1.

If it wasn't for Sony, MS wouldn't have stepped up their game and made a better system.

Innovation and such goes both ways. These arguments are getting incredibly tiring.

In fact, if it wasn't for Pong, there would be no video games.

In fact, if it wasn't for Charles freaking Babbage, we wouldn't have computers or video games.

[QUOTE="Bazooka_4ME"]And if it wasn't for Sony and it's Playstation brand, MS wouldn't have a complete gaming division that popularized the market that made the 360 today.AdobeArtist

Turn back the clock; if it wasn't for Nintendo and it's gaming brand power during the 8bit and 16bit era, Sony wouldn't have created its own gaming division when previously the company was focused on media electronics (TVs, walkmans, CD players, etc...). And what got Nintendo into the business in the first place? That would be Atari.

Nintendo did introduced a lot of innovative gameplay. But this is not about Nintendo is it?

And if it wasn't for Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Pacman, Centipede, Pong etc, etc. Seriously, please stop acting like Sony made video games.

Who's discrediting who? This is about proclaiming Sony copying MS is it not? On topic, MS wouldn't have a gaming division if it wasn't for Sony. Let's see you spin this.

Yes this thread is primarily about the interconnected events of MS and Sony. But the historical reference is relevant in how it adds perspectve to your post, in so far as how various entities are always inspired or motivated by others, in a continuous chain in history. Those seen as "first" rarely are.

Yes this thread is primarily about the interconnected events of MS and Sony. But the statement I was responding to needed a little historical perspective to outline how it's pointless to play the "who did what first" game, as it usually can be traced back far beyond the point originally being referenced.

This types of threads have been done up to the umpteenth time as far as me joining GS. You knew this was pointless so why not close it? On top, why not respond to the TC instead?

pretty much. sony loves to copy ideas from competitors, probably because usually it utterly fails when they try to come up with anything "original"...like the embarrassment that is HOME

But ultimately a console's success comes down to its game library, which Sony has done an excellent job with!

Do you have a PS3.? Have you even go into Home.? Is a free virtual place, where you can group with your friends, launch games directly from it,cross invite people, play tons of free games, visit cool game places and play mini games in arcade form, get your own place and have arcades on it,all that free.? MS actually charge you $10 more because of Netflix and facebook, which are also free on PS3. By the way isn't MS making and arcade room Home style where your avatar can walk there.? I take home 1 million times over party chat.

Any PS2 mult-player features at that time were developer implemented. Fact is, Sony hasn't done much of anything really innovative in the console gaming space this gen or last for that matter, it's been all MS imo.o0HAPPY0o
It doesn't even matter the PS2 had voice chat before xbox live was even out,so counting voice chat as something live did and sony copy it is a joke. Sony hasn't done any innovative. So who brought DVD to the market.? What other controller features 8 buttons, rumble build in and 2 analogues before the DS.? The xbox controller exist because of the DS,hell the xbox exist because of the PS brand. Because MS even mimic the way sony use to promote things.? MTV and big show with stars.? Hell the xbox feature an HDD because of sony, before the xbox existed sony was already planning for an HDD on the PS2,and in fact before the xbox even hit,the HDD was release in Japan. Lets see when sony landed the first thing that happen was that games which were $79.99 dropped in price to $49.99,consoles hardware started to go down in price as well, and stopped from stagnating, sony has done for this industry great things, mostly all in favor of the consumer. You can compare it to MS who's bigger achievement is trick 17 million people into believing they are getting value for something that should be free.

You know what sucks about Gold? I wanted to download the FIFA 12 demo on it yesterday and whaddya know It was a timed exclusive download for Gold members. So I went on PSN to check it out and it was on there for free.

I'm not going to sit here and defend Sony when they probably have locked out demos too but at least when I pay I get a bunch of goodies. I hate having to sacrifice a potential game (and god are there dozens) I could buy the ability to play multiplayer.

Actually at first all 360 users got new demos at the same time, but MS change it so that only gold members could access new demos 1 week before any one else, which is a joke that was a feature of silver as well, and MS change it to make xbox live gold look as a better deal.lol And 360 fans were happy to actually use that as an advantage.

Well but that is the majority on xbox 360,since like 17 million people only pay for xbox live gold, which leave close to 40 million people who don't pay for xbox live, and out of those close to 40 millions, like 20 million don't even have a silver account.

yea sony sees good ideas and rips them off and tries to make them better..

they have copied from nintendo all the way back to the snes... they usually succeeded

with xbox live theyre way of making it better was trophies.... overall though i think they fell a bit short on this one..

you do know that the xbox controller is based off the Dreamcast controller. considering that the guy who worked on the dreamcast worked on the xbox, and how 99% of the orignal xbox controller looks like the Dreamcast. and so what, only sony is allowed to add rumble built in to a controller, even though N64 was the first to have rumble.

