[QUOTE="killtactics"][QUOTE="Viviath"]Ok, instead of us bickering like little girls, why dont you just educate me. What is the gravemind? or whatever that weird octopus like thing in the water was? Why are the Covenants attacking humans? Why is there a religious rebellion occuring within the Convenant side? Why were Halos created? I mean what purpose does a life extinguishing product like that serve...other than for the obligatory mad genious who kills because he has nothing better to do? What is master chief? Why doesnt he take off his mask even at awards ceremonies? Why is there only on Masterchief when you land on the Halo. I mean if he is so amazing at combat you think they would send 10 of them at the Halo. Who made the Flood? because they inhabit artificailly created worlds, they must be artificaially created or have been moved to the Halo. What is master chief? Why did humans go to the first halo in the first place? Why does the gravemind act as an intermediary force between MC and the Arbiter. whats the Arbiter's real name? whats master chiefs real name? How does Halo have its own atmosphere when they structure of the "planet" makes it impossible for it have enough central mass to contain gases on its surface? and last but not least, seeing as the gravity of the Halos is different from earth (you can see by the way you jump and float down slowly) why isnt everything else more grand and large? does Halo have any natural inhabitants other than the flood?

thats too many Questions.... just play the game...

Thats my point...the games dont answer the above questions...

I hardly think Halo has as much "underlying themes" as the Iliad. If any.

Given your argument, you could apply that to any peice of literature. The application of "text" and "subtext". I could be reading aesop's fables or any of the tales from the grimm brothers and surmise a plethora of allusions that support a more profound reading of the text.

Just as I could note the "hero" and "anti-hero" themes of Tekken, or explore the Marxist undertones of Starcraft.

Ninja-Vox

If you think Halo is devoid of underlying themes, you haven't played halo. :| Heck, is it possible to not pick up on the whole biblical thing while playing that game?

And heck, i cant remember the last time i played an FPS that any decent excuse of story since half life. So quit complaining and nit picking for the sake of it and appreciate that fact that for a shooter, halo's story and storytelling is definately worthy of praise.

When did I say that Halo is devoid of underlying themes? But a direct comparison to something like - the Iliad - in terms of its inherent subtext, is hardly worth arguing over.

And if you bothered to read any of my earlier replies, I myself admitted that Halo has a very engaging story. One of the best ones in FPS history if I may so boldly put forward. But despite having a strong story, the game, I feel, suffers from weak storytelling, which, I feel is only highlighted by the fact that the story is just that good.

I'm not nitpicking for the sake of it. In case you didn't notice, other posters were talking about the story as well.

[QUOTE="Viviath"]This is my opinion...so please dont flame. When or if MC dies in Halo3 he will not get immortalized. Why you ask? because we dont know MC. Superman was immortalized because we knew him. We knew what he stood for, where he came from, what he wanted to do. We knew the man behind the cape. As for MC we dont know anything about him. He doesnt even half a glimmer of persona in his character. So when he dies, he will not be remembered, but Halo will be remembered. The game has far more personality than its protagonist. Now, when David (Solid Snake) dies in MGS4 guns of the patriots...that will place him in legendary status. He was a human being with emotions. Always pondering the value of warm the value of his life, and the decisions he makes. He is a damaged hero, which is sumthing alot of people can relate to. When he finally dies in the epic finally, people will remember the man (character?) over the game.Viviath

Wow... you should really read the Halo-books :|

And those how have read the books have followed John since he was 6 years old. That will be legendary.

This "read the Halo books" junk needs to stop. I bought Halo for Xbox (360) ok! The game alone should tell the full story, or atleast a coherent story instead of half assing it and then telling the reader "hey, our story isnt crappy, you just gotta buy our books to understand it!" I can say with almost absolute certainty that the majority of people who play Halo have not read the books. Hence alot of people dont get the full story. This "read the book" junk is just an excuse for sloppy story telling.

There's absolutely no way Bungie could tell all the stories in the books in game. The amount of backstory and small details in the halo universe is amazing.

The games arent based on the MC's past...they never were...they are based on what is happening at that time...not what john did to become the master chief, not the time in the mountains...the games tell the story great...the books fill in the gaps about johns past..its that simple, and if you cant be bothered to read the books go to wikipedia and read about john

Well, there's a much bigger chance Bungie will pull a Neon Genesis Evangelion than a Matrix considering their track record with marathon.

