he's a lonely, emotionally stunted grown man with severe anthrophobia and mommy issues. he projects all of his anxieties on an A.I companion who acts as his best friend/girlfriend/mother. cortana, a computer program, fulfills all of these needs. he has no real goals in life besides following orders and protecting his artificial lover/mother figure

he's up there with james sunderland as far as messed up protagonists go. the chief is seriously mentally ill

A proper character is a severely flawed person. It makes us more easily able to identify with them. A "perfect" individual is usually very bland and uninspiring. And the SPARTAN-II and SPARTAN-III program participants were all extremely flawed people. The prior were genetically "perfect" but had no proper development. The latter were orphans, of an extremely vengeful nature, many with severe mental disorders (a lot of sociopaths), trained to be suicide squads. The beauty about the Halo lore is that it represents humanity at it's absolute worst, trying to overcome it's impending extinction.Zeviander

Haven't played halo 4 yet, but it's hard to really pick up any of that just from the 3 original games. Fall of Reach does a pretty good job expanding his backstory and getting in his head.

I can't agree with the anthrophobia thing however. There's nothing in the cannon that implies he is suffering from some kind of social anxiety. In fact he seems pretty comfortable with Arbiter and Johnson hanging around in the 3rd game. Reserved maybe, but I'd hardly consider that an argument for a phobia.