WAIT so because Sony apparently thought of a HD on the PS2, it means MS copied them, even though they did it first?

Yeah because the DC had rumble build in,8 buttons, and 2 analogues. I still own a DC those are features of the DS,the rumble feature on DC was like the N64 separate,it wasn't build in,the xbox controller has all the features the DS has,the 360 one mimic the DS right down to the 4 shoulder buttons,or most i tell you that they place them on top because the black and white buttons were horrible. Also do you have a link to where it say that the guy who design the xbox controller also worked on the DC one.? Because the DC controller is a patent hold by Sega, and not any one else, the fact that MS has copy their design in nothings means they actually had that person working with them,in fact when the xbox was show Sega was still in the race. DVD which they still use to this day.

I LOVED the Dreamcast controller, so I am glad that took place. As far as copying, one could argue that Sony copied , or took a page out of Microsoft's book with the middle button being used to access the dashboard, turn off the system, etc., which was released on the 360 first. Now no one knows if Microsoft peaked their head in Sony's manufacturing offices to steal their design before release, but the 360 was released first, and it's controller uses those functions. Very minor though, but one shouldn't spout nonsense, when one clearly copies the other all the time. So I agree with you gameradam.

I like the competition, I think if Xbox 360 hadn't made certain features available we probably would be seeing those same features from competitors, like built in wireless controller functionality, friends lists, achievements, cross game party chat, hard-drives for things like system and game updates, downloadable games, demos, arcade games, movie rentals, Netflix, gameplay videos, streamlining online console gaming, if the Xbox 360 weren't around the PS3 probably wouldn't be as powerful, wouldn't use a hard-drive but instead probably an optional external HDD again for certain online games, and saves typically to memory cards, a less robust PS Store that would just offer map packs for the few online games that would utilize an eternal HDD, and not just for Sony but also Nintendo's Wii would also probably have less features. The competition is good though, Sony's use of what MS did only reinforces how those things are good decisions to have in a console, sets a new standard for gaming consoles from now on for all fronts. But the competition is needed from everyone, because without it I don't think the console makers would try as hard to win gamers over with excellent games and hardware and features. Nintendo despite it's hardware limitations introduced motion controls, and though largely I see it as a gimmick there are still games that utilize these controls quite well. Sony to a less successful extent is following suit and Microsoft's Kinect doesn't reinvent all gaming but as a peripheral motion control device does a decent job, so motion controls are a work in progress and show promise. Sony's biggest contribution for this gen on future gaming though will be disc memory storage of the Blu-ray, Nintendo will basically mimic the BR discs with their own proprietary brand so they don't have to pay for the rights to use the BR format, but this is influenced by the introduction of Blu-ray. And MS I imagine will want the next Xbox to play BR movies so they'll probably pay Sony for this privilege and also so games take advantage of it.

No so out of MS page the PSP use the XMB and also has a home button just like the PS3 controller, but the PSP was release on the end of 2004,so it actually beat the 360 with a home button by 1 year, since both the PS3 and the PSP use the same XMB is pretty easy to see where sony got the idea.

Umm, no. The PS2 had online as well as consoles before it. Heck, you could conect your phone to the console to play online on the go. Just because these were not as popular then doesn't discount their existence.

If it wasn't for Nintendo, gaming would not be what it is today. Without Atari, there wouldn't be gaming at all.

Microsoft, however, brought online to the consoles.

No they didn't.

PSN is playing desperate catch-up with lackluster success and its only merit is that it's free.

If the PSN is lackluster, that doesn't bode well for Xbox Live. When two services are as similar as these two, yet one costs money when the other doesn't, I wouldn't be calling the free one "lackluster" to try to prove my point.

The problem with both services is being highly reliant on p2p online gaming. Until this changes dramatically, both systems will be subpar for playing online, on at least the games with no servers.

So Sony fanboys want me to believe that a free piece of **** car is better than a Ferrari, because its free?

That's how I see it as well. My piece of junk car that I own gets me from point A to B, and so would a Ferrari, but I know which one I'd rather be driving (not my piece of junk).

Agreed. PSN was terrible during the ps2 era. I remember having to buy that add-on thing to play online and to dL everything was even worse than it is now somehow. If it wasn't for MS creating such a good platform through xbl, sony wouldn't have made so many changes to psn to catch up.