I expect that if he dies it occurs in some big explosion type thing. There's no way their gonna show him losing to some covenant/flood monster.

Viviath

EPIC SPOILER WARNING. SPOILER TAGS WONT WORK. BLAME GAMESPOT.

The gravemind is the physical manifestation of the parasitic virus known as the flood. It has existed for billions of years and is the source of the flood infection.

The "covenants" as you put it, are attacking humans because as they say at first contact "your destruction is the will of the gods." You have to understand that it isn't so much a war as an extermination. Humans fight back as best they can but ultimately every colony to be discovered by the covenant has been annihilated. The covenant are wiping out humans because of their religion; they worship an ancient civilisation which once inhabited the galaxy. All covenant technology is simply immitations of the old tech they unearth left behind by their "gods" the forerunners. Whereas humans see them as just an ancient, extinct race, the covenant worship them as devine beings. That's the one thing holding all the alien races together, their religion. They wage war on the humans because they have discovered forerunner artifacts on human colonies and believe humans are defiling them. With each colony, they send a huge ground force, determine if there are any artifacts on the planet, then pull out and glass the planet from orbit; bombarding it literally 'til it's surface is glass. That is why they attack the humans.

Next question; There is a schism within the covenant because the elites are being replaced by the brutes as the protectors of the prophets. During this process, many brutes attacked elites and in turn, many elites have come to realise that the brutes are slowly trying to wipe them out. The elites rise against this, just as the arbiter - a warrior who's soul task is to do whatever the prophets ask of him, regardless of his own wellbeing - learns that the Halo rings are not religious artifacts as the prophets have told them. There is no "Great Journey" which the rings will instil; he learns that just like master chief learned in halo 1, they are simply weapons designed to annihilate all sentient life. He, along with the other elites, realise that their whole religion is a lie.

Next question; The halo rings were created by the forerunners to contain the parasitic virus, the flood. If the virus escapes, it spreads with alarming speed and does not stop until all life is consumed. After exhausting every other option, the rings can be activated, annihilating all life from the galaxy and removing potential hosts for the flood. There is one place which is unaffected by the rings; called the ark. It is believed that this is on earth, but this will be confirmed in halo 3. We dont know yet.

Master Chief is a rank in the navy. His actual name is John, or Spartan 117. Inspired by the greek spartans from ancient greece, the UNSC being a secret project to take children of a very young age who fit a certain criteria. They are trained all of their lives to the point of being insanely awesome soldiers. At a certain age, they undergo genetic enhancement which kills the majority of them. Those who survive, have stronger bones, stronger reflexes yadda yadda; they're basically what you would call super-human. At this stage they are given a suit of MJOLNIR armour; the armoured suit with the energy shields. They are spartans.

He DOES take his mask off; he does it twice in the games; bungie just dont let you see his face. "You'd think they'd send 10 master chiefs..."

Again; master chief is a rank. If you mean send 10 spartans, the game makes it very clear multiple times that after the covenant invasion of reach - the second biggest human planet after earth - all of the spartans are killed with the exception of master chief. Some think there may be more in Halo 3, as the books kinda hint at their being survivors... but that has nothing to do with the game.

Nobody made the flood. It is a virus. The rings were made to contain it, stop it getting out at all costs. They are like giant prisons, only they keep a virus inside, not criminals. Humans went to the first halo because the ship "The pillar of autumn" which master chief was on board made a random slip-space jump after the humans lost the battle for planet reach. They emerged right in front of the giant ring, and were followed by the covenant who attacked the ship. Fleeing the battle, the ship's captain crash landed the ship on Halo, which is the premise for the first game.

Arbiter's real name i cant remember. All of the elites have weird names like S'ho Y'aska and what-not. I think it tells you in the manual but as far as the game goes, he's the arbiter. Simple as that. MC's name is John.

You do not jump higher because of the gravity, you jump higher because you are genetically altered. Cortana explains how amazing the artificial atmospher technology the forerunners created was in the first game when you're on halo, with the level called "assault on the control room" whereby you connect cortana to ring's key control centre and she learns everything of how it was created.

Anything else?

Yeah an ala-Gladiator death would be epic. Slow motion. Rising orchestral score. Knelt on the ground his war-torn helmet by his side. A plasma burn through his chest armor. And one last one-liner.

