Halo: CE deserves it more. After all, it made consoles a viable market for the FPS, and it popularized rechargable health. HL2 was just a throw back to HL1 in every way except for graphics and the physics. And there was no mention of Resident evil 4? It refreshed the aging series, and practically reinvented the third-person shooter genre.
It seems to me like they just took their Gotys for every year and rearranged them from best to worst. Which means that if there was a great game in a year that didn't get goty yet was better than a previous years' goty, it doesn't show up on the list. Which would explain games like metroid, re5 and halo ce not making the list

Personally I find it a bit dumb to not include mass appeal and impact when giving out GOTD awards. IMO I wouldn't even rank some of my favorite games of the decade simply because not many people played them, or they didn't shape the industry in any way. I'd say WoW or GTA 3 probably deserve it the most, with Halo: CE, HL2, and the Sims up there. I would add Wii sports, but I just can't stand calling it a game.

pacing- nothing special level design- boring Characters- good but gordon freeman doesnt talk so EPIC PHAIL Gravity Gun - again its nothing special - lancer from gears of war is way cooler

It's one of those games that simply changed gaming. Half-Life 2 is the first game where you can truly interact with the environment. You could pick up a cinder block, drop it from a roof, and it could kill someone. Environmental interaction was very limited before this game. The physics are amazing and are still some of the best to this day. The graphics absolutely dominate. You know God of War? Yea, that ugly game came out a freaking year AFTER Half-Life 2. The gun play, multiplayer, the scale mmm....gaming perfection. It's something you can't explain to some dude who came along in 2007 and played it on the 360. It's over your head.

The level design and pacing in HL2 is some of the best in gaming. Gordon is a silent protagonist, as in YOU. I was referring to EVERYOTHER character in the game, which you seemed to leave out.
The Gravity gun and physics of HL2 is easily one of the most revolutionary gameplay mechanics in gaming history. Almost every object in the game has a set "Mass" to it and can be used as a weapon. It's easily better than an auto kill mechanic like the Lancer.
However I can clearly see this convo is going no where and will not continue it any further with you. I'm betting your retorts will simply consists of "Boring", "nothing special", or "not that cool" like you did this time.

im not really a fan of interacting with environment and dont see anything special about it. i admit the graphics are great even today but thats just about it. there were many better FPS before and after the release of HL2. anyways i just realised its almost 4am...must sleep naooooooo. goodnight
I am perfectly fine with saying HL2 is the game of the decade, I'm not sure if I would put it at the top, I'd have to think long and hard, but I probably would end up with it at #1. :P
Also if anyone wants to argue the decade thing, I'm sure if anyone thinks HL2 is game of the decade, no title this year would change their mind..

ok, you got me.thats kind of an exception. it was a litte fun to gravity gun razorblade zombies. but after chasing the priest around the town and being stuck with no ammo, i started getting tired of just chucking objects at zombies. then those poison bastards came and my suit wouldn't shut the hell up everytime i got attacked.

I'll take; 2000-2009 is a decade though...I know what you're trying to say but a decade is a period of 10 years, any period of 10 years, so if IGN wants to do a retrospective of 2000-2009 and they call it a decade they aren't wrong.
I thought HL2 was a good game, but by no means the best. Heck, it probably wouldn't even be GotY in any of those years. I would have liked to see RE4 there and Zelda: MM (I know Zelda came out 2000, but this list is of games from the decade 2009 and before.

I won't get into another anti-halflife2 tirade, suffice to say I found the game and the level mediocre at best. I think the best way to articulate my feelings about it is to say that everything felt like a game, it never felt like a real world to me.