We can go on and on about who influenced whom; all the way down to when electricity was discovered. What really matters is that competition makes things better for the consumer. I'm certain that Sony is itching to charge for their service, it's just that XBL was already so established and well known that Sony needed to do something to gain an edge over Microsoft... which was make PSN free.

I think so too.

I expect PS+ to be mandatory, or at least more mandatory (have more features stripped from PSN to make PS+ look far better), next gen. It's rather expensive to run a network completely out of pocket.

Not really. I'd rather have that money to buy something else. But that's how it goes I suppose.

Yeah, we all want money but life isn't like that. Grow up. As it turns out, some services you have to pay for. If you don't want to pay, fine. Go somewhere else. Seriously, I can't understand why these kids feel the need to fuss and moan when they never had any intention of supporting Live or Microsoft to begin with. As if they were going to buy it otherwise. People don't like it? Fine, shut up and go elsewhere. These people rant about all these other apparent services, one has to wonder why they aren't there enjoying themselves instead of on forums crying. It's agitating to sit here and listen to the same hate speeches about how much we're being 'ripped off'. I don't feel ripped off. I'm having fun. You're not? Okay, see you later.

beautiful post.

i, too, never understand the reason cows spend so much time worrying about why the rest of the world pay for a superior service. but it sure is amusing to watch.

That is true. Gaming industry thrives off of healthy competition. Rarely do I ever feel like any company does anything innovative.

but... PSN doesn't charge access to my router so... yeah =D

[QUOTE="todd2r"][QUOTE="Bazooka_4ME"]And if it wasn't for Sony and it's Playstation brand, MS wouldn't have a complete gaming division that popularized the market that made the 360 today.Bazooka_4ME
And if it wasn't for Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Pacman, Centipede, Pong etc, etc. Seriously, please stop acting like Sony made video games.

Who's discrediting who? This is about proclaiming Sony copying MS is it not? On topic, MS wouldn't have a gaming division if it wasn't for Sony. Let's see you spin this.

MS gaming division existed before SONY even thought about making the Ps1, MS flight simulator ring a bell?

Alot of people have been saying how PSN is better because it's free and such, fairenough. Do those people even know where PSN got all their features from? Thats right, XBL. XBL was invented much more before PSN was made. PSN took many things like trophies, in game XMB support, in game messaging, voice chat, join session in progress, recent players all from XBL. People have been saying how XBL is same as PSN, but do people know 70% of the features in PSN are plainly ripped-off from XBL? If one of the two services were to add something different and innovative, it will be xbox live. Also if XBL didnt exist, I wonder where PSN would of ripped their ideas from? People need to realise that XBL is far original, and that PSN is company that clones features from XBL. This is plain fact. Sorry cows but true.

But that the good thing. Competition makes stuff better

[QUOTE="AncientDozer"][QUOTE="Thuganomic05"] Not really. I'd rather have that money to buy something else. But that's how it goes I suppose.KarateeeChop

MIcrofost fly simulator wasn't even a game that came out of MS,it was bough just like Halo the game was license to use to MS on 1982 but on 83 the game was also on Apple II. Sony also had a game division that worked on the late 80's,but non of the 2 were into the console market as console sellers,so the count started when they enter the video game race as a whole, not when they license 1 game to make profits. If it wasn't for the success of the PS MS would not be here right now.

Agreed. PSN was terrible during the ps2 era. I remember having to buy that add-on thing to play online and to dL everything was even worse than it is now somehow. If it wasn't for MS creating such a good platform through xbl, sony wouldn't have made so many changes to psn to catch up.

tutt3r
PSN did not existed on PS2 is just did not had a name, and to download what.? The PS2 got few DLC if any,i think it was a socom 3 map and that was about it. Online would go forward no matter what, already sony was doing voice chat before xbox live even launch, sure MS spice it they are a software company is what they do,some people claim arcade games, others HDD,custom sound track, many of those things were in their infancy on PS1 or been on plan on sony's head quarters before the xbox even launched. Hell Ridge Racer supported music from CD's,you just took the disc out and place your music CD inside and played the game with your own music, does that sound familiar.?

[QUOTE="sts106mat"] correction, you mean Xbox wouldn't be here now, MS as a company were around before the PS.

Exactly MS was established on 1975,sony in 1946 and Nintendo like in the 1887s lol..

Well i don't see you enjoying it you are just here complaining about those you say are crying,so you are not any better than us,specially when you put down PSN to defend xbox live.