Honestly man, either you have major, major attention problems or you haven't played halo. I mean questions like "why dont they just send ten master chiefs!!!" or "why did the go to halo in the first place"? What? The game makes it so abundantly clear that he's the last one left so many times; and the opening scene of the first game explains exactly how they ended up at Halo, and heck, so does the opening scene of the second in case you missed the first one.

Just as I could note the "hero" and "anti-hero" themes of Tekken, or explore the Marxist undertones of Starcraft.

x_boyfriend

Honestly man, either you have major, major attention problems or you haven't played halo. I mean questions like "why dont they just send ten master chiefs!!!" or "why did the go to halo in the first place"? What? The game makes it so abundantly clear that he's the last one left so many times; and the opening scene of the first game explains exactly how they ended up at Halo, and heck, so does the opening scene of the second in case you missed the first one.Ninja-Vox

dude calm down seriously...Halo is not your mother ok...no need to get pissed off ok. Last i played Halo 2 was last year, so i prolly dont remember the story that well...i mean its kinda hard to hear Cortana important plot messages amid the the tumulous gunfire. reminds me of farcry....

If anyone in the Halo-series should me immortalized, it's the Arbiter. Such character...bobby_king

Arbiter is much cooler than Master Chief. Spare me the faceless hulk who barely says a word. Master Chief has to be the most boring and uninteresting protaganist in a shooter since Gordon Freeman. We need more Duke Nukem-types, who are there to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And they're all out of gum.

I completley agree. The arbiter has more personality. He goes through torture, you see his conflict state of mind as he decides whether to go against his religous elders. He is a character worth of immortalization.

I didn't get remotely angry. :| Honestly that "dude... like, calm down lol!" is the weakest arguement of all time and it comes up far too often. You asked a bunch of halo-related questions. I answered them all. Simple as that.

And do you think perhaps, that if you played the game two years ago and admit yourself that you dont remember what's going on at all; perhaps it's not best to say that bungie fail at telling the story? :?

And further proof that you dont know what you're talking about, the story plays out in cutscenes, not through cortana in-game.

Ninja-Vox

That is a great pre-halo 3 refresher course for us non-hardcore fans. THANKS!

Personally I consider the Marathon plot one of the greatest in a video game ever, but Infinity really could have used some better story TELLING. Using concepts like parallel universes, time warping and alternative realities while at the same time trying to tell a story about an AI that tries to become a God by escaping our own dimension in a game with doom like technology was a bit too much even for Bungie. While the story itself is a masterpiece, it takes some serious dedication to really get a grip on it.

Marathon 1&2 were much more "normal" games storywise than Infinity which is why it's plausible that halo 3 will take the same route.

Viviath

SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!

SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!

What is the gravemind?

Nobody knows at this point because the Halo trilogy has yet to be completed. Ostensibly, he seems to be the creator and controller of the flood, and during halo 2 he (it?) dispatched Master Cheif and the Arbiter to stop Tartarus and the Prophets from activating delta halo because he knew that the interests of the flood coincided with theirs at the time. If the ring would have been activated, the flood , the human race, and the elites would have been destroyed.

Why are the Covenants attacking humans?

Because they are religious fanatics and believe the human race to be an affront to their gods.

Why is there a religious rebellion occuring within the Convenant side?

Because the Elites discovered the Prophet's "great journey" to be a fraud. This is the central theme of the first Arbiter mission, in which you are tasked with the assignment of quelling the fledgling heretic separatists. The great journey, considered by the prophets to be something akin to the achievement of nirvana, involves the activation of the network of Halos, an action which would result in the destruction of all sentient life in the galaxy.

Why were Halos created? I mean what purpose does a life extinguishing product like that serve...other than for the obligatory mad genious who kills because he has nothing better to do?

The forerunners, whose identities are still concealed, built the Halos to combat the Flood. They were activated when it was determined that there was no other recourse left to prevent the Flood from taking over the galaxy. The monitor mentions this in Halo at the beginning of two betrayals, I believe.

What is master chief?

A subject of the spartan project, which started his transformation into a supersoldier when he was still a child.

Why doesnt he take off his mask even at awards ceremonies?

For dramatic effect.

Why is there only on Masterchief when you land on the Halo. I mean if he is so amazing at combat you think they would send 10 of them at the Halo.

Most of the other spartans were killed. Bungie has left it ambiguous as to whether there are any besides the master chief left or not.

Who made the Flood?

I believe that this is an as of yet unresolved question.

Why did humans go to the first halo in the first place?

They ended up there after making a random jump into slip space. The beginning of Halo takes place shortly after the siege of reach, of which the Pillar of Autumn (the ship Master Chief arrives on) is the only surviving human vessel. Their ending up at Halo was basically an accident.

Why does the gravemind act as an intermediary force between MC and the Arbiter.

see first answer.

whats the Arbiter's real name?

I'm not certain, but I don't think that this has been disclosed. What I do know is that he was the former supreme commander of the covenant fleet tasked with defending the first Halo. His failure to prevent it from being destroyed led to the revocation of his command and his ostracization by the covenent.

whats master chiefs real name?

John, although this wasn't mentioned in any of the games and isn't really pertinent to their contained plots anyway.

How does Halo have its own atmosphere when they structure of the "planet" makes it impossible for it have enough central mass to contain gases on its surface?

The Halos were built by the forerunners with self-sustaining in artificial atmospheric systems. It was during either "Assault on the Control Room" or "Two Betrayals" that cortana mentioned that the ring's atmospheric systems were acting weird.

and last but not least, seeing as the gravity of the Halos is different from earth (you can see by the way you jump and float down slowly) why isnt everything else more grand and large? does Halo have any natural inhabitants other than the flood?

During the second mission of Halo, shortly after crash-landing onto the ring in the escape-pod thing, Cortana remarks about the tremendous amount of flora and fauna that she was detecting. Presumably there are many different types of organisms on the rings, but Bungie didn't see fit to include them for some reason.

Star Ocean till the end of time had a killer story but its an rpg so it should easily have story. I gota check out that Marathon. Interesting Doom in the books had a tripy storyline like that , then doom the movie had a different storyline but was also kinda cool.

I plan on finishing halo 2 campaign a little b4 when halo 3 comes out. Get fresh and play some halo 3 co op.

Incorrect. The games tell the story quite well, but in an unconventional way. If you're not ready to listen to all the little bits and pieces, you'll miss out on the whole thing. Reading the books gives you more of what you've already been given. Bungie is masterful at telling a story.

This has been bothering me. Do you have proof the books are even canon?

So what you are trying to say is that during the whole gameplay, cortanaa never makes any comments that pertain to the story, because if thats what you are claiming then you sir ae either braindead or a shameless liar.

Viviath

No major plotlines are ever given in-game. Cortana often speaks about objectives, new discoveries, where you need to go to UNCOVER a plot line. But she never explains anything central or even important to the story while you're fighting. So you using that as an excuse is BS.

Simple as that. :|

Marathon Durandal was just released on XBLA, it's the second game in the series so you'll need some background story:

http://marathon.bungie.org/Story/ben_reiter_synopsis.html

That's a REALLY condensed synopsis, if you want a more in depth version go to the Marathon story page, but be warned, you'll probably need something like 4 weeks to even begin scratching the surface of that place, it's ridiculously packed with both meaningful and totally meaningless information.

Oh, and to avoid spoilers, stop reading by the time you reach the "These events occur in Bungie's game Marathon." line.

This "read the book" junk is just an excuse for sloppy story telling.

If you require a link I can get it for you but do you take my word? This was actually discussed among Bungie fans a few years ago and Bungie came out and officially announced the books to be canon to stop the arguing.

Yes I saw the Bungie statement prior to my comment. It could have been a cop out. I find it INCERDIBLY hard to believe all the books that form a disjointed story from tons of different authors could at all be canon.

Did you play ff7 and watch aeris die?

only differance is with Aeris , there was much more of a plot, MC it's more like here he is the baddass MC, Ok no kill **** then it's another Movie, showing MC kill something, and now your him again, MC has died millions of times, thank god for Restart. But the story is not that important in Halo, it's your basic Aliens taking over Plot, with a strong protaganist, been done before and been done after(Gears of War?)

I'll have to disagree with you there. Master Chief has a gruff voice and is 7 feet tall....that's about as close as he gets to being a clichéd bad-ass action hero. The mear fact that we don't know how he looks doesn't stop him from being a good character. Darth Vader is a great character, and we didn't see how he looked until the last moments in the trilogy. Seeing his face didn't make me feel more engaged with him. Hell, he was actually a better character when you didn't see his face.
